It's Wolfenstein 3D's Birthday today. =) Wolf3D v1.0 is now 7 years old. =) Let's share our memories.

Wolfenstein 3D was really the first PC game I ever played. It was at a freinds house. That game rules. =) Party at my place:
http://www.3dportal.com/hideout/ and http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thewolfenstein3dfanclub

I'll also be in the #3DRealms IRC chat on GamesNET.net.

*sniff* I remember playing Wolf3D in the days when it was the only true FPS around. I sure miss ol' BJ. Wolf3D should get a real sequel, after Q3A. None of this "Spear of Destiny" or "sequel that became ROTT" nonsense. Although I do think that ROTT was the best FPS ever made, but this thread's not about disputing that.

Happy birthday, Blaskowicz! How's your grandson doing?

Ahh, it's been 7 years? I remember quite a while ago I was at one of my friend's house and his brother was playing a game on the computer (Wolf3D), and I thought it was so cool, so he put it on a disk and let me take it home (I remember it took about a minute to load a level on my computer, whoa, computers were slow back then), then my dad came home and got pissed that I was playing something so violent http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif, and made me delete it.

Then a few years later when I got a shareware CD it had Wolf3D on it, and I spent a lot of time on it, more years pass, I get SoD, would've prefered Wolf3D, but CyberExchange didn't have it, so I decided it would be worth $10 to get Sod instead.

About a year later I hear of the id Anthology, and planned to buy it with money I got for my birthday, but I didn't have enough left after I got 2 music CDs (doh!), that's my whole Wolf3D story, still love the game, I think the concept of nazi-killing was pretty good.

I love Wolf! It's better than Quake 2, I wish someone would make a multiplayer version! Id should make a polygon version, killing nazis is so much more fun than killing mutant zombie things!

Um . . . Wolf3D was the first real FPS, so . . .

In effect, isn't Wolfenstein 3-D's birthday also the birthday of the FPS game? I mean, there was "Catacombs" or whatever it was, but that wasn't a *real* FPS.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>but that wasn't a *real* FPS.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Might you care to elaborate? It was first-person, and you were shooting, thus making it a first-person shooter, right? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
I know some of my friends insist it was an CRPG, but that's way off... no character customization, no skill levels... just using magic instead of guns doesn't qualify a game as an CRPG. It's actually come to a blurred definition of what an RPG is, sadly, due to things like Diablo (a click-fest), and now I've even heard people calling the Leisure Suit Larry games RPGs... *geez*...
But anyway, my finest memory of Wolf3D: I had just gotten my first IBM-compatible, and it was already 1994. Back then, in the glory days, things were more about gameplay and fun than triangles and round shiny things, so naturally it was rather easy to get a copy of Wolf3D. I was already addicted from playing the shareware at school during recess (and sometimes during class > http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif), so as soon as I started playing I could barely bring myself to stop. Eventually, maybe two days to a week later, I had managed my way through a particularly nasty maze, when an interesting sign on the wall caught my eye. I still remember how confused the poor woman on the other side of the phone was when she picked up and I started screaming

Too bad. I wonder how many calls they get every year of people saying "Aardwolf." The ones that are serious, anyway.

And, although I've never played it, I hesitate calling Catacombs an FPS because it didn't have that "kill'em all!" feeling like you got with DooM or Half-Life, y'know?

Also, Leisure Suit Larry an RPG? That's funny. Who said that? It's an adventure game, dammit, and the world better never forget it!

What surprises me are the people who think that they found something that no one else did in the seven years the game's been out now.

Heh, I was going through the art in the shareware Wolf3D about a year ago and I found that sign... I thought about calling Apogee, but decided that someone else probably already found it out, wherever it was supposed to be in the game, by then.

You're kidding! I couldn't splatter enough zombies with that crazy three-way fireball thing! Also, the only feeling I get from Half-Life is not "keel'em all!" I'd describe it as more of a "run like **** and pray they don't pull out the grenades" sort of thing! http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is "Aardwolf"? When we got Wolf shareware in about 92, my mom saw me playing, thought it was too violent and made my dad delete it http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif so I never got to beat it or anything.

"Call Apogee and say Aardwolf." It's a sign that to this day is something that I
get asked about a lot. This is a sign that appears on a wall in a particularly
nasty maze in Episode 2 Level 8 of Wolfenstein 3D. The sign was to be the
goal in a contest Apogee was going to have, but almost immediately after the
game's release, a large amount of cheat and mapping programs were
released. With these programs running around, we felt that it would have been
unfair to have the contest and award a prize. The sign was still left in the
game, but in hindsight, probably should have been taken out. To this day,
Apogee gets letters and phone calls and asking what Aardwolf is, frequently
with the question, "Has anyone seen this yet?"

Shouldn't you've put that in quotes and said where it was from, XHuman? If I recall right it's from the Apogee FAQ, just mentioning this because of the recent controversy over copy/pasting of other people's work without credit http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Of course, let's not forget AARDWOLF.TXT.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Please Read!

At a point during the game Wolfenstein-3D, you may see a sign in a
room that says, "Call Apogee - Say 'AARDWOLF'". Please do not call.
The "AARDWOLF" sign and the maze it is located in were to be part of a
contest that Apogee was forced to cancel before it could be announced,
so you will save yourself some long-distance phone charges if you do
not call.

Also, you might find yourself locked inside a room in the maze once
you have found this sign (located in Episode 2, Level 8). The only
way out in this situation is to restore a saved game at a point prior
to where you were locked in. Also, it is not possible to get 100% of
the secrets on this level. For these reasons, Apogee Software does
not recommend that you try to complete the maze, unless you want the
challenge of mapping it yourself. Apogee does not provide support on
completing the maze, so be sure to save your game often if you try!

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, and we hope
that you enjoy your game!

AARDWOLF.FRM

This is from the text file which is part of the Wolfenstein 3D self-extracting ZIP file you can download thru DR.

So I guess I shouldn't call Apogee and say Aardwolf. However, I see no reason not to call and shout "aardvark" or "steppenwolf" or "steppenvark". http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

From Tom Hall's DOOM Bible:

Aardwolf. A maned striped mammal (Proteles cristatus) of southern and eastern Africa that resembles the related hyenas and feeds chiefly on carrion and insects. The aardwolf has sort of become the mascot of Id, appearing on Tom's Gotta Lists and the Commander Keen 6 Hint Sheet.

I'm working on Wolf3d for Unreal here:
http://www.unrealnation.net
It is almost exactly the same as the original now- except you've got to change the settings in Unreal.ini to make the sounds 1 channel. I'm going to make 3d models soon but for now there's the original sprites. It will be quite easy to turn it into a multiplayer game since it is using Unreal but I'd have to make a BJ model/sprite.
