I discovered I like action/adventure a lot. Not really for the action, but for the platforming :D The action is just a nice element that adds to the variation, because platforming would get repititive if it there wasn't any action and no puzzles in the game.
I know the name of the action/adventure genre is poorly chosen, altough if you look at the definition the character goes through an "adventure" most of the time. It just doesn't have much to do with adventure games like The Longest Journey.

I think the name "action/platforming" would be better, but nothing I can do about it :)

So in this thread we can discuss them and recommend each other games.
For me, I like platforming but the game needs to have action in it too (preferably also boss fights, whether they're puzzle bosses or not) and if the game has some puzzles it's perfect.
I do not like the action in games where you don't have to do anything to aim though, like the new Tomb Raider, but I'll enjoy that game anyway because the platforming is so good. The action is just a bit of a filler when the platforming gets boring for me :)
I would also be interested in playing a first person action/adventure game. the Ones I've played are all third person. I don't even know if a first person action/adventure game exists.

Excluding those I forgot to mention, here is the list of action/adventure games I'm aware of, or have played:

- Prince of Persia 3D/Sands of Time/Warrior Within/The Two Thrones: This is the perfect example of how Action/Adventure should be, all four of these games are awesome in their own way. It has a lot of platforming, with a lot of moves (Prince of Persia 3D doesn't have a lot of moves, but the traps and puzzles make up for it). You have to avoid traps, sole a puzzle now and then. And there is fighting as well, with swords. On top of the Prince's own moves, you can also use some items from the environment, like poles and bars.

- Tomb Raider: I don't like the combat system, your guns aim automatically, but it's still a nice filler between or during the platforming. The old Tomb Raider games don't have much moves with the environment, except the standard things like ledges and ladders. But the newer the game is in the series, the more moves :)
I haven't played any full game yet, but will do so.

- Heavy Metal: FAKK 2: The combat is terrible altough the two-hand system is nice, those insects kill the whole game, but the platforming is AMAZING. Lots of environmental objects you can use.
I don't know if I'll get the full game.

- Alice.
I don't know anything about it, but Ras recommended it :D

PLATFORMER. Say platformer in place of adventure.....or you upset us adventure genre fans. ;) Adventure would be games like TLJ.

Enclave is a good choice for the genre you describe. Not a ton of puzzling, but it does have a bit of a platform feel to it.
First person platform-adventure? Well, the Half-Life series fits that description on occasion.

I never really cared for these 3rd person action platformer thingy whatever games for quite a long time. In fact the only third person game I'd really played at the time was Hitman. But then I got Bloodrayne out of a bargin bin about 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. The Tomb Raider Legend demo was really fun aswell, I'll probably end up buying that. I did try out a PoP demo, but I just found it kind of boring really.

I consider adventure any type of game that includes exploration and puzzle solving. Doesn't matter which perspective you assume.

To be off-topic, I do not see why the games we today call "adventure games" should be called as such. In most games we partake in an adventure, but that doesn't necessarily make most games "adventure games". I think it would be more fitting if they were called something along the lines of "puzzle games".

There are no true adventure games today actually. That genre (technically and realistically) has died out for no reason at all. Do you see any Grim Fandango's or Monkey Islands (good ONES) coming out? Or games that even compare to them? At all? I had high hopes for Psychonauts but it wasnt what I wanted really...THAT was a freaking platformer/jumping game. (A true adventure game is one where you aren't afraid of DYING or losing the game, but you're trying your hardest to continue anyways. It wasnt a bout the "action", but rather the style and the cinematics of the gameplay itself. The stories, etc....those were the "great adventure" parts of it.)

Now as for platformers, games like Mario 64 and Pandomonium for PS1 are great. Beyond Good & Evil is probably one of the best modern "adventurish" games, but it also has puzzle/platformer aspects.

Outcast sucked, it really did.

Anyway, have a look at Psychonauts and the Zelda series.

Zelda is (In my opinion, naturally) the cream of the crop when it comes to action/adventure games. Ocarina of time, while dated, had some amazing puzzles, layout and execution, and Wind Waker followed up with a fantastic graphical style (Even if it's not everyones cup of tea). They're really worth buying a Gamecube for if you don't have one already.

Psychonauts did really badly on the market (Because the general public seems to hate creativity, the bastards), but is a really excellent, fun and creative game. Definetly give it a look.

Good or not, there ARE new adventure games in the truest sense of the word. Let me name a few for you to watch this year:

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey 2
Keepsake
Bone Episode 2
The Secrets of Da Vinci
Al Emmo
Broken Sword: Angel of Death
Agon
Barrow Hill
Scratches
