If there's a thread like this somewhere else, sorry I didn't really check.

I just watched the 1998 trailer for the first time, and I've seen the 2001. And I know it's been five years since. And I was wondering, have you guys altered the story? Because having 8-9 years of development time I can imagine the temptations to do so.

what is the story?? aliens come try to take over earth.. duke saves the world. Yeh that may be a plot.. but we have never heard of a story so what would it matter if we knew if they did or not because we wouldnt even know what changed or why. The simple fact is they wont release any details of the story old or new so what would really be achieved here? :) he might say 'yeh we have changed it' .. does that excite you? ;)

i think that if tech didnt benefit from this long development time (cause they basically started over from scrach a couple of times) then i hope story and gamepley elements did, cause they didnt have to start that over and the more time they have the more cool ideas come to mind that could be added to the story or gameplay elements...

i dont think that they changed the story radically but just expanded it added new cool ideas an such

Well, I like games to have a little bit more to them than just...You, go kill crap, and save babes. And I know that Duke could have a really good plot if they took the time to make it, and they have time. That's why I respect 3DRealms.

They said they would have a story this time. But there is not much known about it.

We know that the 1998 version had Dr Proton in it...
And we also know that in the 2001 version, the President was captured...

The 1998 version had Bombshell in it, And she was supposed to be some sort of Super assasin against Duke, but later working WITH Duke... And i think it was mentioned that the 2001 had her too... She's probably not in anymore i think...
Now, i don't know if the "kid"napping of the president has something to do with Dr Proton, since we never heard if he'd be in the 2001 version, and the Aliens in 2001 were the same as in Duke3D, while the 1998 enemies were insectoid-like aliens... So in that case, only the thing connecting the story of the 1998 and 2001, was Bombshell being mentioned in the 2001 and 1998 versions story...

//Me waits for Kristian or Firefly to explain it... :o

Yeh same, Im pretty sure George said many years ago they were or already had hired a script/storywriter for DNF, so im sure it will be much more than a simple story... but no idea if they still are going to go with that.

I'd like a simple story. Its a computer game! By the interactivity and what you make happen in the game, thats the story "you know what I did, I blew a whole goddam truck in the air, and then I jumped out a window killing two aliens at the same time." Having people coming up to you and explaining shit is boring. You should feel the story, not get it written on your nose.

A story will be cool but it doesn't have to be deep or very important. IMO that is. :)

Scott Miller has hinted that the storyline for DNF is pretty involved/dramatic. Something along those lines. I'll let Kristian go dig em out. ;)

Yes they have. The story has changed in each version of the game. The '98 version, the '99 version (stretches from 1999 to 2001) and the current version (2002 - present) all have at least slightly different plots.

I remember Brandon (gameplay programmer) saying in 2001 that they were still hammering out the story, and in 2004 George responded to a Shack comment asking if the story had changed much over the years, saying:

"Yeah, a good bit, and it's continually getting tweaked. But the levels you visit have been locked a while. It's pretty easy to make plot alterations and still weave them into existing levels though."

However DNF does have a script, written by Gary Whitta, the PC Gamer columnist who also handled Prey's script.

Here you go:

>>> I've learned to expect nothing of a FPS' story

We feel your pain.

Speaking of which, Max Payne was a step in the right direction, no? Sure there were hokey bits with the dialog, but overall the story made for a more compelling game experience...at least, I hope.

Prey and DNF both strive to take story to a higher level. Half-Life 2, did this too, but their approach was to be stealthy with the story, and leave a lot up to the imagination. This is a valid approach.

Our approach will be more up front with the story, and more revealing. We want our stories to sweep you along, giving you purpose to the action, and making it all seem worth caring about.

In this respect, I think Doom 3 let most players down. And the truth is, it's not easy making a story work in an action game, especially an emotional story. But we have a few tricks up our sleeves... - Scott Miller, June 2nd, 2005.

Any word on when that was though? Not that it means much today, what with the continuous tweaking and all, but I'd like to know when the script last underwent a complete(top to bottom) rewrite.

Yeh something along those lines, this is from the official DNF FAQ at http://www.planetduke.com

2.17 - Will the storyline be an evident part of gameplay?
A short Q&A session with George Broussard in June of 1999 shed some light on this subject. When asked if the game would have either a strong story or simply action and exploration, George replied with a solid, "Yes to everything." He went on to reveal that 3D Realms has hired a scriptwriter to oversee the game's story and, "to help [the DNF team] wrap up and polish plot and script and make sure we have everything in place, as you would expect in a movie."

LOL, when I said a few years, I didnt think it would be 7... time flies.. I dont even care how long DNF takes.. something called a LIFE can deter the waiting :)

My idea for the whole story for DNF, is for it to have a large scope, and feeling of being epic. It should have lots of interesting characters, and places to go. It should be involved, and dramatic, and there should be lots of highs and even some lows along the way. But in the end, it should make you feel like you are a hero, and that you are Duke Nukem.

Heres hoping. :)

I don't think we can just use the official FAQ without asking first, besides, that wouldn't make it "Duke4.net" content...
We wouldn't want to be the EBaumsworld.com of Duke, right..?! ;)

As i understand from Yatta, he'd want us to make our own DNF FAQ (probably adding a little humor, and explain it with our words instead)

Yeah , the story ..
I hate to say it , i could be superb , unique , but i hate that macho bullshit theme that the maine character has , i want to see duke bleeding , suffering , being more human ..
And the choices he has to make would be though , though on him and extremely influential on the story .
I'm not a Half-Life fanboy , but i admire a charachter that i can pitty and feel sorry for , it gives him more of an human touch . I would love to know that the game would have a dark , depressing tone , but it won't . Not save the world in ala Serious Sam , Will Rock and other kind of bullshit characters , yes the games are good , but .. they lack story . Shoot to kill ..
Nonetheless it'll be a great and probablly revolutionary game in gameplay terms , story more or less .
If and when it will come out it'll be a leap forward for all future generation games (not only for the FPS genre) , from what i've seen sofar , Prey will be the next step in FPS terms ..

Oh yeah and one more thing , i hate uberrock music in games , hard-rock , like Painkiller , ok that wasnt that bad , but i'd rather go with something more ambiental .

Oh man, some co-op levels would be excellent.

He can be macho, and can be hurt. See Riddick films.

Don't exaggerate. It may be, but it may just really fun game without some uber future generation revoution.

And in PK I did that. Just turn off all 'battle music'. In PK is really great ambient music. Those big, beautiful territories with ambient music gives you really great feel.

The only problem is, that we want our content to be as true as possible, so we'd probably have to wait for the game has gone gold, or the release...:o
