View Full Version : Giant Eagle's Video department SUCKS!

Lately, I've been trying not to rent many games from Hollywood Video cause the 360 games are $7.50 each. I was in Giant Eagle, and decided to go to their video department. I used to be able to rent games there a dollar cheaper, so I figured it was worth a look. They had almost all of their 360 games in. I went to rent Call of Duty 2. The price was $9 for 7 days. Right then I was thinking of not renting it, and then the clerk said there was a $300 deposit! http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif She said it was to make sure they got their games back. Well, they won't have to worry about their games getting stolen with shit like that. Nobody is even going to rent them. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif If I had $300, I'd buy Call of Duty 2, and all the other games I want. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

So, I am going to call Hollywood Video (which is very close to the Giant Eagle) and ask to talk to their manager. They have few copies of all the popular games, so I'll tell them to stock up. This will force Giant Eagle to rethink their methods. I thought the $7.50 at Hollywood was bad, but after today, it doesn't seem so bad.

Here in the videoland store we have a better system: you just show your identity card (passport?) when you rent a game/film.

Gamefly. If you have a bank card or credit card, or your friend or parent lets you use theirs, it's totaly worth it. $22 a month, no late fees, 2 at a time. I'm in my first month still, but I've played the shit out of NFS:MW and I'm just getting into COD:2.

When I'm done, they go back in the mail, and it will be Amped 3 and King Kong time.

I actually saw it on a sign first before I went to the clerk, but it was so absurd that I didn't believe it. I had to ask if it was true.

Now, I could understand a $60 deposit, but $300?! Crazy.

Yeah, it looks like that's my new rental place. http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I never scratch discs, so I should be ok. I always take good care of games.

Ive heard of hollywood video but never been in there. The two places ive been to are "Blockbuster video" and "family video."

Blockbuster used to be cool untill they went huge in the past 10 years, now they over charge (like 7 dollars for 3-5 nights or something...).

Family video rocks though. They charge 5.50 for 5 nights, which is the cheepest Ive found. (Usted to be $5.00 but oh well.... But for older games they chage like 2.50 for 7 nights, which makes up for it.) and they also have older DVD's and vhs movie section for $1!!!! One freakin dollar for 5-7 nights. You cant beat that...

I remember when the Hollywood video franchise first opened. We have one of the first ones. Prior we always had little hole in the wall video stores that had like one copy and not everything.

Then Hollywood video moved in. They had 5-10 copys of everything.

We can rent computer games at 99 percent of all video stores here, I heard you can only rent console games in America.

$300 for a game deposit?! For that you may as well just buy a whole new Core System 360. I better hope that Iggle Video (the video store that Giant Eagle has) doesn't do that to me. So far, Iggle's been fairly nice here in the Cleveland area, haven't had trouble renting from them in the past.

I have trouble believing you on the $300 deposit. My Giant eagle doesn't do that... They just charge you for the game if you don’t bring it back. (For my video second they have your home phone and address) You might want to report these guys because I think they tried to steal $300 of your money. Or you just named a crazy prince...

Considering some dumbass kid manages to scratch a 50 dollar game before it's been rented four times most of the time, I wouldn't even rent games if I were starting a video store (not that anyone with a brain would do such a thing nowadays).

Hell, you're lucky if some crackhead doesn't come open an account and rent five games, only to sell them back to an EBGames or some other buyback place for a quick fix. Not like vid stores can afford to do credit checks on everyone who opens an account. You're even luckier if the crackheads don't just steal them outright off the shelves and bolt out the door knowing that the police don't really give a shit about anything but discounts on donuts.

See, now you've got me ranting.

They have the games inside the DVD cases on the shelves in the US? Holy shit that is stupid.

Last time I been to any video store the DVD itself is in another container in their stock room. Video stores have always been that way with everything since the first one opened.

Blockbuster does rent out PC games.

$300 deposit is part of ***** preposterous business model, if that wasn't exaggeration.

What I say is true. I believe they did this because they must get a lot of games stolen. $300 is overkill, though. I'm not bullshittin you. I'm not exaggerating, either. I wish I was. Then I'd be playing COD2 right now.

Somebody should explain the wisdom of this to the #2 chain in the country (Movie Gallery). I keep some of the games behind the counter, but it's against company standards, and I'm merely banking on the fact that our district manager is reasonable enough not to fire me over it. (He'd have to fire three or four other managers in the area as well if he did.)

My local EB Games used to have N64 games in little packages. Just cardboard with stickers holding the games in. One day I went back, and found the same boxes, but instead of the real game, they had scanned pictures of them. They did this cause they were getting ripped off badly. For some odd reason, they went back to having the games in the packages.

Gamestop's gotta be the exact same way. After all EB and GameStop are one in the same now, so why not? They both seem to do about the same stuff anyway.

Yeah. One thing that pisses me off is that EBGames and Gamestop merged, but I still can't use my EBGames card at Gamestop/Babages yet. I hope I can soon.

Maybe the manager was fired or quit so the new manager thought it was best to do it the other way. Normally when places do odd ball things it's because managment has changed.

As for EB and Babbages I think they merged, but only on an investment level. Like a holding company. They may not plan on combing. Just running them as two seperate entities.

Wasn't babbages already affiliated with Funcoland or the other way around?

Dr. Kill
02-06-2006, 01:12 PM
Babages, Funcoland (which is now Gamestop), and Software Etc. (which I'm not even sure is still around. The one turned in to a Gamestop, so they might've scrapped the name Software Etc.) are all the same company.

8IronBob

All the Babbage's, Software Etc..., and Funcolands in my neighborhood all became GameStops, so there's a connection there.

Gatinater

Forgot about software etc I knew they were in gamestop ring. Yeah so baisically the only two real players on the market are Gamestop and Electronics Boutique.

It seemed to originally be collaboration of the three franchises for online sales. But Appearantly the gamestop name is so recognized that they have all adopted the name.

All of my malls use the Gamestop as a bold subtitle. It says Babbages, Funcoland or Software on top and underneath GAMESTOP about 3x times larger.

Who knows maybe online sales were so great that the guy running the online drop ship sales bought all three franchises or they simply adopted the gamestop name and still run independently, but jointly. Giving Gamestop suppliers while Gamestop gives them recognition for walk in trade and gurantees them sales weather online or walk in.

But now with EB the video game market has become monopolized.
