How many weapons do you want to be in DNF?

George said they were working on 13 or 14 weapon designs, back in 2000. They've obviously dropped some along the way, like the chainsaw, but right now they're looking at other experimental weapons to add in (having completed the core arsenal) so I guess there will be 12 or 13 weapons in the final game.

Here's an idea:

What if there was a system where you could pick up items from your environment and use them as weapons?
I don't mean necessarily like Postal 2, but more like a physics based system.
You can pick up an object and bash your enemy with it, whether it be an iron bar, a lamp, or a chicken wing

yeah aside from the melee thing I was talking about, I'm happy enough with just 10 - 12 weapons. Altho I'd like to see them as weapon classes, a bit like in vice city.
I.e. You can pick up a machine pistol, but later on you might find a slightly different type of machine pistol, which will replace the first one

I voted 13, because i think that being a realistic number..!
We can safely assume these weapons will appear:
- Pistol (duh)
- Shotgun
- Some kind of machinegun
- Pipebombs
- RPG
- Shrinker
- Freeze ray
- Mighty boot
I'm not sure about the laser tripbombs, and Devastator though... But i expect more crazy/cool weapons from 3DR...

In Half-Life 2 you can turn off the menu system.

That has indeed been the case to date. I think he should expand from there. Kicking things is useful. I'm hoping punches will help in persuading enemy characters into acting like NPCs, giving out helpful information with some "forceful interrogation".

They used that for Shadow Warrior too. Repeatedly toggle-pressing the weapon bind worked like an alt-fire cycling through different firing modes or bringing up the akimbo weapon. But we have a dedicated alt-fire bound seperately to the mouse for ages now.

"that's even slower" It doesn't have to slow, not if they only have one alternative weapon for each weapon which even has got any alternative, besides the expander was the ony weapon that functioned this way in entire game.
Kalki, I am not talking about having this instead of alternate fire but to complement it.

You don't have to do that in Half-Life 2, either (with the menu system disabled). Just double tap the weapon key.

but then again, that has a big disadvantage, because that will only work if the primary weapon is not out of ammo.
if it's out of ammo it will send you to the tertiary (sp? I mean the third) weapon. while when you have a menu you can immediately see that because the primary weapon is red.

the ultimate solution is (when you have more than 10 weapons, which I have no problem with)
have the half-life menu system, but with EVERY WEAPON you can get in the game already in the menu (but those you don't have yet blacked out).
when you call the dropdown menu, it will also put the selection on a gun without ammo or that you don't have yet, so if you want the shotgun in HL, you can always press 22, and it doesn't matter if you have the machinegun already or if it's out of ammo.
because now if you have the shotgun you press [2][LM] (lm = left mouse button)
but as soon as you have to machinegun, you have to call the machinegun that way: [2][2][LM]
and when your machinegun is out of ammo, you call the shotgun like this again: [2][LM]
that's where I have trouble with, and the inconsistency of that is because I said "too slow for in the heat of the combat", it's not the menu itself I have trouble with (i find the HL menu very handy)
with my changes I mentioned, you can always call the shotgun with [2][2][LM], whether you have the machinegun or not, and whether the machinegun is out of ammo or not.
another change: [RM] = go out of the menu, cancel, keep current weapon in your hands.
I find that lacking in half-life as well, because when you call the menu and decide to use the same gun anyway (because you accidently called the menu, or because you see the weapon you wanted to switch to is red, out of ammo) the you have to re-select it. while with the addition of [RM] you can cgo out of the menu quickly http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

HL's menu system is still slower. You really notice the difference in HL2DM.

I used the boot with clicking the middle mouse... And when double clicking, i open doors/use... That way it looked like i kicked the doors open...

Now I know this sounds stupid but why not just have a customizable weapon selection system so everybody is happy? You know like having you define the weapon keys so it fits your own hand? Also half it would be nice to have a way to wield two completely different weapons reguardless of the weight cause he's freaking DUKE NUKEM! Also maybe have the mighty boot upgrades like a spikey boot to run up walls for a little bit or a switch blade boot?

Quality over quantity. If there are only three weapons in the game, and if they are really, really, fun to use I wouldn't mind. It would be better than having twenty shit guns which you keep cycling through every ten seconds because you can't find one you like.
That's another thing to. I think the game should be designed where you use the same one or two guns for a while, and then just when the player will get sick of them, you replace them with a couple of new weapons to last them for a while again. I think Half-Life had a knack for doing this. One of the things I can't stand is when I've got all these weapons and I'm never satisfied with the one I'm using because I'm not sure if it's the most effective with the enemies I'm fighting. Of course, there should be some room for tactics but, essentially, weapon selection and use should be linear. If there's only one mantra we have with shooters, it is that we should try to keep player's thinking to a minimum. Heavy thinking in an action oriented game, I believe, breaks the immersion.

The rest are all subjective, but I'm very sure that 3D Realms will not disappoint when it comes to original weapons. Have they ever? Nope.

I can see Smith a wesson inscribed across the BBL. It must be the .500 Smith & Wesson magnum cartridge. It's just the model 500 all fancied up.

What the facination with the mini vulcan? It's an emplacement. No one could actually shoot that without it being mounted to stable weapons platform, vehicle or aircraft.
Why not just use something more reasonable and just as effective. Such an LMG. Like an M60 or a SAW or similar?

What the facination with the mini vulcan? It's an emplacement. No one could actually shoot that without it being mounted to stable weapons platform, vehicle or aircraft.
Well, whats the fascination with a guy who fights horny aliens / mutated pigs in cop uniforms / giant floating brains single handedly, using over the top one liners and a variety of impossible weapons including a shrink ray??
I think a six barrelled machine gun isn't really overstepping the mark of reality here.

Mo9st people would surely agree by rather having a weak weapon with great sounds, than a powerfull weapon with 'bad' sounds (wimpy and weak)...

Actually, i found this great mod for Doom 3... It contains some great sound effects for the game, as well as alternate fire functions for some weapons, and other alterations...
I'd recomend you to try it out if your current Doom 3 experience is fading out...

Cool weapon sounds are a must, there is no reason to not have a cool looking weapons with beautifull kick ass explosions and a powerfull sound.

No. There's already most likely an assault rifle w/ grenade attachment in the game (it was featured predominantly in the first E3 video and appeared several times in the second). It's also not suitable as a replacement for a minigun: miniguns are for getting as much lead in one general area as you can in as short a time as you can possibly fit. Assault rifles are for controlled bursts.

Well that was a movie and that minigun was a prop that didn't fire real ammunition. So it didn't have the power a real mini gun has. Load a gun with light blanks and it won't kick or climb at all. Like shooting a cap gun. Plus 7.62x51 lets off a huge muzzle flash. The flash exiting those barrels was just a poof.
Ever fire a .30 caliber weapon. It kicks & climbs like a 12 gauge. My opinion it's worse. The entire gunners cabin and the rear of the cockpit including the exterior the aircract in a black hawk rattles when one of those mini guns fires live ammunition.
My dad's hue gunship was armed with dual .30 caliber minis and the entire aircraft would rattle when the pilot would fire them. So if they effect the aircraft like that which weighs tons not including the weight of the passangers how do you think it would handle if a person tried to fire it unmounted?
Those things eject brass like a huricane. I don't recall ever seeing nearly enough brass actually coming out of the gun or any at all.
The weapon that arnold and Jesse used was probably all light plastic and fired caps, not bullets. Then editing and special effects did the rest to make it sound and look real.
Anyways, Duke has the ripper. Same barrel cooling principle with originality. That is.. if it makes a return.
