View Full Version : eDuke32 Music Patch

eDuke32 music patch is a mod of eduke adding MP3 and OGG support. It works with the shareware and full commercial versions of duke grp files as well as with the HRP and Gore pack. I understand future eDuke32 versions will incorporate this feature with an upgraded sound engine. Until that time comes, you can try this patch. For instructions and download head over to:
http://edukemusicpatch.cjb.net/
Have fun and let me know if you find any bugs.

Thank you for your interest in EDuke32 and for your work in bringing people ogg/mp3 support until JFAud is finished. http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

So is this legal because it links to the fmod .dll rather than incorporating it into the source? Either way, it seems to work great, though I haven't tried anything fancier than using McWayne's oggs yet.

Great work. this will help alot for TC and MODs till Eduke32 incorporates JFAud when its ready :)

Indeed, that’s great!
It works and sounds good, but somehow I cannot make mp3 files play with default names without defining them in "music.txt". Ogg with same name works fine. I used fmod 3.7.3.0.
But that make no big difference, since it is pretty easy to define them, so thanks very much!

Hmm... thanks for catching that. It's fixed now. Like you did, it's a good idea to use one of the music file assigning methods (renaming files same as midi counterparts or using "music.txt"), but not both. In other words, even if eduke32mp.exe handles empty "ext" values fine, it's best to fill it up with the appropriate music filename.
Piterplus
04-11-2006, 06:01 AM
Hm.., now opposite thing happens - mp3 files playing ONLY if they renamed by default. Any differently named song defined in music.txt not playing at all. :)
BTW, Where is PeteB with his almost finished remake of Duke's music?
Pete, what do you think about releasing at least some part of your music pack?

Works fine on my end. I'll update the executable one more time just to be sure.
EDIT: Try downloading again.

Here´s a link to latest fmod.dll v3.75 (zipfile just contains dll, no installer):

Congrats, compatible48x. You filled an important gap in the HRP project. I have added your site to my "Links" section. Hopefully, this inspires music artists over here to give us something to play (with)...

Let's hope so :) I'll link to your site as well. Thanks to Piterplus and everyone else for taking the time to test the music patch. I'll try to fix any bugs as soon as my time provides.

Btw Nightfright: is that the doomguy(from doom1&2) on your picture?

OK, I have made a first release of what might be called the "eDuke32 Music Pack". It contains the following:
- compatible48x´s eDuke32 music mod (with latest fmod.dll)
- "Stalker" recreation by Pete B
- the rest of the soundtrack recreation done by Mark McWane
Info:
+ The soundtrack is complete, nothing is missing.
+ All music files are OGG Vorbis, most of them have been edited by myself (increased volume, removed pauses etc).
+ "Storm" was slowed down for additional 20 seconds because McWane´s original release was way too fast.
+ Additionally, McWane´s 2005 re-releases have been included (except for "XPlasma"... his first version with choir is better IMHO).
+ Just unzip to your existing eDuke32 installation and use eduke32mp.exe instead of eduke32.exe.
You should have a good connection for this, the file is 95.3 MB (zipfile installer). Here are the links. I will put them up on my site as well, and we need more (i.e. better, faster) mirrors, of course: :)

@Luigi:
It is indeed the Doomguy. I took it from an abandoned (yet promising) project by someone who tried to model a HUD face for jDoom. Unfortunately, one single pic was all he achieved (he lost the rest in a HD crash and didn´t restart the project afterwards... so always backup your work!). Now, my avatar is something like "Doom Nukem 3D" ;)

NightFright, you don't have redistribution rights for the copy of Grabbag from the 3DR site. I just thought I would point that out so you can fix it before uploading a 97 MB file to any more sites. ;)
NightFright
04-11-2006, 12:54 PM
OK, THX for that quick response. I almost wet my pants! ;) Always good to know there´s one around who really knows what´s allowed and what´s not.
I have replaced "Grabbag" with McWane´s version now (it´s not like I had any other choice currently...). Above links have been updated; file size is reduced to 95.3 MB.
You can always get "Grabbag" from 3D Realms´ site, rename it "Grabbag.mp3" and put it in your music folder instead (but remove/rename "Grabbag.ogg" then!).

BTW here is what Mark McWane wrote to me per email today:
"I am planning on beginning the Duke project again within the next 4-6
weeks. Concurrent with that work, I have also been tapped to craft all
new orchestral arrangements for Doom I and II for a forthcoming music
CD (www.DominusAnimae.com). My new Duke Nukem music will involve all
new scoring, and not simply a leveraging of the existing MIDIs, as well
as use of the EWQL Platinum Orchestra, EWQL Symphonic Choirs, Vienna
Sound Library Professional, EWQL Storm Drum and more."
Sounds promising.

I just ripped the music off the Sega Saturn version for my own personal use.
I did the same with my old Total Meltdown Playstation CD.
I did one (hopefully ) final update to the music patch, adding a minor check to the music.txt parsing routines. It wasn't really necessary but I guess better cover all the bases. Any problems let me know.

how did you get the music off the Playstation version. It's not standard CD audio

Recorded it with my computer's sound card.
TerminX

It's possible to get it off of the disc. I still have a few of the tracks I decoded from the XA files on the disc in 1997 or so.

I will see if I can get new music files for DukeDC addon. "Hero" and "The Rain" have or will be recreated by Mark McWane for that purpose. If you have (discovered) any other cool freeware music that you think could fit for DukeDC, post it here!
See attachment for updated music.txt file with Piterplus´s definitions for DukeDC addon. Hopefully, we have something to fill in soon!

It did have some sort of a corruptional stutter. But now it's gone, and I have to admit, it's very f'in cool, this mod. Now I won't have to use the Rancidmeat port just for the music. Thank you. :)

Great addition to the eduke mod. Tried it with Caribbean and Nuclear Winter - works well.
Any chance of doing something similar for Shaddow Warrior?
Thx for the time you put into this - Great to hear Duke with better sounding music.
