I just checked my Gmail, and look at what I recieved -

According to that, I sent someone at nationalboard.org a virus - I don't know anything about nationalboard.org, and would never send anyone a virus anyways.

Can anyone help me figure out what the hell is going on? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Most likely it's Sober worm/virus on someone elses computer. And that person happens to have your e-mail address in his computer.

For example, you have the e-mail in some website or in some forum or anything, and the person has visited the site, thus downloading the website to cache file in his harddisk.

The virus/worm scans the computer (browser cache..anything) for e-mail addresses and makes a list out of them.

Then it randomly sends e-mail copies of it self, to list it makes, and also randomly picks "from" addresses.

So if you have your firewall/virus guard up to date, then no worries. Bad side is, that there is really no way to stop getting more of these.

I used to get dozens and dozens of these in a day when I had just released a mod with my e-mail address in the readme file.

Well there is a way actually: Always write your e-mail address like name [ at ] gmail.com or nameREMOVE-THIS@gmail.com

Go run a virus scan and get rid of it. Don't use the internet to do it, or it'll spread.

Indeed, go zap the bugger. You may note though, sometimes email clients, such as Hotmail, and maybe even Gmail, declare a file as infected when it may not be. If you run a virus scan, resent the file and you still get a error try other formats.

most viruses can be found as weird background processes in your computer, so what to do is open task manager and google the name of every running process, might take awhile.

If you find a one thats listed as a virus then kill the process.

The virus is most likely started via MSconfig.

go to start > run : MSCONFIG, then go under startup, if that same process is listed here, go back to the RUN dialogue and enter: Regedit.

then via regedit go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

And delete the key with the virus process.

This works for most viruses and effectively disables the viruses from running during startup and can give you the upper hand on removing them properly.

I don't think he has a virus, it's like the second poster says: the virus used his e-mailadres on someone else's PC.
I also receive e-mails of so called e-mails I sent that didn't arrive http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

He may still want to run one, just in case he does have a virus. Always make sure that there isn't a virus by running a scan.

Erm, that's the problem - I haven't had more than semi-functioning anti-virus program for about a Month now. After I got my new comp, I installed the free trial for AVG, then my trial ran out, so I tried installing Norton...

Norton royally f-ed up my computer. It crashed half-way through installation for god knows what reason, and has been in semifunctional state since - whenver I try to open a Word file, it attempts to scan it, but prompts me 3 or 4 times that I need to reinstall Norton. Problem is, I can't UNinstall it. Whenver I go to Add/Remove Programs or simply double click uninstall, nothing happens. And when I try to manually delete the files, it says they're being used by another program (even after I went to task manager AND msconfig and killed everything having anything to do with Norton OR Symantic!).

So I downloaded avast!, but whenver I open install, it first tells me TWICE that I've already got Norton on my computer and that could cause problems, then it gives me this error:

So after all of this hassle, all I have is free Zone Alarm, Microsoft Firewall, and Ad-Aware to protect my computer. Bleh. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Try opening in safe mode and closing ANY Norton processes, then try uninstalling Norton. If it worked, get AVG and Avast! again. Screw Norton.
