View Full Version : Welcome to the 3D Realms vBulletin Software

If you're reading this then you've found the new home of the 3D Realms forums. As you can see, we've switched forum software. For the last two and a half years (since Sep 2003) we've been using Infopop's UBB.Threads software package (and before that, their UBB.Classic software). Infopop's stuff has served us well since we originally started using it in 1998.
However, for various reasons, we have decided to make the switch to Jelsoft's vBulletin software package for the 3D Realms forums. It's a pretty popular software package, so I'm sure several of you are already familiar with it. It offers a lot of features that were previously unavailable to us, both on the end user side, as well as on the administration side. That's what this message is about. To detail some of the new items, changes, and things that are missing.
You will notice that the skin has changed. Along with the software change, a change in "skin" was also implemented. This was part of an overall attempt to streamline the interface. Over the years, a lot of things had been added to the forums which looked nice, but tended to make things cluttered and slowed things down. For example, the individual "bubbles" from the forum posts are now gone, and a more sleeker layout is in place. The old forum code had an awful lot of tables in it, and on computers with lower capabiltiies, this could slow down the display of the forums. The "Forum Images" on the main page of the old forums are gone. Overall, you'll find a much sleeker interface that we had before, and that does't even take into consideration a lot of the Ajax features which are built into vBulletin.
Here's some of the new items for you, the user:
Subforums - This allows me to put forums into logical groups - this further helps streamline the front page.
Quick Reply - Not exactly a new feature, but I did not have it available on our old forums, I've turned it on here, because..
Flat Mode - vB allows me to lock the forums into a flat file mode. When we switched to ubb.threads, I did it because it was MySQL based, not because of the "threaded mode". Since I can lock the forums into flat mode like we used to have, I've done that - since virtually no one used threaded mode, I've done away with it.
Export of Private Messages - You can export your private messages to XML/CSV/Text before deleting them.
Private Message Folders - You can create personal folders in your PM area for messages.
You can now have more than one file attachment to a single message.
There are limits on how much any single user can upload globally for file attachments (although I haven't set this yet).
More advanced message editor. There is a full WYSIWYG option, or there's the old school basic version. There's also a middle of the road version, which is the default.
Enhanced RSS feed generator
Enhanced spoiler tag
New vbCode (formerly UBBCode) - "strike", it lets you strike through text
If you post an image that is too wide for the forum to display, it will be automatically shrunk down to fit - you can click on it to load the full size image in another window.
When a thread/post you make is moved to a new location, you will get a PM telling you that.
Organized default avatars (by groups)
Enhanced forum subscription options
Plus a whole lot more
I'm not going to go into what's new on the Admin side, as you won't see that anyway. :)
A lot of work went into this switch over as we have a lot of users and a lot of posts. Due to this, a few things did not get properly imported from your old user profile. These are the things that are known to have not gotten imported properly:
Your avatar
Your birthday
Your local time zone setting
Not all old ubbcodes got converted properly. Posts on the old board using the old spoiler tag weren't converted. Color in posts were not, etc. The problem is there's not a single piece of text to key off of to do a search and replace to fix them.
Polls. The majority of the polls that were on the old board were not properly converted. If you see a poll that is broken, please use the "report a post", and the poll can be stripped out from the thread.
Due to this, I STRONGLY suggest you go to your user profile (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/usercp.php) right now and set up your account. There's a lot of options there for you to check out, so please spend some time and visit your Control Panel area. While you're in there, you should also examine your private message area. You may find that you have more messages than you were expecting due to oddities in the way the importer handled private messages.
Before the switch was done, a purge of users and messages was done. Any user account that had zero posts and the account created before Jan 1, 2006 was deleted. Likewise with posts. Most forums got pruned - any thread that had not had any activity (aka a new post) in the last 365 days was deleted. This was mostly done to ease the transition. Going forward, I probably will not be pruning as much (if at all).
There are a few things that were in UBB.Threads feature wise that are not here. Here's that list:
Seperate login vs display name - vB has just one name. Because of that, during the import, your display name was the name imported for your new account. If you had a login name and a display name that were different, you will need to use your display name to login from now on.
Name Change queue - there is no facility in this software for you to change your own name
So as you can see, there's a lot to explore and check out. If you have any questions about the software, how to use it, or remarks about this announcement, please visit the vBulletin Help & Assistance (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=38) area here on our forums, where you can discuss the software itself.
Thanks for visiting!

