View Full Version : Shadow Warrior 3dfx patch

I just picked up the game from the bargin bin yesterday and have since been having trouble with the 3DFX patch. I got the right patch and have followed every direction. The troubleshooting section also failed to help me.
The game crashes no matter how I load it, no matter what I do - it simply refuses to function, giving me a large DOS error message filled with a bunch of numbers and variables.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Do you have the Glide drivers loaded? It won't work without them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "loaded", but the drivers names in the help file are indeed in my Windows directory.

Take a look at your Autoexec.bat file. You should see something like this in there:
SET SST_SCREENREFRESH=60
SET SST_RGAMMA=1.70
SET SST_GGAMMA=1.70
SET SST_BGAMMA=1.70
SET SST_GRXCLK=57
If you don't see this, look for a call from Autoexec.bat to a batch file in C:\Windows. The latest 3DFX reference drivers hide this information there.
If you don't see either of these, go to the Display icon in Control Panel, bring up the 3DFX Settings page, and hit the "Apply to DOS" button(s) (I think there's more than one if you're using the latest 3DFX reference drivers). Reboot (or rerun Autoexec.bat) to make the changes take effect.
If you don't have a 3DFX Settings page, you'll have to reinstall your drivers, or download and install newer ones. I know the Diamond Monster 3D and 3DFX reference drivers set this up properly. The 3DFX Voodoo drivers that ship with Win98 don't.

Thanks for the help. Scotty hit the nail on the head, although it seems that no matter what I do, I occasionally have to renable the "Apply to DOS" setting or the game will crash again. At least it works though.

You're welcome http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif I'm not sure about why you're crashing, though. Try typing SET in a DOS window to make sure Windows didn't lose your variables (I've seen this happen with the BLASTER variable once in a while) If that's OK, try locking your controls (if they're not locked already) and hitting the "Defaults" button on the 3DFX page. Windows games may be altering the card's current settings and causing a conflict with the settings SW is expecting from reading the variables.
