View Full Version : F.E.A.R. On MX440...
Micki!

I just got it today (January 26), ultra cheap... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Even though, i KNOW it will not run good... (hell, Doom 3 didn't, and looked like crap, but i managed to beat it several times anyways)
Anyways, my problem is, (and i feared that from reading about it in the manual already) that it doesn't support my current card, the MX440... (<-- http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tinyted.gif)
Now, it's not anything bad... Becasue i'm planning to get a new PC soon... But i'd love trying it out on my current Not-so-good machine... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
So, is there ANY way to cheat my system, to make it work on my non-supporting machine..? Or perhaps some patch which makes it support more cards..?
I'd apreciate any help for this matter...

It doesn't work because you don't have pixel shaders... even if there is a program to cheat, the game would simply crash because it doesn't change the fact your card doesn't support pixel shaders.

Oh nooooeeees..! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
I don't see why pixel shaders wouldn't be an option, which simply could be turned off... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Pixel Shaders is no longer a nice bonus, but a requirement.
Could also be another feature that prevents you from playing it, but I suspect it's Pixel Shaders http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What where the first Geforce cards with Pixel Shader support ?
Nessus
01-26-2006, 01:16 PM
I believe the Geforce 3 was the first to have hardware pixel and vertex shader support, some of the earlier one's may have emulated it in software but I wouldn't think that would be a viable option for a game like FEAR.
Micki!

The minimum graphics card requirement (on the box and manual) happens to be the GeForce4 TI... Which btw supports DX8... While my http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif-card supports DX7...

As i said... I did Doom3 on that machine...
It's like playing F.E.A.R. Without karate... But the slowmotion is there... (running on 5-15 FPS) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FEAR is a lot more demanding than Doom 3, Micki!
The game convinced me to upgrade THEN, instead of waiting for games like Prey.

Yeh, I ran Doom 3 really well, and Half Life 2. FEAR was the first game that showed my system was starting to struggle. I'll probably buy a completely new system soon enough, If I can get a job finally I want to start building it around the time Oblivion is out.
Micki!
01-26-2006, 02:10 PM
Yes, i know it's way more demanding... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I just hoped i could turn off every kind of eye-candy, to get some good gameplay instead... (Doom 3 was more like "better graphics than gameplay"... This is different...)

After having finishing both games each at least once before, I can definitely say it isn't different.
F.E.A.R.'s graphics kept the game alive at least as much as Doom 3's.
I played some levels on my old graphics card, in FEAR, and I didn't like the game.
However, when I got my new graphics card and additional RAM, the game was very much different and one of my favourite games all of a sudden.

Really..?
I would've bet that FEAR was better than Doom 3's gameplay, with all the karate, and the story and stuff... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
Anyways, i'll se if i can try it at one of my friends, or by my Cousin... (they have WAY better PC's than me)
Still, it's sad i can't try it, just when i've got it... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't think there's a fallback for the per-pixel lighting they use, so that would be one justification.

I hardly ever use melee, because it's very risky.
But maybe FEAR's gameplay is better than Doom 3's yes, depending on one's taste. But that still doesn't change the fact that FEAR without decent quality graphics has the same detraction from the game as Doom 3 without decent quality graphics.
Hmmm... maybe FEAR without a decent graphics card is even worse than Doom 3 without good graphics card... since I thought the visual upgrade made FEAR a lot better, unlike Doom 3 which was only slightly better, after buying a new graphics card.
As for the story (which you mentioned, which hasn't anything to do with gameplay). I liked Doom 3's story better, since FEAR's is very difficult to follow and understand.
My lack of English skills didn't stop me from understanding Doom 3's story (less difficult words, and abaility to read as slow as you want, or replay audio logs as much as you want).
While in FEAR they use a lot of difficult words, hardly any emotial messages (emotional messages are easier to follow because they're more immersive), and you only get to hear the message ONCE.

MX440? Damn. You really need to upgrade that thing, I doubt you'll be able to run any game released from here out.

Indeed... I'll be getting a new PC... sometime soon... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
Cerb@
I understand you, regarding the story of both games...
I agree with the fact that it's easyer to understand (Doom 3 that is)
But since i've only heard about FEAR's story, i can't comment about it...
Anyways, i guess you're right about graphics playing a bigger role to fit FEAR's atmosphere and stuff, to keep the whole feel of the game...
(I had to turn up the some options in Far Cry, because i didn't like it, if enemies didn't have decalls when being shot) http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mryuck.gif

Cerb, maybe you just can't understand stories. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The story is easy to follow for me (still haven't beaten it, mid-terms) and I really pick this stuff up.
For example:<table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler"> In MGS2 the player already know that Solid Snake is alive when they are playing as Raiden. But they keep mentioning a dead body of "Solid Snake" missing his right arm (I'm pretty sure right) and I know it's really Liquid's body.</td></tr></table>
As for FEAR on a MX440, forget about it. My brother cranks <25 FPS on his FX5200.

