View Full Version : Hmm, this is interesting between NGC and X360

Well, obviously this is something that we already know that NGC and the X360 use the same brands of hardware to power their consoles (PowerPC Processors, and ATI Graphics). However, it just occured to me that I can't seem to determine the difference in clockspeed and/or graphics cards for both consoles. Seeing how MS and Nintendo are rivals, how could they be using the same brands of components?! Then again, those are the brands of components running the older Macs, too, before their switch to Intel... Interesting how Mac hardware's catching on with game consoles...

Totally different design points on the mentioned, btw it is Nintendo Wii. You can read wikipedia entrys on those ati xenos(or guru3d) and you'll get better idea on the issue.

Right, what's the difference in clockspeed between the X360's PowerPC and the GameCube's? On top of that, they both use ATI graphics, but I'm quite sure that the GameCube's not nearly as powerful as the 360's obviously... Not too sure what, if any the Revolution's gonna use, now that you mention it. I know that originally it was gonna be called Wii (pronounced "Wee", which is a bit embarrassing to call it that).
I heard that the technology in the Revolution was gonna be somewhat similar to GameCube, maybe a little more enhanced (even tho the Rev is going to use a slot-loading DVD drive, if I'm not mistaken, the GC used the PSX-style pop-up drive). Also, Nintendo even said that they don't even want to think of directly competing with Sony OR Microsoft this time around, which is unfortunate, but at least Nintendo has the biggest game icons known to man, so they'll sell the Revolution on that alone, I have a hunch...
Seems like there's a lot to think about with this in mind...

The Revolution (I mean Wii) is using ATi GFX and a Broadway CPU.

That's nice that Nintendo's keeping ATI for graphics... I suppose Sony's the only console using nVidia (which MS dumped from the first XBox). Well, that's a big rivalry for ya. Then again, I probably may favor Wii over the other two consoles, even tho I am capable of playing in HDTV (which Wii won't, but hey, Nintendo doesn't really care about that high-end junk), but classic gaming's where it's at, just putting my heart where it belongs.

I'm quite glad that Wii isn't going for Hi-def as i can't afford a new display or see the point of having a hi-def display (all's i ever see is more over-apparent edges and other stuff). I'd be happy with just a normal LCD display with 1024*whatever settings for my Wii games. None of this 640*480 crap. (Actually, thinking about it i'd be happy with 800*600).
[EDIT]
Just to make clear, there's a difference between DVI 1024*xxx and HD 1024....

Well it's not clear that they will support resolutions above 480p (640*480). Even if they did, the game designers would have to budget for them, and who is going to design a game specifically for the limited number of monitor users?

Right, on top of that, most game designers don't really care about widescreen resolutions, either. IMHO, even one who does have a high-def TV probably would prefer a Wii over the other consoles, even tho the other two consoles can handle the HD resolutions. I'm probably making a good idea of getting a Wii over anything else at this point, just because Nintendo needs the support in the home console market (Gamecube sales aren't quite up to the original XBox or PS2, sort of unfortunate, better hope the Wii won't see the same fate).
Back on topic, I would like to think that Wii will probably have some good technological advances over Gamecube, probably with the slot-loading disc drive, the remote control-style game controllers, and downloadable game libraries from the retro NES, SNES, and N64 eras. Gamecube couldn't do all this. However, I see ATI and IBM technologies working for Wii better than Gamecube... Of course, since their's no HD support, the graphics card's probably not going to be as superior as the X360's. However, it's the game icons like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, and Donkey Kong that'll make Wii sell.

Id like to see a new Mario Baseball for Wii. That'd be awesome. This will most likey grab the past SEGA fans too, since in addition to NES, SNES, and N64 downloads, there will also be Genesis/Megadrive and Turbografx

Yep, if you have the HDD space on your Wii, you could do all that. However, if you're short on space, you could recycle a Gamecube disc of the Sonic Collection.

I have a big enough Wii, it'll fit :o :p

Hmm, not too sure how big it'll be. From a preview thread, the Wii was only supposed to be the size of three DVD cases put together, that's not too big, hell, it's gonna be even be smaller than the Gamecube, and I thought the GC was small! The PS2's rather slim itself, wonder what the size of the PS3's gonna be like... Then again, X360's not that much smaller from the original XBox, I guess that thin or compact is not M$'s style...

I think i'll be a little slimmer than the XBox360.
EDIT: Measured my 360; 5 DVD cases (laying down)
