you just have to visit this site, it's pretty self explanatory. you give it the names of some bands or songs you like and it'll try to play similar songs and artists - you can have lots of different stations which play different styles of music (up to 100!). you tell it if you like the songs and it'll learn the music you like.
it's basically a really awesome, totally personalised radio station which plays at 128k. the reason they can do it is because technically it's like any other shoutcast station and they don't need to pay the same license fees because they don't actually allow you to listen to specifically requested songs.
just give it a go - i'm totally addicted and i've found about 20 new bands so far that i really dig http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Too much like hard work to me, and I hate sites that find music based on bands you like. I like having new music pumped at me with no filters so you can stumble across something diferent I might like.

did you even go to the site?? jesus, i don't think it could be any simpler. how is typing one band or song name and pressing enter "too much like hard work"? are you on crack?
really, if you're not going to say anything smart don't bother.

I've been using this for a while, and it's pretty accurate. Often there's a song it picks out which I really like, and then I go to check out the artist, and find that the song pandora picked is the only one by that artist that I actually like anyway!
There's also quite a bit of variation in the tracks they play, so there are lots of opportunities to move the station in a new direction.

I like hundreds of bands and dozens of different types of music what's your problems. The problem I have is deciding which bands to add, I'd much rather trawl through mysapce looking for new music than use that site. That all...
VERY cool! Thanks for that, I can see myself listening to this alot.

it's not like if you add a band that's the only type of music they're going to give you. for example i typed in beastie boys and it came up with all this east coast rap i had never heard of before, and i made another station with tool and a perfect circle and it came up with completely different sounding metal/hard rock, even going as far as avenged sevenfold which are nothing like tool. i assure you if you try it for 5 minutes and just type in even just one band that you like it'll play lots of music you like.

http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Yeah, it's so awesome I posted (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=988528&an=0&page=0#988528)about it last week and only 1 person replied http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
What amazes me is how they can just play everything that comes up. With all this RIAA file sharing rubbish going on, theres another company just streaming all it for free?
ed: I've got it set up for Kula Shaker, Gotan Project and Boards of Canada. Very good stuff comigup http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

IT SUCKS!
It couldn't find ANY other band relating to my favorite Death-metal-screamo Polka band "The Forsaken Lederhosen". http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Ah, I first heard about this from Slashdot, but it got hit so hard it went down, and I forgot about it. Hah...anyway, this is turning out pretty cool. I found one band I may like in on the second song, although I have to look into more of their stuff of course.

i wondered that too, but it seems they can do it because it's like any other radio station in that you can't actually choose the individual songs they play. you can't listen to the last song and you can't play specific songs, so they only have to pay the same license fees as any other internet radio station would pay.

There are no songs or just mention of band Anathema in their database, and it should be. Next...

I gave it a try adding a range of music I like and...
WTF
unfortunately the licence they use means you can only skip a set number of songs per hour!!!
There was only one song which I wanted to listen to!!!
Gave it a try, not for me though...

this coming from the same person who said they "like dozens of types of music"? if you couldn't find anything you liked you must have a really limited taste in music.

I can't create an account there, the sign up will only accept 5 digit US zip codes (Canada has 6 digit postal codes). So I have to use a ******** account in order to use it.
Cool site though, it's a pretty good way to sample music from bands/ artists and other stuff that sounds like it. I've already typed in a few different names, and it came up with some decent stuff.

Yeah, the whole 'only in America' thing is pretty sucky, but maybe they'll open it up and make it more international soon.

Just use a fake zip code?

what? all it asks for is a zip code. i live in scotland so i just put 12345. you should at least try a random number before saying it's for americans only http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This is exactly the type of site I was looking for, thanks! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I haven't found anything yet, but thats only because of the restriction per hour http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Kind of limits the use of the website, but other than that its very interesting.
EDIT: Hey, keep hitting refresh......ha! I keep getting new songs and its not telling me to wait an hour.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Or you could switch to another radio station and then switch back.

You probably flick between radio stations. The limit applies on a per-station basis.

I'm finding dozens of songs I like, in fact checking my list I have close to 50 new songs! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So this site has already proved its use to me. I'm hooked.
