I've only had Shadow Warrior a couple days, and I've got a couple of beefs with the game that I feel like whining about:
1) Lighting. Why the hell is everything so dark? If I wanted it dark, I'd turn the lights off. I want well-lit levels, and I don't care if you get to show off your fancy lighting effects or not. And what's with the flickering lights? It's not that cool, and it doesn't add atmosphere--it's just really distracting.
2) Weapons. They suck, plain and simple. The fists, sword, and shuriken(sp) are neat, but after that, well . . . the riot gun feels like I'm squeezing a constipated turtle, you can't hold nearly enough ammo for your uzis, and then it gets worse. A missle launcher is a 5 weapon? Sure, Duke had RPG as a 5 weapon, but it wasn't quite so destructive, in a broad range. It didn't have nearly so much splash damage. The grenade launcher never hits what I want it to, those damn sticky bombs oughta explode on impact instead of acting like proximity mines, and the rail gun is just so . . . blah.
Then come the neat LOOKING weapons: the Guardian head and the Ripper heart. While squeezing a heart and watching blood spurt out is neat, it should have been an inventory item. And the Guardian head is probably the most useful weapon in the game--if you can keep ammo in it.
3) Enemies. I know you're a ninja fighting ninjas, but, come ON! SEVEN ninjas, mostly just different colors? There's also a guy who looks like he's DXing me, and then turns into a ghost that's more irritating than threatening. Then the guardians look like something out of GI Joe, while rippers are pretty much just these things that run at you and claw until they die. Doesn't this game have any AI at ALL?
Don't get me wrong--overall, Shadow Warrior is a quality game. I just didn't like it as well as most other FPSes I've played, which seriously confuses me: This IS 3D Realms we're talking about.
The level design, although twisty and disorienting sometimes, was truly marvelous. Keith Schuler oughtta do level design for DNF, if he isn't already.
I'm through whining now. Any counter-arguments are welcome, because I'm probably just being ignorant again.
