View Full Version : DNF Update

Before I've attempted on posting this, I went and read all the updates I could find on DNF. One thing that I noticed, is that all the posts and quotes where in 2000 and back.
As a great Duke fan, I've got one question for 3DR, staying away from launch date issues.
I would just like to know if the developing is going on track, and are you guys happy with the results sofar?
I think I speak for avery person that played any of the games in the series, I know that this will be a killer of a game. I've seen the movie in 2001. Was impressed then, it still impresses me know, obviously there are allot of improvements since then, which I think is great.
Keep up the good work guys, I'm sure it will be a HUGE success!! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The graphics engine is finished now, and apparently they've been pretty much on track since then. ( beginning of 2003 onwards) I hope 3dr are still excited, because I know I am. 3dr, you've found the tunnel now, do you see light at the end of it yet? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Euwie, the developers said the game is on good track.

Gr8, they did not say what their thoughts are on the game? I'm just scared that they are getting bored with it. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I really dont hope so.
I know when you tackle a big project like that, after a while you kinda loose interest.
Luckly there are people like us in the forums and fan clubs, keeping the interest high. I think we play a part in all of this as well. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Let us, as DNF fans keep the guys motivated to produce the best game that the gaming industry has seen, and will create another historical milestone for the rest of the world to marvel at http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think they are very motivated, or why do you think the game takes so long to develop?
they just want to make it better and better, and they have trouble saying: "now the game is good enough we can start the polishing".
they just always find a way to improve, which results in very long development aside from the restarts (which are also a result of: we want to do it better!).
so yeah I'd say they like it http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not saying they are taking too long. I know I got demotivated if I was developing on a big project. Had to find a way to get interested again before continue'n coding.
I'm sure that what they are doing must be http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif, thats why we as the fans should try and keep the motivation high.

I know you're not complaining about the game taking long, you're just wondering if the team likes it/if they are motivated.
So I was just pointing out that the fact the game takes long is an indication that they are very motivated http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Or else they'd have thrown a piece of crap out of the door 6 years ago to be done with it.

Perhaps, allthough, if they decided to through it out, i would still not be a piece of crap.
DN shal live in our hearts...... FOREVER!!
Just being active on these forums, makes me think back on all the lan sessions we had with our coax lan cables running 486's, playing until your eyes does not say open anymore.....

I'm not looking for info or media, all that I'm actually trying to find out is everything is still going ok. Thats all. Cause all of the reviews and posts and comments I've been reading lately is more than 4 years old. There was nothing said from the 3DR team past that...
Or I'm I not looking in the right places....?

There have been more recent "updates".
New Engine was started basically from scratch in 2002, and was finished end 2002/early 2003 or something like that. They're now building content.

What the hell does it mean to say the game is on track, and then in the same breath say there is no release date, there is no track, the game is done WID?
I call shenanigans!

You can still have internal schedules even if your release date policy is WID. I believe George said that they DO have them.

Yes, and I think it's probably more at the micro level - "should we cut this feature" "should we add this". Charlie has commented in the past that what he likes about working for 3DR is there are aren't any deadlines per se, and George has said recently that he doesn't know when the game will be done.
However, that doesn't mean they don't have a development plan to adhere to:
"We are probably still attempting too much with too few people but we continue to cut back to reasonable limits all the time as we move forward and re-evalaute things all the time. "
"No reason to freeze, as we have time to trickle in features until the game ships. But it's complete enough now that we could ship with no excuses and be happy."
"But just like in Duke 3D, when that engine was done, we still added small features like slopes and went back and retrofit the levels. We will still add things to the engine, as we can, where they make sense, and most importantly - where they won't delay us. We will add things if they are cool and don't impact things, but we will not add features that will cause big delays or mass reworking of existing content."

Oh he's said an awful lot in the past 4 years. In fact we really didn't know the full reasons for the delay until 2003/2004, when he disclosed that development hadn't been on track at all, until 2002. However, finally everything's coming together. Here's some quotes from the Shack, made in 2004:
"Well, we're closer than last year, and certainly moreso than any previous year We actually make progress now.It kinda wasn't prior to 2002, unfortunately. Two steps forward and 3-4 backwards."
"Hmmm...probably not getting key tech features done in time, and since we were unwilling to have an average looking game (projecting to when we could potentially ship), we re-did major chunck of the engine, which caused content to get redone. In short, we never had a solid tech base to build on, so it was the equivalent of trying to build a house without a solid foundation/structure."
"Yes, in hindsight, writing our own engine would have been the way to go, but that wasn't an option once we were so deep into things. We basically stepped back in early 2002, said "This just isn't going to work or be what we want" and spent most of 2002 re-writing things to get us where we needed to be, once and for all. Most of 2003 was spent on content creation and hring new people. Once we were able to make progress, content creation bottlenecks emerged that needed to be dealt with. So, it's been an interesting journey, but one I do not recommend be repeated, by anyone, ever Haha... "
http://ultr4kr4ss0rh4x0r.l33tw4r3z.de/duke4/thread.php?tid=581
George said again in 2004 that progress has been: "Steady. Creating new stuff every day and putting it in the game. Constant, forward progress."
The engine is now complete, so they've finally been able to make rapid progress on the content side of things. In October this year, George said that their current installation size was 9.6 GB, up from 8 GB in June. I think the game is rapidly approaching Alpha status if it hasn't hit it already, so I'm sure the team is more enthusiastic than ever. In fact George has said so himself. For example:
"No. The burnout's are gone. The people here are all excited and very well motivated."
Said in 2003.
