REDMOND, Wash. — April 6, 2006 — Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) today announced it has purchased U.K.-based Lionhead Studios, one of the world’s leading and most innovative video game developers and creators of “Fable®,” the hit Xbox® and Windows® franchise.

Lionhead Studios will immediately begin creating content exclusively for the Xbox 360™ and Microsoft® Windows platforms. The companies previously worked together on the popular role-playing games “Fable” for Xbox and “Fable: The Lost Chapters” for Xbox and Windows, which have collectively surpassed the 2 million global unit sales milestone, making “Fable” the best-selling role-playing franchise on the Xbox platform. “Fable” and “Fable: The Lost Chapters” enable players to make decisions that affect their character’s skills, appearances and morality and the world around them.

“At Microsoft Game Studios we have worked hard to become the best partner for the best creative talent in our industry, and this acquisition underscores our commitment to excellence,” said Shane Kim, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios. “Peter Molyneux is one of the few true visionaries in our industry, and his joining us is incredibly important to the future of both interactive entertainment and MGS. Lionhead is a shining example of the innovative and creative talent that has delivered some of the most influential and unique games experiences to date, and I am honored to welcome Peter and the incredible people at Lionhead Studios.”

“We could not be more excited about being part of MGS. They have long supported our creative vision, and this teamwork resulted in the hugely successful ‘Fable’ franchise,” said Molyneux, managing director of Lionhead Studios. “This acquisition gives Lionhead the stability and opportunity to focus on creating world-class next-generation titles. We are joining some of the most incredible game creators in the industry, the combined talent of which will truly take next-generation gaming to a new level.”
With today’s announcement, Lionhead Studios becomes the latest member of MGS, joining such prestigious and globally recognized game creators as Bungie Studios, Ensemble Studios, FASA Studio and Rare Ltd. on a team whose charter is to create exclusive entertainment experiences that differentiate Xbox 360 and Windows from other gaming platforms.

I knew this would happen. Personally I don't really see it as a bad thing.

If MS didn't buy Lionhead, they were going out of business. The Movies and B&W2 flopped badly.

Yeah - they laid off 50 people - about one fifth of the workforce, and severely cut back upcoming projects.

I believe that MS has pretty much left Rare to their own devices, and think they'll do the same with Lionhead. I wonder what Peter Molyneux will be able to do with the near unlimited MS resources backing him up. This could be interesting...

Sounds good to me. He's throwing money around for charities, so I see this as no different, if this is the case. :)

Better than going bankrupt. Lionhead should give up doing shitty godhood games. They overused the idea long enough.

Well now theyll be doing even higher budgeted God games that will be exclusive to the Xbox 360, and still flop. Hahah

It's good for Lionhead. Because their games are deemed "too complex" or are "misunderstood" by the majority of the gamers out there.

It's also good that Microsoft still intends to have Lionhead publish for the Windows PC. This isn't as bad as it could be.

But any idea of them developing for other platforms simply...Went out the Window(s)

What a way to end this post on a crappy joke.

MS can't ignore PC gaming. That's what really drives hardware sales, new PCs and consequently their latest software. They know where their revenues come from.

Microsoft is quite a reasonable publisher, and obviously this move was made out of necessity, so I don't see the problem.

Well, it's not like Lionhead has really put out anything that great in a while. B&W, Fable, The Movies, and B&W2 were all decent games (IMHO) but certainly nothing great.

But atleast they won't be going bankrupt. I wonder if Molenyeux is going to split again and form a new studio like he did after EA bought Bullfrog.

Better question, after Lionhead's dismal performance, is Molyneux's reputation still strong enough to build a new company on? I can see him sticking with Lionhead for the time being and using Microsoft's funds to rebuild his "cred", and then bailing and doing his own thing.

The reason Lionhead failed was because Molyneux wasn't working on games as much as he wanted. He ended up running the company and not spending enough time on the development of games. That's why they downsized awhile ago, it was getting too much for him.

I just tried the B&W2 demo only recently, and it seemed like a great game. I was waiting until they finished the expansion and bundled them, but does anyone know if its still going to be released now?

As for the movies....I didn't see much point in the demo, but thats because they didn't include the best feature: making the movies! O_o Someone should teach this company how to make demos that actually sell the product.

B&W2 was great as a city building game. The war side of things was a huge let down, but I'd reccomend it to anyone, plenty of fun to be had.
I think the expansion will still get released, it's not far off.

For me, Populous 2 is enough to do the job. But there's a whole new generation of gamers that might need some more convincing. Seriously, someone should tap Molyneux's brain, take what's inside and turn it into a game. He hasn't succeeded in that lately :( But a unique visionary, he is.

Unfortunately, "unique vision" doesn't always equal "good game".

B&W2 was one of the most fun games I've ever played for like, the first 4 levels. Then suddenly, completely out of the blue, it turned boring, repetitive, pointless and..boring. It was comparible to getting off with a really hot girl, her taking you back to her place, tearing of her clothes, and finding out ''that ain't no lady!''.

Needless to say I dislike B&W2 with a passion now. The Movies similar in that it was brilliant to start off with, not as great lasting, but certanly not as dissapointing as B&W2. The Movies was great as a managment game, it's just the movie making aspect was too limited. Something I don't think they could of avoided anyway though tbh.

Sounds exactly like the first game. Except the first one was only fun for the first two levels.

Yeah, the thing that ruined both B&Ws was that they ended up giving you too much direction in a way. The 2 advisors popping up every 2 seconds pissed me off, and the tutorial, oh god how did they let that happen twice!?

Yeah, with Bill Gate$' salary, he could easily buy out anybody and everybody on the planet. Why can't your M$ and EAs of the world understand that little guy competition can be a good thing? Well, in this case, since Lionhead was a dying company, that was an exception, but yeesh, come on...

Bill Gates may be worth a lot, but that doesn't mean he has all that money sitting in a room somewhere. Now Paul Allen, I could see him buying the world. :)

John

He doesnt have all of the money sitting in a room somewhere, he has it sitting in a bank somewhere circulating and building up on interest while Windows continues to be the world's operating system.
