View Full Version : Packaging of the game

Yes, we here in Europe have had to get used to games being packed in DVD cases only, with minimal manuals(sometimes only in .pdf -form). I would like to see DNF, even if it is "collectors edition", in a boxed as Duke Nukem 3D was. It really gives the package some value. They are more then just game boxes, they are items we value :) Shouldn't be impossible, even if it's not usual nowdays. This may be all for nothing, but this is something that has become too much of an standard(packing games only in DVD case). I know it is cheaper in manufacturing and in logistics but still, we pay quite much money for our games(and even more for CE). I really do not even now if 3D Realms can even do something for this or not, or is it all on the publisher(whoever that may be).
What is our opinion on the issue? Are you happy if DNF ships in DVD case only? Or should we have boxed version(even if only CE would be that)?

As someone with minimal room for these things DVD cases are *the* way to go. Personally a boxed copy would mean a CD jewel case, whereas I prefer the DVD case so that I can keep the slipcover for the art value etc, whereas a box would end up in the garbage if space was an issue for me.
For DNF I would just hope for an Oblivion style case with all the fixings. It had more than any boxed game, full manuals and the like.

But you can put the dvd case inside the box :)

This isn't really upto 3D Realms but Take Two, sure 3D Realms has got approval rights on stuff like this, but that is a farcy from actually actively making the decisions.
Plus Take Two(or 3DR for that matter) have to go by what retailers and ultimately the end user will accept.
The question is is the end user willing to pay extra for stuff like this ?
Edit:
Personaly I really like the DVD cases(and the DVD's in them).

Ah, but name a game that has ever done that. When they choose boxes they choose jewel cases. ;) I've yet to see a box with a full size DVD case inside.
Also, this is just me, but boxes indicate paper sleeves these days. I'll kill my own grandmother if DNF comes in a paper sleeve (you hear that 3DR??? I"ll DO IT!!!!)

DNF deserves original kickass packaging.
I say a regular DVD style case for the regular edition. But the Collector's Edition (I know ther'll be one :p ) deserves somethign more. Something as original as Max Payne 2's box, that is still my fav game box ever.

I like Oblivion's CE case better, its very similar to the LOTR case. Unfortunately for my Canadian version they made room for the french books....meaning if I don't put them in there then a big space is left.
GTA:SA is a good case too, the book + the fuzzy nub on the back for the disc. I always use a DVD crack though, because I'm worried that nub might wear down if I kept removing the disc.

Personaly i like the special packagings too! Like Max Payne 2 for example. Or the games that we could buy in local stores in the past. With the big boxes, and sometimes even some special item or something. Decent manuals, good quality packagings, etc. Thats what i like as a finishing touch to games!
What i dont like is packagings that i feel like i could have made myself, or even could have made it better myself. The Battlefield 2 packagin for example. That is what i call worthless. The only thing that packaging has too say to customers is "hey, look at this oversized 2!!". Then on the backside it oly has some awefull screenshots, and an even more awfull edited language (Dutch). It IS Dutch, but it is Dutch from the time that pirates and young horny unwashed maidens still excisted here in this place.
And as a finishing touch EA added a manual with like 10 pages of paper. And even in there half of the manual is filled with commercial crap from Logitech and friends. It does smell good though, the new and freshly printed paper!
Advice for 3D Realms an companions: make it worthy to touch, worthy to read, make it look like it is something special. Take the above example as a good advice as how it does not must be done ;) :)

I'd prefer it not be in a DVD case. My computer desk has a built in rack for CD jewel cases, and I have a couple of CD racks on the top, but I don't have anywhere to put a DVD case. And personally, I just throw boxes out. Paper manuals (if there are any) get dumped on my bookshelf.

I don't mind if it's in a DVD case, so long as it's not like the Age Of Empires III case....I hate that case so much, it's like a fat DVD case and they just pile the CDs on top of each other and it's a pain to get out.

I find that cardboard boxes have bad wear and tear if you're not careful, so I'd prefer a san andreas/ dvd box dealie.

i would enjoy the dvd case with the book inside and one dvd (not five cd's) for the game. i think we can all agree that paper sleeves are the most annoying holding device in the world. paper boxes look nice when your lookinat teh game in the store, but once your home they waste space, and i dont throw them away for some reson, so i have a pile beside my computer.

It will most likely come on a DVD because the game is so big. :)
But it is a bit to early to discuss that isn't it. ;)
I like cardboard boxes. Big ones.
(Just say NO to rainforests).
My mother re-cycles them to wrap her hand knitted christmas gifts.

Max Payne 2 had awesome packaging, something in lines of Prey LCE / Oblivion CE / Max Payne 2. At least for the "Collectors Edition". Even if 3D Realms doesn't decide or have the final say in this matter, they had games like Max Payne 2 come out in a quite different case what've been used to.

This is not about the format of the disc, but solely on the outer packaging.

A rusty small nuclear waste barrel..that'd be cool. With green glowing in the dark stuff..
Or a radioactive symbol box. The DVD could be in the center circle and the booklets in the other parts of that symbol.

Dude that rocks. :)
I'd like something metallic. Perhaps a metallic case ala "Prey" but then have a hologram on it of the Duke.

A metalic square box, which looks like some waste container with a Nuke symbol on it...
It shouldn't look dirty, like people would expect from radioactive waste containers though...
Or maybe some kind of Las Vegas styled box... Of course with a Nuke logo on it... Maybe a Casino with the Nuke logo on it, and a Pic of Duke in front of it... :o

I hate HATE when games come in double sized DVD cases when they could easily come in normal DVD cases or even jewel cases. Why can't all games just come in CD jewel cases like they used too instead of suck ass DVD cases and paper sleeves?

I would like to see the game come in a thin aluminum case that's the shape of the atomic/radioactive symbol. The only problem is that I would have to keep it inside a glass covered box, so I can punch it incase I need to save the world or somthing.

I'm just wondering, why do people keep asking about the package? I mean... by the time DNF is released, there may be no DVD (or whatever) distribution... who knows... :)

I think blue-ray will still be way to expensive around the timw DNF comes out.
I dont care what box it comes in, just as long as these's a big poster of duke inside.

There is no need of blu-ray. No way the game will be that big. Not to mention that people still using cd-roms. I don't think there'll be PC games on blu-ray in 1-2 years. Or hd-dvd.

Well, who knows. As far as I understand the PS3 will use blue-ray. But then again those games have insane graphics. PC's have some catch-up time.

Well of course, but the PS3 will be out before they do. And that's the PC's advantage, it keeps advancing while the consoles lag behind. Just look at when Half Life 2 came out, it was the PS2 and XBox and GameCube, no competition in comparison. Now the XBox 360 and PS3 are beating the PC, then in probably a year or less the PC will be ahead again. It's an endless cycle.

I doubt it'll take a year for PC's to catch up. Just look at games like UT2K4 and Crysis, both scheduled to be out late this year.
I say six months, maybe a few more, PC's will be ahead of the 360.

First, I think you mean UT2K7 :D
Second, I wasn't talking about the 360, the PC is already ahead of the 360. I was talking about the PS3. Watch the MGS4 gameplay trailer, that will take a while to catch up with.

WE actually have had such a thread before...
I think it was RedSplant (who was back then called IceT) who made a really awesome box... (black tin bow, with Nuke logo on it)
Or maybe it was Tony, or Docded... All these guys can make awesome photoshop stuff, but it might aswell have been someone else...
Someone should post it if they have it... :D
[EDIT:]
Googled it, and found the name of one of our old threads, with the same topic:
"Picture of actual DNF retail box "
Here's one of the awesome designs... It's not the tin-box i mentioned though...