Yes, you're loosing a lot if you don't have dynamic shadows on your character.
It's very cool to crawl in air ventilation shafts, and pass by a light source, and see your shadow catching up with you over the wall, kind of rotating http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I think you'll like FEAR better.
I can't comment really, Doom 3 was one of the first first person shooters I played in years, then a year of less good games, and then came FEAR and it excited me as much as Doom 3. So I guess FEAR is even better then http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, I got the story in any oither first person shooter, and all other story based games like adventure games.
The only other games where I got trouble with was max payne 1 & 2. (A betrays B who is on his turn betrayed by c who is shot by A so B get away with it except C kills him so C thinks he survived and then D kicks in... just an example of confusing stuff http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Actually, you can do alot more in F.E.A.R than in Doom III. Not only does it add a whole new gameplay mechanism (stealth) it adds better scenery, better lighting, better weapons, better fighting, WAY better storyline/cinematics (I actually found the little girl to be scarier than Doom III's baddies XD) and it had better NPC's to communicate/mess with. Ofcourse this is all in "personal taste", but I found the whole game to be ALOT more enjoyable.

Cerberus_e
01-27-2006, 02:36 PM
Well, next time you'll be careful when you buy a card, because your overclocked Geforce 2 dates from before 2002, so you can't complain http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
And you don't need to get FPS of 60... If you go that high you risk tearing if your refresh rate is set to 60 (like it is on my flat screen).
Anything above 30 is good enough to be very enjoyable.

I had a GF4 MX 4000, and I upgraded for FEAR, Serious Sam 2, Quake 4, etc. And to run all the 2004 games with the settings up.
I tried to run the FEAR demo with my GF4, and it didn't work. I then used a program to force it to run it, and I could walk around, but I couldn't see anything. I couldn't even see the menus, I just blindly got into the game. The same thing happened with Bloodrayne 2.

I feel your MX caused pain. It really is a crap card. Back when I bought my computer, I didn't know it was crap. I would've got a better one if I knew it was even worse than a GeForce 3...stupid misleading video card labelling. So many consumers wouldve thought it was better than a GF3, maybe even some of them 'upgraded' to a GF4MX from a GF3, thinking it was better.

I thought about upgrading my aging Geforce Ti 4200(128Meg) to a 6200. I've seen these cards with a whopping 512MB of VRAM http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif.....! I then learnt these cards were power hungry(only had 350W PSU) and my Sempron 2600(Socket A) would be a bottleneck. And another fact is MS is coming up with a new version DirectX which emulates DirectX 9.0 and below. Rather than spending money on a upgrade, I decided to hold back and see how the new DX10 cards will perform and the another thing is DX10/Vista recommends an ATi card. So bye bye Nvidia.

there is a way... you need to get the old old old nvidia drivers
45.something
I think they might even be a hacked version.
Basically the mx440 doesn't have pixel shaders, but with these drivers it compensates with the CPU or something.
It allowed my friend to run splinter cell : PT and Doom 3 on his mx440. Not very well of course. Splinter Cell wouldn't load without the old drivers, saying "your card does not have pixelshader support", but with the drivers it loaded, altho the NV and thermal vision suffered a bit...

Only because ATI's Vista drivers are currently more mature.

So, is there ANY way to cheat my system, to make it work on my non-supporting machine..? Or perhaps some patch which makes it support more cards...
I guess you could hack DirectX and make the pixel shaders either not do anything or write some code to process them.
It'd be kind of slow...

Oh no... I can't figure how to hack systems and stuff... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
Anyways, according to Cerberus, i'll become a bastard if i get my new system...
Hey, i could live with that..! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It's not like the first time an Alien was called a bastard anyways... http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You still remember those browser wars? Rememeber how the sky came crashing on Netscape? Well if M$ wanted ATi to win the graphic section of PC gaming they'll go all out.

Doom 3 runs perfectly fine [albeit slowly] on an MX card with no modifications, it doesn't need pixel shaders, and Doom 3 supports it. Splinter Cell, like you said, doesn't.
45.something drivers would have to be pretty damn old, aren't they up to 8x.something now?

But they're not. They've treated both companies fairly equally.
It's just that ATI have now decided to focus on Vista, to score some OEM wins, so when their cards are advertised they can say they're 'Vista ready' That's why Microsoft are recommending ATI right now.
Now the real interesting issue would be...
Could F.E.A.R run on a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP? http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dopefish.gif

You mean MS didn't choose them because they were the ones who were working on X360 graphic chipset?

The discussion you are referring to was back when those Voodoo screenshots were first shown. I never said what you are claiming. I said Doom III shadows could never work on a Voodoo 2/3. Please take note of the word "shadows". Can't be done.
BTW, the Voodoo Doom requires this patch. (http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1462)
