View Full Version : "Close Shut the Jaws of Celeron"

Well, my CPU finally fried. Or atleast I think it did because my computer just froze, I restarted and boom nothing... no beep sound, everything was spinning up but no beep or picture. The videocard works, the drives work, everything works but the Celeron smells like smoke.
Death by: Oblivion. I had Oblivion running while I was doing school work. I would switch back and forth. So Oblivion was loading stuff, no biggie, I always ALT-TAB then, but this time it was too much.
The celeron was pushed to it's limit and died. Yay... now I hope I can get a good AMD CPU.
On my brother's computer right now. :)

Yeah, good riddance Intel! Now, if I were you, I'd go with an Opteron fairly quick, or at least an AMD 64 x2 processor, like a 4200+ at very least.
Micki!

I hate celeron, and i hope it'll keep burning in hell... :tinyted:

Bad news, you did away with your Geforce 2 in the past but now we have NOTHING left anymore we can use to make you the laughing stock of these forums :(
Yay... now I hope I can get a good AMD CPU.
I find that oxymoron-ish or inside-joke-ish, one or both, but I'm not sure.
Anyways: The opposit happened to me one time. My AMD Atholon fried (and the one after that...) and I had to get an Intel Celeron.
ZuljinRaynor
04-13-2006, 04:39 PM
Well, either way the Celeron sucks even if it works unlike that Athlon.
I need help though, AMD's CPU works strange. For example, my dad has a Sempron 2400+ which clocks at 1.7Ghz. But SRtest.com tells me that the 1.7Ghz runs like 2.4Ghz. How do the other ones work? Anyone have a site? I see System Requirements always say Pentium # or eqaul. What are the AMD actual performance speeds?
And anyone know where I can find a really cheap FX-60? :D
FireFly
04-13-2006, 04:48 PM
Just use the performance rating - 2400+ = 2.4 GHz, etc. In the case of the Sempron, the rating doesn't equate to an equally clocked Pentium 4, so I would use actual benchmarks.
ZuljinRaynor
04-13-2006, 04:53 PM
How about the 64 series? What would the performance ratings be for those? Would the AMD 64 3800+ 2.40 Ghz mean 3.8 Ghz rating? Would the 64 X2 4800+ be each core is 4.8Ghz or each is 2.4 Ghz? How about the FXs, like 55, 57, or 60?
ZuljinRaynor
04-13-2006, 05:05 PM
I'm looking at some benchmarks and it seems the FX-57 is really, really good, and performs better than the FX-60 in games, but not it other types of programs.

My FX-53 is clocked only at 2.4ghz, and yet I seem to out-perform many intel PCs that are well into the 3ghz or higher. Its kind of annoying, because I have no clue what to think when I read system requirements. I see "Recommended: 3ghz" and think "Yay! I can run it on max". :o

Hey avatar, can you see what www.srtest.com says about your CPU? Maybe printscreen it too. If you can.

I'm thinking should I go with FX-55 or an X2. I'm seeing the 4400+ getting lower benchmark scores than the FX-55 for games but then again I play games and do other stuff at the same time. Should I go with FX or X2?

It just sees "2.4ghz" and assumes thats all it can do. It doesn't claim it is "running equivalent" to anything. Thats why I don't use that website. If you find a program to benchmark and tell me what my CPU is equal to in the Intel sense I'd be happier.

Sandra SI (http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/sandradl_e.html) does CPU benchmarking.

I'm looking at the X2 4400+ but I got a dilema. I read on some forums that some games don't even work with dual core cpus. Should I stick with an X2 or go down to vanilla 64? (FX are too expensive.)
ZuljinRaynor
04-15-2006, 06:32 PM
Well, it seems that the 64 4000+ is what I think I'll get. Seeing how their new sockets are coming and with all the new stuff, I'll stick around the middle. It's alright, as long as it's not an Intel, and as long as it is definitely not an Intel Celeron, I'll be happy.

