Well, not getting any sound in these kind of games could be from a number of reasons. If you have a newer computer, chances are you may be running into memory problems (i.e., not enough conventional memory). Or, if you are running them in DOS, your sound card may not be configured properly. If you have Win95, these DOS-based games can be hell to set up properly, but most of them will work if you tinker with things a bit.

...Must...Kill...Newbie...Arggg...

Just kidding, anyway though, I've never played Hocus Pocus, but try setting the music card to General MIDI or Adlib, I THINK it should be mainly the same as if it were sound blaster, and these are usually easier to configure.

As for Cosmo (hey, was he named after the magazine Cosmopolitan? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif), I've played the shareware version of it and had no problems with the sound, so I can't help you there except say your computer might be too fast, try buying a 486, they should be fairly cheap at a used computer store, and will run most older games a lot more reliably.

I have to play carnage in windows to get sound and music. I generally boot clean directly into dos as opposed to windows95 using a boot disk to play cosmo and such like, otherwise I cant get music! I can never get Midi sound except in windows.

Hi, this is my first message on this board. Anyway, I've noticed that the sound on games like (registered) Cosmo work only some of the time, and I couldn't get shareware Hocus Pocus to work at all with the music. (It refused to let me select "Sound Blaster" but when i put "None" the game itself worked.) Any reason for this? Hocus Pocus and Alien Carnage (which wouldnt work at all) did say not to use them with Windows, though.

It depends on the specific title.

Cosmo has Adlib music, but SFX are PC Speaker. Hocus Pocus has our later DOS based sound support, which means pretty much anything is supported - read the hphelp.exe file in the game directory.

You're probably selecting MIDI for music. Blaster not set means exactly what it says - the Blaster variable is not set right.

Check your sound card's docs on Sound Blaster emulation on DOS box games.

Ok, i am not a newbie but i have a similar problem which, it pains me to admit as i am a technical wizardy person type, but commander keen4-6 I cannot get any digitized sound working, i have an ES1868 plug and play audiodrive sound card, which works well in lots of other dos games ie doom duke3d etc. but not keen or come to think of it my snes emulator. I have tried messing about with the memory allocations and have tried many different set blaster settings, all to no avail.

in short, Apogee's sound technical department have created games that causes problems with today's sound cards.
so, enjoy.

To be fair most modern soundcards DOS Blaster compatability isn't as crash hot as the manafacturers would like us to think. On the other hand if any game is guarenteed not to work with my soundcard they are ineveritibly 3D Realms/Build Games.

You can't program games so that you're sure they'll still work with hardware from years in the future. You just can't ...

Thats true, dammit.

But hidden well on the net are these wizzo sound drivers which emulate long lost sound cards so that they can be run with new fabbo 16 bit 1024 channel wavetable cards which require a bloody hifi attachment to get the best sound from (well thats what i done, really pisses off the neighbers <g> ).

Any way, I am too lazy to find these things, a minute of online time wasted not on heat (playing duke naturally) or on quakeworld is time lost in my opinion. If anyone wants to look for some, well happy hunting http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif

IT WORKS!!!! Guess what! It works! Nearly eight months after this was posted, my new sound card corrected the problem and I can hear the Hocus Pocus music http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif
