ROTT virtual reality

I'd read it in the documentation for the game somewhere, but it was still so cool to do it!

I'm at SeaWorld, and their little VR booth line is getting shorter, so I figure, what the hell, and I get in line. After about 10 minutes it's my turn and the guy says to me "You want to play the one where you shoot robots, or the one where you shoot people?" I was in a bad mood over vendor prices ($4.50 for a snocone?!) so I took the people one.

So he straps this thing on my head, sticks the two joysticks in my hands, and turns the machine on and . . .

Boy, was I surprised--I drop right into "The HUNT Begins" and I was ecstatic. I knew where all the secrets were and everything, and the guy was watching my progress on the monitor. He asked how I knew where everything was, and how to kill every guy, and he said I was the first person ever to make it out of the first level. I tell him I've played that level like a million times, and he says "What?? Is that for like, Nintendo or something?"

Naturally, I told him--it's made by Apogee, it's a shareware game for the PC. He asked where he could get a copy, and I wrote "www.3drealms.com" on a piece of paper for him, along with "click 'Our Games'."

I don't think I've ever made anyone so happy. He was really pumped when I walked over to the control keyboard to show him some stuff, and I typed in "Dipstick" and "Seeya". The hand of God always is cool when you see it the first time. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Ya know, the exact same thing happened to me except I was at worlds of fun and the game was duke3d! I knew every secret and the guy asked me how I was so good at the game, and I responed "I own it, duh!" I then almost got the gut fired by waiting untill the owner of the park came around, and tipping the strippers!

Woh that's cool! I wanna play ROTT VR! I once played Duke3d VR at my local Sega City (Since taken away http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif) and alstmo got to the end of the first level, but that pig cop right there killed me... http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif It was because the VR controls were kinda hard to master, and also because I think the level was the duke match version and since I hardly ever play Dukematch (don't ask) I was kinda confused. Oh well, still a fun time.

TerminX, at one time you chould buy a joy stick that came with Tomb Raider or something like that. I think even Duke, but the Duke might have been shareware, anyways games can and do come with hardware sometimes. And vise versa.

Yeah, a demo of Tomb Raider, I saw the thing at Best Buy, whats your point? Bundling the demo/shareware with a joystick isn't the same as charging people to play it.

Um, that IS my point. Registered version can and is bundled with other products like that. I just can't think of anything off the top of my head... That StarWars games with the falcon joystick. And it doesn't matter if it's legal, people can and do still do it. It's not like 3DR goes knocking at every door across the world looking for illegal activity.

I was playing ROTT in a virtual reality thing at Canada's Wonderland in Ontario. That was fun, but I hardly ever played the game before that so I got killed several time. The moral of this story? Well, I haven't quite worked that out yet.

Do you mean virtual reality as being with those red & blue glasses? I know that you can do that with Duke3D & LameDuke, but I've never had the glasses to see what it'd be like, where could I get some?

Uh . . . that's "3D Glasses." We're talking about these giant goggles with two tiny TV sets in them that sit on your head . . .

Oh well, I know you can do that thing with the red & blue stuff (or at least in theory) if you edit the duke3d.cfg file. I'd still like to know if anyone has any clue on where people get those things. I'm interested in seeing if it would work.

SHIT! He's right! Edit 'duke3d.cfg', set the screen mode to "7" and set the resolution to 320x200 slap on the anaglyph 3d glasses for some modern 3D, retro style!

You can get a set of two glasses at www.3dcompany.com (http://www.3dcompany.com) and surf through the sight or go there directly at www.3dcompany.com/webintro.html (http://www.3dcompany.com/webintro.html) and go down to the bottom of the page for the address.

One thing though, the glasses they sell are blue on the left, red on the right but it appears that Duke 3D uses the reverse so you will need to bend the earpieces back and wear them inside out.

Also I don't think this feature was ever finished because it doesn't always work right. Some of the weapons are clipped on one side and the the mirrors are all screwed up. Not to mention the headache it causes if you play it like this too long!

I ahev an old VR helmet for the SNES and Genesis... It's prolly in my attic... really crappy POS for $50 I got back in the early 90's... Isn't it nice no one tries to rip you off like that now-a-days?

That's what I did, but the game doesn't look any different! I don't have 3D glasses, but I assume the screen would look somewhat different than before (like those 3D enhanced comics; outlined in blue and red). Am I getting gyped out of crazy 3Dness?

...whoa! I showed someone something new? I always go through and explore every file from a game after I've beaten it and gotten fairly bored with it (That's when I discovered it). You can also do it in LameDuke and BUILD. I've done some pretty cool things by changing uncompiled files for games (although they may require an idea or two on passing protection against changing these types of things).

Oh, to answer your question, Gleamer, the screen is all red and blue, this is what the DUKE3D.CFG file schould look like

ScreenMode = 7
ScreenWidth = 320
ScreenHeight = 200

When playing in red/blue all 2D screens such as the level-end screen and title screen will be screwed up, ignore them. Mirrors do not reflect properly, 'quick look' left and right don't work right, and the red channel of the status bar does not update properly. Actually, RedBlue Stereovision is mode 2 of the 3D stuff, Crystal Eyes is the first one, and that one works in atomic.

On my copy of Atomic the mode 6 does work but the screen is garbled and the red/blue don't mesh together properly with the 3d glasses on.

If you can see vertical lines and bright specks of red and blue on the screen then it won't work, even without the 3d glasses on the screen should be somewhat smooth. Your status bar should look normal but purple and you should be able to walk up to a wall and it look fairly smooth and dark purple. It should not have bright red and blue spots all over it.
