Raptor engine, where can I get it and how much will it cost me?
I want to make a much more detailed version of raptor that is harder to beat. It takes me only a few hours of play to whiz thru the whole thing.

About 500,000 bucks. And you would have to make a completely new game, without the name 'Raptor' anywhere in the title, unless you bought the rights for that too(estimated another 500,000...)

500,000 nah, I could buy 2 quake 2 engines at that cost, maybe even the quake3 engine, but I don't think the raptor engine would cost THAT much, maybe $20,000
ya never know, publishers can be greedy.

hehe, Carmack gave me a quote of a couple hundred thou on the Q3 engine
"John- How might I be able to obtain the Quake 3 engine?

It is really expensive -- several hundred thousand dollars. If you are serious, contact Todd Hollenshead ******@idsoftware.com.

John Carmack"

Then Todd had to say:"While we're not yet licensing the engine (won't until the game is done; release date: when it's done), we're not particularly interested in low "up-front" cost deals. We will have a pricing structure that will offer some flexibility, but anyone who licenses the technology will have to have significant funding (either internal or external). If you're looking for a lower cost solution, we could discuss Quake II engine licensing, which is, of course, available now. The basic price structure is $120,000 up front guarantee against the greater of 3% of the wholesale price or 9% of the developer gross."
Ha. My point is proven. If you did pay 1 mil for it, you got ripped. If I ever made a game engine, I'd sell it with the game. Free of cost. Free engines are cool. Everything should be free.

Ask him about Q2 licensing then.

That's exactly the same point I was going to raise.

You don't expect to pay the same on a Pentium 350MHz now than you did a year and a half ago.

You'll also have to note that they sold it to a competitor that has proven it can take a chunck of money away from id Software. They need to total what they might loss. Also Quake 2 engine was newer then, therefore more expensive.

Very true. Q2 is ancient now. I feel like licensing Build.

Right - and I'm not going to let you box me into somewhere around what it cost by guessing, either. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif

You can't. First, we're not licenesing it, second, you couldn't afford it, anyway.

Let's put it this way - if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it.

Stop being so damn touchy. I wasn't trying to 'box you into the amount'. I don't really even care how much it cost. And technically I could license the engine from Ken Silverman couldn't I?

Damn, you people are weird... http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif I'll just make my own "Raptor", either that or give it a makover and illegally sell it as mine http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

He probably meant they're not licensing it anymore. With games like Extreme Paintbrawl, I'm not surprised http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Besides, it's already been done. See the game Demonstar.

Just as a note Blood 2's Engine (litech?) costs 250,000 to license...

Why would ANYONE want to license the Raptor engine? You could make a game like it for Windows 9x without too much trouble. With DirectX, 2d games are NOT hard to make anymore.