YEAH \o/
I am indeed familiar with vBulletin forums (JCF is the reason why), though i feel sort of ... lost. Its so.. different from the ubb.
Seems Ive lost my avatar with a transparent background, guess in my filtering through and deleting stuff in My Pictures, I deleted the one with the trans. bg. :( Guess Ill fix that tomorrow (Unless Joe feels nice tonight and does it for me :p ) 12:22AM, starting to get tired...

I'm beginning to like the new forums already. Just wish that they'd think about this for the forums a long, long time ago. It's nice to have this type of forum software. I've been around other forums that use this all the time (G4 uses this, even tho I don't care about most of their TV shows, I do visit their forums). I've been on some game development websites that use these as well. I'm glad you decided to make the switch, Joe. It'll be a faster-loading forum, too. UBB was almost a crawl just even getting to post a simple message.

I went to the infopop site and got forwarded to something called Groupee. It didn't even sound like a messageboard system you could install. I figured they canned the product or something.

Their UBB activities have moved here: http://www.ubbcentral.com.
How long is the delay before the forums are marked read? In the old software, I believe the messages were expired in each section right when you visited. So, if you visited General, surfed somewhere else, and came back two minutes later, only actual new messages posted in that two minutes were shown as new. Messages don't seem to be expiring like that. Another thing I liked was that if you didn't visit a section, it would keep those messages as unread until you did visit. I don't often visit DNF, for example, so even messages from a few days ago were shown as unread when I visited.
I hope something approaching this can be implemented in this software. And, I hope the above paragraph is clear.
Joe Siegler
03-23-2006, 12:00 AM
The way it's set now is that you have to read the thread to mark it read.
In other words, if you go into a forum with say 20 new threads, and read just one of them the other 19 remain unread. It's now thread specific, as opposed to forum specific like it used to be before. However, if you don't read a thread at all in 30 days, it'll get marked as read.
You can also hit the "Mark Forums Read" option on the main page (towards the bottom) and it'll mark everything read.
Okay, thanks. It takes me a while to get used to new things, but I'll get there! :)

I also like the new forums.. and I love the fact that there is still a "who's online" function.. many forums don't have that function.
Btw, is there any signal when you get PMs? I thought that blinking letter was a very nice way to show that you have received new PMs.. if that's gone, I'll probably not notice new PMs often.

Nice I like the change. Actually I like this skin better than the old one. So both the skin and the forum software are a nice change. I like the fact that you can download private messages. That means that there is no more reason to keep the inbox constantly full.
I also like the fact that you see ALL the previous posts in the thread you are replying to when replying.

Nice work. I like how it looks and the general use is not much different then the other.
One question though, I have notice that when quoting someone the quote that person has get's deleted. Is that a software glitch or intentional? Because I think that a lot of times it is useful to have the quote in the quote as well because you want to respons to something specific. Although a lot of quotes in quotes is mostly useless I feel. :)

Ok, and may I ask how to go the the first new post? Because clicking the normal thread link doesn't work for me. Is there a new button to press for that?
The little spinning icon on the left of the topic title in the thread listing takes you to your first unread post in that topic.

Strange thing here. For me, that pop-up notification always blinks, even though I don't have any new messages. If I turn off the option, it still shows.
What blinks? The image or the actual pop-up? Can you post a screenshot? You must have some unread PM's somewhere in your inbox.

Will the link from the 3DR Home page point to the new forum? I always visit there first and at the moment it points to the "forum has moved" message - seemed pointless if I'm using the forum link.

I did think about carrying over the forum images. I decided against it. The idea in this skin was to streamline things. The forum images, while nice, really weren't necessary. I still have all these materials, they're not lost, so if I ever come up with a compelling reason to use them again, I will.

There are some scenarios where that stuff gets in the way.
One is with oversized images. Right now if you post a giant image, it gets shrunk down to fit inside the forum layout, so it doesn't blow things up like it used to. If you did that on a quick reply, this functionality isn't there. You'd have to refresh the page to get the image shrink working.

YOU ALL SUCK!!!... I mean, welcome to the new forum, everyone! It's happened at last... good work Joe! I notice some of the old graphical style is here, most notably the animated pic in the top-left-hand corner!
One question: does the : fu : smiley still work, or was it disabled for, y'know, reasons of politeness? ;)
Edit: Simon, I found that problem once -- it seems a load of my PMs were somehow marked unread! However, this was in the test version of this forum, and I only had a few, so it wasn't such a problem...