Couldn't you just set the affinity to just one of the cores whenever you play it(works for System Shock 2)?
Duoae

Just a quick question - but for in future, how do you set the affinity for one core? I would think it would be in the BIOS but i don't remember seeing an option to disable one core.
Thanks.

Task Manager.
If you're talking to me then i don't see any such option in XP task manager...

You should be able to right-click the game's process (in the processes tab, of course) and the resulting menu has the affinity setting.

Right click on a process. You'll see an option called "Affinity..."
EDIT: Woops.. Had this open for a while without reading it..

So ZuljinRaynor, you getting a new motherboard and CPU or a new PC all together?
Phayzon
04-19-2006, 06:44 PM
I think he should get all new stuff (save RAM and HDD, depending on how much he has). Since his GPU is AGP and it wouldnt be wise to get an AGP mobo.
Damien_Azreal
04-19-2006, 06:46 PM
True, he could step up from that x700 to a 6800 or x1900/7900 series.
If he can affourd it.
Phayzon
04-19-2006, 06:53 PM
Or somethere in the middle, X1800/7800, or even X1600/7600 (dont know how good they are though, but the 7300 looks like it sucks compared to a 6800GT)
Boinky
04-20-2006, 03:32 PM
7900 GT is only ~ $330 at Newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143048
Its cheaper then the 7800GTX atm and seems better overall :-P. Also the 6800GT is about $270ish so for $60 your getting a better deal :)

Glad you asked. :)
I'm getting new parts; everything but case, PSU, HDDs and CD/DVD drives.
The new stuff is:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Socket 939 (San Diego) CPU
Asus A8N-SLI nForce4 Ultra, PCIE Socket 939 Motherboard
Ultra 2048MB DDR PC3200 400MHz (2 x 1024MB) Dual-Channel RAM
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card
eVGA GeForce 7900 GT CO 256MB PCIe Video Card
And some fans, one for the back slots and one for a 5.25" bay.
Also rounded IDE cables since I hear that the normal flat ones can block some air flow.

I got the 7900 GT for $320 @ Tigerdirect (before you hates come, I haven't had trouble ever with them so, ;) ).

Well, I couldn't use that X700 in the new computer so I did set up to the 7900 GT. I can't afford it, but my dad can. ;)
Sorry, triple post.

Heh, everyone buying these new graphics cards now are going to be so pissed when DX10 rolls in :D
ZuljinRaynor
04-20-2006, 06:08 PM
Nah, I new DX10 was coming and it won't be replacing DX9 for a while, maybe a year into Vista's launch. So I might be able to get 2 years outta the card.

My old X700 was but my new 7900 GT is a PCIe card.
Aslo the parts should be here on Monday, so UPS says.
They also say that it's at Parsippany, NJ. That's 44 minutes from here! I wouldn't be surprised if it comes early by coming tomorrow, meaning Friday. That'd be sweet.

Ahh, I saw the post with the specs, you will have a pretty decent system it seems, certainly better than mine.
Edit:
As for the DX9 vs DX10 thing, we know that both UE3 and CryEngine 2 will have DX9 renderers.

I knew about AM-2 and DX10 when I got my new rig, im kinda pissed that my new rig wont be around for as long as my old (1 year with a FX5500OC). DX10 isnt much of an obsticle for me, just get a new card. Just to throw this in: I think the X10/GeForce7 will be very short lived. When they started with the #8##(#) they didnt leave much of an up window, just to 9. I think the 7600 should be what the 7800 is. (same with X1800 and X1600)
ZuljinRaynor
04-20-2006, 09:19 PM
Hell, I've still been using DX7 renderers, DX9 is new for me. :p

Well, I have everything connected and stuff, just one problem. I had no clue about 24-pin Mobos so the 20-pin PSU we had was no good. We ordered a 500W one, and a real one from Ultra, not one of the crappy ones that come with most cases.
The thing looks great on the inside. *drool*
Phayzon
04-22-2006, 07:15 PM
A 500w one came with it? Nice. My old rig only had 350w (No biggie for an AGP rig), and my new rig I upgraded from 460w to 650w.

Well, I'm on my new machine. It's nice to be able to play stuff like this. :D
