Consider them in their prime. You had naked gun, and you had the man with the two brains. I personally cannot make the choice...

Leslie Nielsen, because he wisely chose to co-star with OJ instead od Queen Latifah.

Leslie Nielsen beyond a shadow of a doubt. He is a legend. Steve Martin is good, but nowhere near as good. I'm sure he's a better actor, but Nielsen is a far better comedian.

I can't choose either... although right now I'm fed up with trailers for Cheaper By the Dozen 2 (whose title seems to be more of a commentary on Hollywood's choice of movies at the moment), so Leslie is inching ever-so-slightly ahead... but then again, he tried to be so serious in Forbidden Planet and (until his character died in the first 5 minutes) The Poseidon Adventure, so that drags him back a bit... no, I can't choose -- surely you can't be serious, Dr. Hfuhruhurr! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I can't see how anyone would pick Leslie Neilsen. In the comedies hes in, what ends up being funny is mostly just weird crap happening in the background or the situation and not really so much how he delivers anything.

I'd have to go with Steve Martin based on all the things hes done including he can play musical instruments, and he also writes some of the movies hes been in, as well as novels. Like someone said about him before, to understand any of the movies hes in you have to look at the credits to see how involved he was in the writing process. Sometimes he wrote the thing, other times he just walked on as an actor. Which I think is basically all Leslie Neilsen does every time.

I actually liked him in Forbidden Planet.... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif and strangely enough, given the 1950's comic-booky style and campy tone of George Romero's Creepshow, I thought he still pulled off a surprisingly creepy as hell character in the small role he had there.

But as far as comedy goes.... I completely can't decide between the two. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif Both have been the best part of their own individual classic comedy movies. But I will say that Steve Martin seriously needs to stop starring in this shit like "Cheaper by the Dozen 2".

Police Squad! In Color! Starring Leslie Nielsen!. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup, Nielsen gets my vote.

Sure, Steve Martin was part of Saturday Night Live along with also-soon-to-be-stars such as Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Bill Murray and more...but I remember SNL more for John & Dan (or Jake & Elwood as I prefer) more than anything.

Little tidbit: The first Blues Brothers album "Briefcase Full of Blues" was recorded in 1978 at the Universal Ampitheatre whilst opening for...Steve Martin. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Another little bit of probably useless information gratefully handed out.

Yickle.

Steve Martin was never actually a cast member on SNL, he just hosted more than anyone else all those years, so people remember him as though he had been on the cast.

Steve Martin. All I remember Leslie for was NG, but Steve Martin... SNL, "Planes Trains & Automobiles", "Roxanne"... that and he can play the guitar and others - and well he's got humor.

It sure seems like Steve never changes from his white-haired self - as if he never grows older from the Steve we all know.

i actually liked Scary Movie 3, thought it was way better than the first 2...

i do like Steve Martin (although i almost killed myself for watching "cheaper by the dozen") but without Leslie, i wouldnt know anyone else who could fill his shoes in the Naked Gun/Spy Hard kind of films and have the same effect.

I'm not sure as though I understand why we're comparing the two. Because they both have white hair and do comedy flicks?

Leslie Nielsen is a mutli-faceted actor with a long history of performing in a wide variety of films, turning mostly toward spoofs and parodies in recent decades.

Steve Martin is former stand-up comedian who made a bunch of movies in the 80's that were great and today turns out one shitty movie after another because no one is any longer willing to write a script that would suit his specific brand of comedy.

Leslie Nielsen is the better actor and Steve Martin is the funnier comedian, but comparing the two is like comparing green apples to red apples. They're both old white guys who do funny movies, but the comparison ends about there.

Older male actors
Similar appearance (kinda)
Similar film styles (slapstick physical gags) [see : Naked gun & Bowfinger]

EDIT : MOTHER FU*KER! what's the name of the film with steve martin where he plays a famous violin guy that pokes out people's eyes?

Martin did some classic SNL bits like the Barbarians,Witch Trials and the one where Socarates didn't know that hemlock was actually poison.

Goddamnit, I was hoping this thread was about an upcoming fight to the death between the two.

Considering that most people have an uncle and/or pet dog who is funnier than Steve Martin, I think it's pretty obviously Leslie for the win.

Neilsen's "comedic" ability was that he wasn't funny. His ability to treat the bizarre comedy of Airplane! and The Naked Gun as actual drama made it funny. I don't know if he even wrote any of the stuff he was in, but once he started trying to be funny, he wasn't funny anymore.

Martin was a much better comedian. The Jerk, The Lonely Guy, The Three Amigos... Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Roxanne, Parenthood, L.A. Story, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There was some classic stuff in there. Not to mention his stand-up and SNL appearances.

I'm not saying Martin was the greatest, but he was funnier than Neilsen.

With that being said, I think Martin's fall has been much bigger than Neilsen. Neilsen's made a career out of being in a certain genre of movie, and once the really good practitioners of it left, he was stuck with movies that were helmed by folks ranging from mediocre to down right dumb.

Martin on the other hand started going down with My Blue Heaven. I think he gave it his all, but I remember leaving the theater thinking "I can't believe I just saw a bad movie with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis in it."

After that Martin started hitting the same role again and again. I loved Parenthood, but he was almost the same guy in Father of the Bride, Housesitter, and so on.

Sgt. Bilko and Bowfinger were the last movies of his that I enjoyed.

Bringing Down the House should have been good, but they went the wrong way with it. He should have gone for Queen Latifah. It could have been a nice satire of the "polite" racism that exists on both sides of the coin. Instead, we get Martin floundering through an emotionless void of a movie.

I agree with Kronx. All Leslie Neilsen did was stand around in an absurd situation, and what made it kind of funny was that while doing it he just had the same dumb, blank and unknowing look on his face. There were funny moments in his movies but most of them weren't really because of him.

Steve Martin stopped being funny when he starred in cheaper by the dozen. Leslie Nielsen hasn't stopped being the cheesy Frank Drebin character, and I think that's what makes him funny.
