Advanced Windows Care (http://www.iobit.com/WindowsCare.htm) - This program optimizes and speeds up a lot of things. I've used it for a while, now.

PageFile Defragger (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PageDefrag.html) - This program will defrag your pagefile during your next reboot.

Let's see what this can do for my dad's computer. Damn thing runs like a tank. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif

Check for spyware. And if it doesn't have much RAM, it could be using the pagefile a lot.

The biggest slowdowns are fragmentation, too many backgroup apps, inefficent background apps (e.g. Norton anti-virus, NOD32 is many times faster), too many background services running (see Admisnistrative tools->Services). Of course you have to be careful, because if you stop needed services, some programs may cease to function.

Oh another tip, if you use WindowBlinds or another skinning app, be sure to disable the Themes service. You don't need it anymore.

If his system is a 1.3 GHz machine, it wouldn't really make a difference. I just defragged and spywared out his system, and it's still slow. It's got 512 MB RAM, and a 120 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. The CPU is probably the bottleneck here.

Can Advanced Windows Care make backups?

I don't see a Backup function, but you can always create a Restore Point before you run it (if you're using Windows XP). I've never had any problems with it.

This works well. It significantly increased my computer performance.
