I just hope it isn't like D3 or HL2. Release the game, then two months later release a demo.

IMO that kindof defeats the purpose. I will be buying PREY at launch, no doubts in my mind, but having a taste of the game before hand would be totaly badass.

FEAR, Serious Sam 2, Call of Duty 2, and a shitload of other top name games all released demos a good month before release.

I think there was a similar topic in the dnf forum long ago. And I think either Joe or George said that the first wave would be off the hype of screenshots and videos... and when the sales would start to calm down, a demo would then stir things up again.

But I may remember this wrong or their feelings may have changed. Also, Prey is a different game than DNF.

That's why we're releasing a demo of Prey before the game comes out, and I feel very strongly that the demo will be our most important marketing tool for the game, by a long shot.

Prey is a complete new different game than Doom III or Quake 4. For me, Quake 4 is just the brother of Doom III ans Prey is the Unknown cousin of Doom III.

I do have one question though for the developers regarding this: In Doom 3 (and Quake 4) I sometimes get a slight pause when opening a door even on medium texture quality (with my 128mb card), I assume that's because new data needs to be loaded. IT doesn't always happen, but breaks the immersion for me since I associate doors with pauses now.

Will that also be the case sometimes when a portal opens, then, in Prey? Since data needs to be loaded as well from the room on the opposite side of the portal.
Maybe that doesn't happen for you developers, but don't forget it happens every now and then in Doom 3 & Quake 4 for me. Even when turning on caching.
Maybe I'll be able to tell when a portal opens just by recognizing the kind of pause. This could be an unwanted warning for me (maybe an enemy spawned, or they'll trick me with their impossible geometry).

That's the thing, though. I want my Prey and DNF experiences to be as perfect as possible. No turning nothin' down. :) Besides, Doom III started running pretty poorly towards the end even on medium.

Then there is something weird with your computer, since we have a very similar computer and Doom 3 runs very smooth, even at the end :)
And the difference between medium and high, you don't really see it. I assure you it's not worth spending 1500 euros on, or whatever currency the official currency of your country is.

What kind of card are you actualy running? 128MB is supposed to be for medium texture, but it can do high. I run high on mine with 2xAA and still get silky smooth frames in both D3 and Quake 4.

What are the rest of your system specs, maybe something is causing a bottleneck with your system.

Yeah a 9800 (even if it is a PRO) is getting outdated. His amount of RAM could be a hold back to.
It would be better to have an even 1GB, that would help with pauses and stuttering if he has those problems.

I have a x800 GT 128MB, works great. But remember ATi cards didn't start taking advantage of PS 3.0 til the x1800 series.

Hi, haven't checked in in a while. Cerberus is essentially correct about my system, but I have a gig memory. I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong, because it's never been really great with games. I don't know what, though. Maybe a flaky stick of RAM? I ran a memory test and it came back okay, but who knows. All I know is, I run certain games, and when I come back to my desktop, the system is hung up for about 30 seconds because of the memory.

Yeah, something may be wrong. How often do you Defrag or run programs like AdAware on your system?
What type of ram do you run?

Yeah, I defrag fairly often and run Spybot. I run Ad-Aware every once in a while. It's PC3200 RAM.

UT2004 runs very well with settings pretty high though. It happens to be on my second hard drive. I don't know if that would make a difference. BTW, I have never been able to put on AF or AA. That slows things down, even in old games like Elite Force 2.

Have you also tried scanning your PC for Adware and Spyware? They could be taking up some system resources. Of course, I'm assuming that your PC is both a Gaming PC and an Internet PC, right?

As a reminder, don't put in the quotes. If this works, try a higher number. This worked for me when I use to use an older 128 MB video card, before I bought the NVidia 6800 GT. I had gotten a 20-30% increase in performance, and I diddn't have the pause or jittery problems anymore.

I don't have Doom3 installed any more, but I think I did try that. I also have to note that performance wasn't great towards the end, but it wasn't absolutely horrible either. It would be smart for me to try the demo just to see what performance will be like, but I also don't want the gameplay spoiled before the full game.

Ah! Good move by 3DREALMS, releasing a demo before the game's release date is just the right thing to do for Prey. That way People can be able to feel the game and see how well it is different for many other Doom 3 powered FPS out there!

No way are you getting anything over 20 fps in doom3 on a 9800 pro using AA. Using AA on a resolution under 640x480 will just make the game look like puddle of colors so it's better to play without it at those resolutions anyway. And don't tell me you rather play with AA on at 15 fps then with it of at 20 fps.

I was playing it at 800x600 (no AA or AF)at low or medium and getting around 10-30 fps on my 9800 pro. Once I switched to a geforce 6800 I got about 60 fps most of the time at high 1024x768 except a few places where the rest of my system limits me like the final boss. Playing on 9800 I was not very impressed by Doom 3 and got bored a few levels in but it was awsome on the 6800 once the gameplay was all smooth.

I kind of regret getting 6800 since it turned out I can't realy use all it's power, should have gone with 6600 instead. Will be upgrading within a year and will need to get a new gfx card again since my current machine has agp.

The 9800 pro is awsome for any pre doom3 engine games like hl2 though which I could play with everything maxed out at 1024x768.

I played Doom 3 on a Geforce FX 5200 and that's what I call playable.
A Randeon 9800 pro is excellent for Doom 3, you can turn on antialiasing, the most demanding option from the menu :)

Ras I believe, but I suppose this can be used as my universal tip. If and when Prey comes out and you folks here are having a bit of trouble with the frames, try to use that command for Prey. It may make a difference.

Most likely not. The trend is to release a demo after a game, and it's a much better marketing technique. Why risk losing potential buyers based on a demo?

A consumer may decide they don't like it based on the demo and not buy the game. IE - losing a lot of pre-orders.

Prey isn't frontloaded game that gamers will be dying to get in the first days of release. At least not right now.

And also, Scott Miller said that Prey's gameplay mechanics can't be felt through videos. So that's a good reason to work for releasing the demo.

And a smart customer will most probably not pre-order a game if there is no demo. Only hard-core fans do pre-orders. I agree, but I was just stating that releasing demos after the retail version has been the norm for a while. Sadly, and I believe it's for the reasons I had stated above.

Normally I would completely agree with you. But in the case of 3DR I have blind faith since they have never dissappointed me with a game. :) So if they release a game in a genre I like, I buy it. ;)

Alright, but remember just because you feel this way others do not. I loved almost every old Apogee/3DR game from the past, however other companies have shown me blind faith is no longer valid. Too many of my favourite companies have done stupid things and released shitty games for me to just start trusting any of them without demos. ;)

Not all of them will, but there are probably going to be some, and that's what counts.
So yes from a marketing point of view it's definitely smarter to release a demo AFTER the game. Except when Christmas is too close of course, which is irrelevant in this case. (Well, there is the Belgium national holiday the 21st of July, but no one is going to buy a present that day)

its a hard call, I think if the game is good enough they dont need to release a demo cause everyone will be playing it and telling their friends that the game is fantastic. it worked with me on olbivion and i wasent disapointed. i usually play the demo befour i buy a game though cause i dont want to be spending 50+ dollers on some shitty game. prey looks good though, but i think i would want to play the demo first. what happend to share ware anyways? :P

I don't think such thing will happen. Even if it was an exclusive demo for a specific gaming website, the demo will be available on most gaming websites in no time. ( just like what happened with the video released on gamespot).

Well, they said (in the last update) that they will try to release the demo around the time of the release. Preferably before but they can not tell for sure. :)
