View Full Version : Recent trouble with FPS...

This is a very odd problem happening for me. I feel atleast its odd. This is all in single player, and it hardly plagues me in multiplayer situations. Maybe once in awhile but not all the time. I think my system can handle most games pretty good, but it appears some begin to chug. Heres the problem. Ill be playing a game like Battlefield 2 on medium details, 80% view distance, with about 15 bots. Now i dont think thats to demanding on my system, but it makes it chug and work hard sometimes. I dont understand why. I turned the clocks back down on my video card, tried defrags and scan disks, spyware checks and virus scans.Turning off extra items that may be hogging the memory and nothing to seems to work to well. Turning off some of the stuff that hogs memory seems to help a little, but itll happen a little while later. Now it doesnt just happen with Battlefield 2, its just about any... not new, but most FPS that are in the specs of 1.5-2ghz, 64mb video cards and 256-512mb ram requirements. Its a odd problem to me and any solution other then a reformat would be nice. I might be in for a reformat, but I think its been under six months and that would be my last resort. Bots take up lots of CPU power. CS with PodBot performs worse than CS online.

Battlefield 2 is one hell of a system hog. So that doesn't really surprising honestly.

But if your having similar problems with other games you should defrag, check for spyware... try reinstalling your drivers or even try older drivers (5.10 or 5.11).

Also make sure your sound card drivers are up to date.

Hey, we almost got the same specs. Except my processor is an AMD 64 and my RAM is clocked at 400Mhz.

tell us which FPS your PC has problems with.
for games like battlefield 2 and half-life 2 it's normal, but we can't say if there is a problem with your PC if you don't say which games (and what settings you run them at) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And that's just a simple node-based bot system. It's worse when using POXBot or something else more advanced (albeit all CS bots are pretty light on system).

In BF2 the bots do consume a lot of CPU, isn't 15bots+player the maximum by default? So I wouldn't worry about little chugs here and there, as far as BF2 goes.

Well, games like UT2k3-2k4 with mostly high settings and a few medium make it chug. And also Battlefield 1942... very low system requirements... chugs with the same amount of bots... at full high detail of course. I just completely dont understand for that game, but battlefield 2 or UT 2k3 or 4 is understandable a little more. Umm, most drivers are up to date, im not sure which motherboard I have, heres my DXdiag. Maybe someone can point me in the direction of a motherboard driver. Thanks for the help guys.

To answer your question, multiplayer focused games (e.g. Battlefield) aren't very optimized for single player because, lets face it, they're meant to be played online. Also, bot AI (trying to act like real humans) is a lot more of a system hog than having actual humans on computers to play against.

Also, find out the brand of your motherboard (unless you have one of those OEM Dell/HP/etc. jobs.. then good luck) go to the website and flash out your old bios. However more often than not it's a sound/video driver issue before it has something to do with the bios (but it couldn't hurt.. that is unless you flash it wrong or something http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif )

My Motherboard is a D915GAG. I dont know how to flash the bios... Any assistance would be nice. And I tried the Half-Life2 demo on a fresh install of my system and it chugs at some points and is amazing at others ranging in frames from 15fps to 200fps. Points of chuggin usuallly include walking into vast areas and then itll jump back up to about 30-50fps and with fire balls suddenly appearing... like from flammable tanks, itll drop to 10 and then back to normal... Is that normal? How does the normal game handle installed from the disks... im getting that for christmas... hope it handles way better then the demo.

EDIT: By the way drivers for the card are 5.12 Catas, should i roll back to older ones.

Since HL2 was optimized for ATi cards... that doesn't sound normal.

On my ATi HL2 runs perfectly smooth, all details maxed, 4xAA... averages around 150 and up FPS.

Try 5.10 or 5.11 drivers. 5.13 are due out in a week or so I think.

Even though HL2 was optimized for ATi cards, it actually runs better via nVidia on a lot of systems (including mine).

How did you flash your BIOS? If you used a program (depending on your board) there might be an option to either rollback or load an older edition (ala AsusUpdate).
