Here's a link to a Jack Thompson inteview in which he actually manages to stay calm and polite http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Jack Thompson: Yes, put down the controller and get a life. Video gaming is an escapist activity and you’re being exploited by these companies. It’s not healthy; I worry about someone who would play Grand Theft Auto for ten hours a day. It’s a masturbatory activity, and it would be better if people put down the controller and went outside.

I CAN MASTURBATE WHEN I LIKE, KTHNXDIE

Jack Thompson is an idiot. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

He's harassing us. Take him to jail.

He still came across as an arrogant prick though. However, he did explain that he wishes to keep games out of KIDS hands, which I completely agree with, and suggested that adults should still be allowed to play them if they choose to.

If only he'd of said that in the first place, maybe he wouldn't of become a joke. Gaming press afraid of him? 'lmao'.

The last line should have been: "Who are you, and what have you done with Jack Thompson?!?"

Good find Laffer -- one wonders if he'll stick with what he's said here, and actually tone down his belligerence if US game manufacturers actually do try to clamp down on games being sold to children. However, it's really the shops who are selling them to minors -- an M-rating in the USA or an 18-rating in the UK, it shouldn't go to little 10-year-olds, at least not unless it's via educated parents who think their child can handle it! Anything else is asking for trouble, or more precisely, another Jack Thompson tirade http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I seem to remember he did say it once, and then said one game (possibly Killer7) shouldn't go to anyone! He's not even consistently inconsistent...

Yep. Its the retailers. And if they market them to children, I KNEW I saw a GTA:LCS poster in 4th Grade's English class. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I saw a blurred oral sex scene. Beyond that, I don’t want to get into details. It’s irrelevant; we all know what’s in the scene, and kids shouldn’t be subjected to that.

So he only saw the blurred version?

Again, why can't people see that GTA: SA is for 18 and older?

And I loved that comment about the gaming community being scared of him. Ever since the Penny Arcade inicident, nobody can take him seriously anymore.

After reading the whole article, all I can do is laugh AT him. But I can't since it's internet harassment. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

It’s a masturbatory activity, and it would be better if Jack put down the lawsuits and went outside.

There, I fixed it for him.

He's scared of the gaming community. This is like the scenario of The Fox and the Grapes, where Thompson lambasts the gamers because he can't scratch them.

Keep in mind I know nothing about Jack Thompson when I posted this after being awake for like 30 hours, and I did not read the article.

What the hell does he care if someone under 18 plays a videogame?
Now a lot of parents don't know what's in the games when they buy it for a 10 year old... but what if they do know what's in the games, and they're buying a game as cartoony as Halo 2 for say... a 16 year old?
Is that person going to suddenly go on a rampage?
There were still school shootings 10 years ago,
and that was even before Grand Theft Auto and any other semi-realistic videogames were released.

Besides, there's no way in hell you can keep violent videogames from minors,
just like there's no way in hell you can keep ALCHOHOL from minors.

His only option is to attempt to ban violent games alltogether, but with the ammount of violent games already released, and the ammount of home-videogame development, there's no way he could contain all the games being downloaded off the internet, or burned from one CD to another.

What the hell is he trying to do?
Yell at the top of a mountain "VIDEOGAMES ARE BAD!"?

I said it before, and I'll say it again.
The interactivity involved between the player and the game is so limited, and the graphics in videogames have not even yet reached the point of photo-realism, videogames are no more influencial than anything else we hear or see.
If you want to ban violent videogames, then you have to ban violent movies and violence in general.
Besides, GTA is a crappy third person shooter.
It's not like you're wearing 3D goggles with motion sensors on all your joints, going around raping people.

And did it ever cross your mind that maybe
the videogame doesn't turn good people violent, but the violent people just happen to be attracted violent games?

I can't imagine Charles Manson playing the Spongebob Squarepants videogame.

This is a touchy subject for me, as I have been playing violent videogames since I was very young myself.
For the record, I've never killed anyone. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I love this guy, lines like this make me laugh out loud:

Back in the day, Eliot Ness didn’t go after the small-time criminals. Eliot Ness went after Al Capone. Actually, I must offer my apologies to Al Capone. He only targeted adults, corrupt adults with his crimes. Capone never went after minors.

I watched The Untoucables at I could swear a young girl gets blown up at the beginning.

Back in 1992, I was involved in the battles over Ice-T’s “Cop Killer.” I invested in Time Warner then to convince them that releasing this song was a bad move on their part, and I succeeded. The strategy is to convince shareholders that their leadership is mismanaging their investment, and causing damage to the company.

lol, imo this guy is stupid when he says officially that he wants to cause damage to a company where he is a shareholder...

No, he said the management is causing damage to the company, and he wants to make that apparent! He's not quite that idiotic... or do you mean he's damaging it simply by being a shareholder (i.e. negative publicity)? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Screw him. He's comparing himself to one of the greatest American legends, and then APOLOGIZES to a murderer?!

Screw him!

Of course. Cause everybody knows that minors playing games that aren't meant for them is far worse than killing people.
