View Full Version : Shadow Warrior beefs

Uncle Duke

I've only had Shadow Warrior a couple days, and I've got a couple of beefs with the game that I feel like whining about:

1) Lighting. Why the hell is everything so dark? If I wanted it dark, I'd turn the lights off. I want well-lit levels, and I don't care if you get to show off your fancy lighting effects or not. And what's with the flickering lights? It's not that cool, and it doesn't add atmosphere--it's just really distracting.

2) Weapons. They suck, plain and simple. The fists, sword, and shuriken(sp) are neat, but after that, well . . . the riot gun feels like I'm squeezing a constipated turtle, you can't hold nearly enough ammo for your uzis, and then it gets worse. A missle launcher is a 5 weapon? Sure, Duke had RPG as a 5 weapon, but it wasn't quite so destructive, in a broad range. It didn't have nearly so much splash damage. The grenade launcher never hits what I want it to, those damn sticky bombs oughta explode on impact instead of acting like proximity mines, and the rail gun is just so . . . blah.

Then come the neat LOOKING weapons: the Guardian head and the Ripper heart. While squeezing a heart and watching blood spurt out is neat, it should have been an inventory item. And the Guardian head is probably the most useful weapon in the game--if you can keep ammo in it.

3) Enemies. I know you're a ninja fighting ninjas, but, come ON! SEVEN ninjas, mostly just different colors? There's also a guy who looks like he's DXing me, and then turns into a ghost that's more irritating than threatening. Then the guardians look like something out of GI Joe, while rippers are pretty much just these things that run at you and claw until they die. Doesn't this game have any AI at ALL?

Don't get me wrong--overall, Shadow Warrior is a quality game. I just didn't like it as well as most other FPSes I've played, which seriously confuses me: This IS 3D Realms we're talking about.

The level design, although twisty and disorienting sometimes, was truly marvelous. Keith Schuler oughtta do level design for DNF, if he isn't already.

I'm through whining now. Any counter-arguments are welcome, because I'm probably just being ignorant again.

#1=I'd have to agree

#2=The rail gun, rocket launcher, and grenade launcher kick ass (also the the sticky bomb is supposed to act like that.

#3=The AI was awesome for it's time (it's no Unreal AI but it is still cool to watch a ninja commit suicide)

I know the sticky bombs are supposed to be like that. I wish they hadn't been.

The AI was good for it's time? REALLY? Anyone here ever play "Cyclones"? That was the best AI I ever saw until this latest wave of games (i.e. Unreal, Half-Life, SiN). And yeah, the ninja suicide was pretty cool. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

CyClones sucked. Too many damned movies. And shitty guns/graphics. I guess the AI was ok...

Some of the ninjas can DUCK to avoid your attacks. That's not entirely bad for enemy AI IMO. But I do agree that the weapon concepts on the whole could have used a little more ingenuity. Where the weapons are good, they don't really fit the concept of a game that's supposed to be about martial arts and the mysterious East; and where they do, they're not good weapons(cf. the katana, fists and shurikens). *I* would have given Lo Wang, say, a magical Chinese fan that throws out a fierce wind, to blow your enemies into the sky so they drop to their deaths, or dash them against the nearest wall so they go splat. Speaking of which, what weapon would you like to give Lo Wang, Uncle Duke?

hey uncleduke, just wondering, are you using the alternate fire modes on the weapons? this is where the wepons start getting good, the first mode is often too wimpy. The alt fire on the riot gun makes a quad-shot and its really powerful up close. Also the missile launcher has heat seekers and a NUKE. The guardian head is at it best at alt fire 2, the flame rings. sticky bombs are awesome and i wish more games would make items like this where you you can lay down an ambush without actually being there. the sticky boms are WAY more versatile than duke's laser trip bombs. you can place the stickies almost any where you can think of, one of my favorites is the celeing right above a door in multiplayer.

ps: if you knew about everything i just said, then kindly disregard this post http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I've never heard of CyClones (and unfortunatly I will never play it). It this the life of a mac gamer we lack descent games, we do, fortunatly have Duke Nukem 3d, Shadow Warrior, and Unreal. A couple more good games on the way but still alas we don't have the outspoken kickass games.

If you want to help fellow gamers show your support for us at www.games4mac.com we need your help

Not sure what sort of weapon I would give Lo Wang . . . maybe some nunchucks? A giant bamboo stick? A frisbee-of-death sort of thing that returns to you?

Cyclones was NOT a *good* game. I was just saying that, since it was 1994, and the demo didnt' have movies or anything--well, in 1994, an enemy that had enough sense to hide when he was hurt bad was pretty cool.

Since I own and love this game, I guess I should make a comment. I think Shadow Warrior wasn't supposed to be seriously modeled after a real Chinese man on a real quest, but rather to mock those low grade martial arts films that were always made. That allows the game for a better variety of weapons, and it also (IMO) makes the game more fun.

It was Japanese, not Chinese. Also it's not supposed to be a hardcore ninja game, but more of a modern assasin out for revenge who knows a little bit of ninja moves and secrets.

It's half Chinese and half Japanese, with Tibetan and Southeast Asian elements thrown in. It's just an East Asian hodge-podge. The name 'Lo Wang' just doesn't sound Japanese, though. I am Chinese-literate, so I know what I'm talking about. Guess Lo Wang's father is Chinese and his mother's Japanese. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

No, Lo Wang sure doesn't sound Japanese (I spent several years there), and neither does Zilla. So I figure they're Chinese or Korean, operating in Japan (much of the writing in the scenes is readable Japanese). That seems to work for me, until somebody tells me that neither Lo Wang nor Zilla could possibly be Korean, either.

By the way, whoever said they liked the level design, I agree completely. SW levels, especially the urban scenes, are wonderfully atmospheric (although they are a little dark. And the grenade launcher? My favorite weapon. Nothing like it for clearing out whatever's around the next corner, out of sight!