My issue isn't about unread messages, it's about the fact that the little icon blinks even though the feature is clearly disabled in the options. It always blinks, all the time.

Oh..wait. http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/online.php?&order=desc&sort=time But gotta go back to index to click on it.. Adds to Fav..
There's a Quick Links thing in the navbar at the top of everypage.. that has a link to Who's Online.
I have no unread messages, and the option is turned off in the options.
umm Simon.. you have 189 messages in there and 188 of them are unread. Mark them as read in your UserCP and you'll notice one you have 0 unread then that won't blink.
And what option is turned off? The pop-up notification? This isn't the pop-up notification this is a PM notification.. pop-up is just that.. a pop up.. a box pops up on your screen saying you have a new message.

Everything is turned off. And these messages are READ, trust me.
You read them before on the previous forums.. when you came here they were ALL marked as UNREAD. You need to either manually read them all select all private messages on each page and use the drop-down box and say Mark as Read.
As for "Everything is turned off", that's got nothign to do with that image at all. That image cannot be turned off.. the only way it shows is if you have unread messages.. the fact that your screen says "Unread 188" means.. you have 188 unread messages.

Ilike how you see a post history when you reply, and that "export private messages" option is very awesome too, since I'll never have to do a lot of work anymore when it's almost full. I unsually ended up only saving the most important ones and deleting the rest, but now I can save them all and I hope KJ's inbox won't be completely full as frequently anymore so I lose the message I sent :D.
I also like how people can't change their name anymore, thumbs up :D
I dislike only one thing though, and it's how I haven't found an option yet how to change your date & time formatting, if there is any (it was on the old software at least :()
When it says 03-02-06 1:03 PM, I'm like: "What? February the 3rd one hour after midnight? Ah no, March the 2nd, the month and day is swapped and it's 12 hour system instead of 24" :(
I much more prefer:
02-03-2006, 13:03 :)
What's that tracking of PMs btw?
EDIT: I see you can give a reason why you edited a post
Oh! I wanted to submit this change and I got this:
You have included 6 images in your message. You are limited to using 5 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.
Images include use of smilies, the vB code [img] tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator.
ooooh *insert laughing smiley here*
Yeah I don't think you can change how the date is actually formatted.
PM tracking is if you want a read receipt you can track when they read it or if they haven't read it yet. Similar to the old UBB but it won't PM you the receipt, it'll store them all in the track screen until you delete them off.
Is there a way the old "reply to ADM" text can be added? That really helped when someone was replying to something a few messages back and didn't use a quote.

Good point! And I'll have to get used to "having to click on the nuke instead of the thread title" as well for multi-page threads since it doesn't send you automatically to the page of the first unread post.
EDIT: And I notice how there are 4 times more users on line as usual, is there a plausible explanation for that? Maybe because a lot of them set themselves to invisible and the board didn't import that setting, so they're all visible now until they set it back to invisible, or what?
Is there a way the old "reply to ADM" text can be added? That really helped when someone was replying to something a few messages back and didn't use a quote.
Nope, not as far as I know anyway. It's not threaded anymore as it's flat discussions so people have to get into the habbit of either quoting the post their replying to or just saying something like:
Ras: Reply here.
So adding the nick to the start of their reply.

Am I misunderstanding something? Isn't what you're asking for in this message?
You have to hit the quote button to reply to get it.
He meant the text that would appear next to the post title in the old UBB. It'd have the name of the person you were replying to regardless of if you had their post quoted or not.

About old forums:
The forums still physically exist, they're just disabled. If you knew the proper URL (say it was cached somewhere), you could link to it and it would show up in the WOL, because the software knows it's there, it's just "turned off". So if you link to "Forum 5", and Forum 5 is General Messages, WOL would show that, but the person actually doing the looking would see some sort of error message. They wouldn't see the messages.
"Forum 5" is something made up off the top of my head.

I noticed a disadvantage of subforums, and that's in the right colum, where the thread title is written of the thread that is last replied to, along with who replied.
If someone in the fnord board just replied then in general messages it will show that thread as "last active thread", instead of the last active thread in the normal general messages.
It doesn't bother me that much but I'd still call it a disadvantage.

