Gamespot lists the highs and lows of 2K5 (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/features/bestof2005/index.php)
I always enjoy reading these features, not only I get to hear what other people think, it also gives me a chance to recap the past year myself.
Long story short:
And the winner is... Resident Evil 4
Platform: GameCube
ESRB: Mature
Check Prices
A mere few days into the first month of 2005, we got our chance to play through Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube, which completely and utterly blew us away even in spite of our high hopes for how the long-awaited game would turn out.

Gotta love the dubious honors.
[u]Most Aggravating Frame Rate / Best Slideshow</u>
Quake 4
Platform: Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 version of Quake 4, however, doesn't look so hot. While it manages to capture most of the lighting effects and general feel of the game, it also turns into a slideshow whenever you're in a large area, whenever enemies attack...or really just whenever it feels like it.

That last one makes you think what was at fault, the system, or the ported code behind it?
FireFly

Ported code I bet. Call of Duty 2 is locked at 60 FPS - even a 7800 GTX or 1800 XT based system can't do that.
Carmack said that with code ported straight over from the PC, each core will be running at about half the performance of an equivalently clocked PC processor (i.e a P4). They're probably only using one thread and shadow volumes are very CPU intensive.

At the same settings of what Call of duty 2 for the Xbox 360 uses? I doubt that because I heard they don't even turn on anti aliasing on the Xbox360.

It uses AA, but no a very good version. The edges of anything close to you look great, but buildings in the distance look rough.

Isn't 360 like 4XAA and 2XAF or something like that?

I don't remember which... but the effect doesn't look as sharp as the AA used on the PC version of CoD2. To me anyway.
And remember, I have a trained artistic eye (college and everything) so I tend to notice things most people don't.

F.E.A.R. won best shooter. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif It should have also won Best Multiplayer and Best Game.
BTW, "Best Role-playing Game"? Isn't that a contradiction??

I play mine with AF and max AA; forget what the AA is.

It won "game with best AI", and "game with best graphics, technically".
I agree with Gamespot:

How about the (base) code behind it? Open areas aren't exactly smooth silk on the PC either, nor is fighting stroggs any better for the health of your graphic card.
You can try Half Life 2 for some bad ported code, of course.

What I meant was that they said that the 360 is this all powerful system that is able to bitch slap anything the PC can produce. Yet it can't really handle a game that mid to high end PCs can handle relativly without hitches.

Outside of these forums, I don't think DNF is even on anybody's radar these days. Really, how disappointing is it when vaporware stays vaporware?
I was also a bit surprised to see Mario Kart DS in the running for best game overall. I mean it's a terrific game, but best game released in 2005? Seems like a bit of a stretch.

Have you tried the multiplayer?
Just read through the whole thing, and Civ 4 won best PC game! \o/ And it was a finalist for best game overall.

I wouldn't even say it was the best DS game this year but as far as mainstream appeal goes its huge.

Land of the Dead the worst game of the year? Is this a joke?
Decker

Looks pretty bad:
PC version (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/929515.asp?q=land%20of%20the%20dead) - Avg Ratio: 61%
XBox version (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/929516.asp?q=land%20of%20the%20dead) - Avg Ratio: 49%
Maybe there just weren't any complete, UTTER disasters like Big Rigs released this year.
Travis

It's also the Xbox version of LOTD that is the worst game, not the PC version, and by the looks of the Gamerankings scores, the Xbox version is quite a lot worse.

Yeah, I sometimes forget that end of year awards are often more about popularity than an objective evaluation of a game's quality.

According to every review and play test, yes. Now 2xAA is required for every Xbox 360 game, otherwise it won't pass the certification process.
The problem is that for full AA support, Xenos (the GPU) requires that the geometry is tiled (split up into pieces) because the onboard EDRAM is only 10MB. When the EDRAM is used, 2xAA is 'free' and 4xAA only incurs a 5% hit. So AA really isn't a problem for the Xbox 360.
However, because the engine has to be designed with tiling in mind and because devkits with EDRAM only arrived a few months before the system's release, (to my knowledge) no launch games support tiling. So in the case of Call of Duty 2 they're probably using some sort of more limited shader based AA.

Well, just to clarify, its release date is "When It's Done" so it didn't actually get delayed because there is no estimated release date to miss.
There might be internally though http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As far as reader's choices go, yes. It's a vote after all.
Other than that, no way. Well, maybe for publications and sites with no integrity whatsoever. I give Gamespot more credit than that. Can't say the same for very many other sites, though.
There are tons of other factors involved, but quality dictates popularity in its own part. So they're not completely separate metrics.

Well the game's quality is fantastic too. But it's acceptance is what gives it the edge over stuff like trauma center, pheonix wright, sonic rush, lost in blue, castlevania, kirby's canvas curse, etc

Oh, I almost forgot to mention this.... the only reason you need to get a console is...
<font color="yellow">FAR-CRY INSTINCTS!!</font> It is not a rehash of the PC game, and is at least as good. I hope it comes to the PC, even as an expansion.
P.S.- No, I did not buy an X-Box, my son already has one. I got the game "for him" http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif, but I am borrowing it and the console while I'm on vacation. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif (Which is why I had to rush through the end of F.E.A.R.)
