View Full Version : What's your favourite chapter in Max Payne?

Just finished the game, on Christmas day. (Another computer-game-during-a-holidays memory images/icons/smile.gif last year was Swat 3.) Anyway, I loved it. The screenshots and the realistic story grabbed my attention and the demo got me hooked. I loved it from the very beginning -- a gritty spooky subway station in amazingly realistic graphical detail -- it can't get any better ("There was death at Roscoe Station" is one of my fav Max Payne lines). I've always been a big fan of realistic dirty big city plots, so I kinda dug the earliest parts of Max Payne the most. "Live From The Crime Scene" -- the 1940s subway station and the bank vault -- was really cool, as was the Jack Lupino's hotel levels, and the dirty and cold slum parts, where you search for Lupino and chase down Vinnie Gognitti. No part was boring, but the "Cold Steel" levels where a bit too much Black Mesa (complete with female speaker voice saying "evacuate all personnel", etc.) for my taste.

So, what parts did you love the most in MP?

I enjoyed the hotel levels, personally. Lots of things to do and shoot.

i enjoyed all three hotel levels, both tenement building levels, and the garage whew gotta love that garage! the cold steel levels and all the ones that dealt with those military jerks were as you say too black mesa. i didn't like 'em 'cause organized crime doesn't deal with army stuff.

Wow, for once me and sawn_off actually agree on something images/icons/grin.gif The hotel levels and the garage rock, and Cold Steel is quite gay. (But the cylinder that poured the mold into the vat was a beautiful effect, and easy to miss.) It does seem a bit out of place, but then again so do the final two Aesir levels.

I also enjoyed the two Asgard Building levels, mainly because of the wonderful background music and thousands of scum-sucking, crap-licking, baggy-eyed, monkey-faced, fruit-flavored, democratic, bag-of-crap mercs to shoot.

Mine were the subway levels, the rooftop chase with Gognitti, the old stately Asgard building with its formal offices, Ragna Rock, Cold Steel, the restaurant, and the final levels in the Aesir skyscraper. Beautiful, beautiful game.

My favorite levels are the hotels, the garage(for some reason I always use the garage to test mods), and the top of the Aesir building.

I liked the Cold Steel levels. But only the part where you actually get to the labs.

Hmmmmm....Ragna Rock is growing on me the more I play it, but the hotel levels were the best.

I also loved the Manor...that was fun. Lots of guys to shoot, mirrors to break, pictures to blast...etc etc...and there was the great shot when he busts in and says the classic
"He was trying to buy more sand for his hourglass....I wasn't selling any".

Ohhhhhhh baby that was cool images/icons/grin.gif

Cool to hear. I also dug the restaurant (like the subway and tenement levels, it was very "somewhere in the big city") and the manor. The garage was OK too. I was a bit disappointed with the ship part, because I expected to explore a big ship with cabins, engines, passages and stuff, but it just ended abruptly. It was promising during the way down to the engine room, but that was it.

The "Asgar building levels" -- which part is that?

Keep 'em coming images/icons/smile.gif

Part I: Nothing really...but Ragna Rock was nice...

Part II: I just loved the level with getting into the that boat with weapons!

Part III: Backstabbing Bastard is a classic!

The Gognitti chase and the Garage scenes will be up there with "Surface Tension" from Half-Life and falling out of the jet in "No One Lives Forever" as the greatest levels in action gaming history IMO.

The part in which Max witnesses Woden's 'death'. The building itself is like a huge secured library with claustrophobic hallways and those glowing green keypads by every door. God, the lighting in that level was just flat out magnificent!

Has anyon here ever played Hitman Codname 47? The Traditions of the Trade level is easily one of the greatest levels in all of gaming history. Too bad that Hitman was overlooked so much that not a lot of people ever got to play it.

traditions of the trade is ok, but it's over rated. it's fun with the blasting the guy with the shotgun in the dentist office, but then again you DO shoot him in the back.