2 more remarks :):
- It doesn't tell you anymore how many new unread posts there are in a certain thread in the overview of all threads. With the previous software it told you between brackets.
- PMs aren't like a thread, I remember Joe said he was interested in that feature (like on the ubisoft forums, private messaging takes place in thread form, not with individual messages). That's just a remark not a complaint.

Joe or anyone else, is there a feature that can be turned on that will show you who else is in the forum you're in also?
For example, if I'm in the "Popular Media" forum, if I scroll to the bottom of the screen, it will show the other users who are browsing it also?

Something is up with the cache settings on the file that redirects you. Joe, have you considered using a .htaccess redirect rather than the meta tag?

Well, I'd gotten a few messages about it on AIM even after Joe changed the meta tag, so it's somehow still cached on your system (or by your ISP). I got it to work for me when I was checking it out by hammering ctrl+shift+r to force refresh before the redirect happened.

Cool! Good work Joe! :) I was surprised when I came here, didn't know the forums would change this much.

I suspect it's an illusion, we all think it is THAT different because the forum-specific images are gone from the overview.

Do you know what rocks?
In the overview of threads in a forum, there is a special icon to mark the threads you've posted in

2 more remarks :):
- It doesn't tell you anymore how many new unread posts there are in a certain thread in the overview of all threads. With the previous software it told you between brackets.
I'm pretty sure it did not. I had that feature turned off - it's a resource hog.
- PMs aren't like a thread, I remember Joe said he was interested in that feature (like on the ubisoft forums, private messaging takes place in thread form, not with individual messages). That's just a remark not a complaint.
I'm aware of that. Never said it would be here.
Joe or anyone else, is there a feature that can be turned on that will show you who else is in the forum you're in also?
For example, if I'm in the "Popular Media" forum, if I scroll to the bottom of the screen, it will show the other users who are browsing it also?
Yes, it's available. I've got it turned off as it's a resource hog.

Dump your cache. This has been posted about already - IN THIS SAME THREAD.

Nice job reading the announcement at the top of every forum... you know, the one that says imported polls are broken and that you need to set up everything in your profile?

sorry..I didn't have time for that..
you do have time for such matter though(telling me)..it's kind of part of your job apparently..unless that moderator part in your avatar is part of your image ;)
but then ..it would be against the forum rules

What are you talking about? TerminX has been a moderator for as long as I know it (so yes on the previous software already), and if you highlight his moderator status you'll see it's not a part of his avatar, I'm surprised you didn't think of that.
Oh, and I don't think he's employed here. :D (unless you mean part of his "task" instead of "job") :)

Great decision. I use vBulletin for the svencoop.com discussion forums. Very stable, highly manageable, awesome piece of software.
vBulletin is superior in almost every way to UBB... The forum-software wars died a long time ago.
hmm cool but i really like Invisionfree alot better than vbulletin...anyways i'm happy with this board

Invisionfree=IPB v1.3. I'm an IPB customer, but dang, it couldn't compete with VB until IPB v2.

So, tell us Kristian Joensen.
Now the forums use new software, is it still necessary to say: "Second page, first post, please ignore", like you always used to say? :D ;)

Question out of curiosity, how does the birthday system work? Will we see a cake next to someone's nick so we can wish him a happy birthday in the happy birthday thread from the fnord board? :D
No it only shows up on the main forum page or in the Calendar.
There is a template hack to have a birthday cake show up next to someone's name but to be honest it's pointless since it shows up on the main forum page anyway.

And besides, it can be a bit annoying when someone interupts a thread by wishing someone a happy birthday without adding anything on-topic to the thread.

I don't know if this is already known to you other forumers, but I accidently found a pretty nifty feature: If you double click next the the topic title of the thread you created on the overview of threads in a certain forum, you can edit the title :D

Wow didn't know that standard users had that ability for their own threads. I assume it takes into effect the edit time limit.
But anyway yeah it's a really good feature and one that was brought into version 3.5 of vBulletin. It uses a technique called AJAX.. basically quite alot of the mod features revolve around AJAX and it makes everything so much easier as we can moderate within the thread straight out without having to jump back and forth too much.

Also, something I noticed is that when you press ALT+64 you go to the search page instead of outputting an @.
I have a habit of using ALT+64 because ALT GR used to be broken on one of my previous keyboards... and I keep that habit because ALT+64 is much faster for me than ALT GR+@ or CTRL+ALT+@, even if it's more keystrokes.
