I've just realised that I prefer light text on a dark background, although ironically all the sites I have designed up to now have been dark text on a light background.
Next site I make I will probably give the user the option between the two by using CSS. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Normally in between, but close to white on black. The problem is that if you use pure white and pure black, the text starts to look blurry (unless you use like 18pt font). This forum does well, with white on dark grey.

I voted for white on black, but I really prefer white on Dark grey/Dark blue.

Black on white. White on black/grey is okay for sites like this which I just whiz through, but if it's a site I read a lot on it's more pleasant with black on white as that is what our eyes prefer.

This is what I'm settling on:

It's like medium-grey on off-white/lightg-grey bg for main content.

Yeah looks nice, could be just a tad more contrast, but not really essential.
I think this is an issue that is useless to ask users about though, in general, as they will go with coolness but doesn't know what their eyes prefer to look at. But in general it's the amount of contrast between the two that matters the most, if you do either way properly it's pretty much the same http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Light coloured text on dark (white on black).
Nice site btw, Phait. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/thumbsup.gif
