Sound related problem when playing game - advice welcome to a newbie who's re-discovered this classic 3D game...
tho i can play all my other games with sound effects just fine, regarding the game of 'duke nukem 3D' - which i played just fine many years ago, an now wish i could play again - i cant get it to play proplery :(
as this game wont run if i select any of the soundcard options its setup prog lists.
for when i goto load it, it goes thru various self-checks before starting, but then aborts with the line...
"Soundblaster not responding on selected port"
now its long help file does mention this problem and says to add this line to my autoexec.bat file...
'SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T1'
...an tho i have it makes no difference!
even tho its setup/config file 'does' show that the 'A220 etc' settings were indeed recorded in its config file when i view it with notepad.
note that the game plays fluently tho without sound, but wont load-up if i choose to play it with sound.
a problem might be that i have onboard sound from my asus motherboard audio chip, whereas the setup prog lists soundcards only,
OR
maybe i need to match my onboard sound setup to that listed next to the 'set blaster' command-line in my autoexec file?
BUT
- if thats the case then how do i find out what my onboard sound figures are, ie- DMA, IRQ, port address, card-type number - for i cant type in what i dont know ????
also - when i follow the other game troubleshooting advice from this games help file, ie- deleting the games cfg file, then switching all off for several seconds, then switching back on, an then re-running its setup prog to set the screen to SVGA + audio to sound-blaster compatible - it 'does' load-up properly with sound!
however if your'e playing when suddenly the sound dissapears, it means you have to redo 'all' the above all over again to get it back to normal!
an then theres times when even the above fix dont work!
therefore are motherboard audio-chips damn tempremental compared to sound-card audio chips?
[if so, think i'll have to then dump mine come the next upgrade]
any way - all advice appreciated :)
For i miss my old pal Duke, please help me to get him back with sound :)
