so, ive been playing alot of FPS's recently and it has come to my attention that most if not all of them no longer have the handy top viwe map that tells you were your going like in duke 3d and shadow warrior, i was wondring if this was going to make a comeback or not?

Thats because most FPS games these days are pretty linear and straightforward. There hasn't really been a need for a map in years.

Exactly. Plus, now a days maps have multiple leveled areas which just make maps confuzing...it was confuzing in Duke at times.

Well, maybe a 3D map which you can turn around. ;)

Postal 2 had a map, but that was because it was completely logical to get a map of the town you're in for the entire duration of the game.
I'm not sure DNF would need a map unless the same areas keep recurring, (wich I doubt) or if areas you DO visit are confusing in layout. (wich I also doubt)
As far as 3D maps go, the only succesful implementation of a 3D map I've ever seen in a game was in the Descent series... but that was sort of nessecary since most of the time you spend in underground tunnel systems.
IMO The next Duke doesn't need a map, but who knows.

A map would give you a sense of the game being inside a box and not in an actual world. It gives you a certain perimeter and gives the virtual world defined edges. That’s not a good thing, unless you give the player an uninteractible map.
I never used the map in either Duke 3d or Shadow Warrior. Maybe i should have- in some levels i searched hours for one damn key.

If any, i'd like a 3D map ala Metroid Prime 1-2 (which was REALLY easy to use imo, and looked quite logical, and good)
or something like Resident Evil 4's map... Those are the best i remember...
But i seriously doubt that would be necessary though... I wouldn't mind having a map though... :o

They should make maps like that for Prey - that would certainly be interesting :D

Ahum, yeah I forgot, that was a very good implementation of a 3D map system too, maybe even moreso then Descent...
still I don't think DNF will NEED a mapping system at all.

Yes, me neither... But if any, then i'd want something like what i just described...
That was easy, effective, and rather good looking...

Well, it wouldn't be required of course. But it would be interesting to see I guess. :)

if duke had a whole bunch of different paths to get to places it could get a bit confusing especially if your running around in the sewers or office buildings where everything looks the same, but who knows. i hope DNF isnt that linar, i enjoy exploring.

I've used Tab-Map quite a lot in early Doom games. Everyone knows how mazy Doom 1-2 could get!

They could have maps for certain areas with multiple routes - say if Duke is travelling through the grand canyon on donkeyback, he might also happen to take a map of the area from an abandonned tourist shop. Could be an innovative idea that leads to lots of exploring in a large area.

Yes, a 3D wire frame map would be fine.
Yep, a different style map (city map, or a building blueprint, roadmap, tourist map, plane-photo) for each level would be interesting too.
Tough call.

Since they are pushing interactivity, I'd imagine normal realistic style maps, like that grand canyon tourist map Deli mentioned. Not for all the levels, but for the wide, spread out, multiple path areas, like Vegas and wilderness areas.

I doubt it guys, really. Part of the reason that maps are no longer in games is partially because of level design. (Aforementioned linearity.), but also because it has to load everything into memory, then draw what you can 'see' and what you cannot see. It basically requires a lot of extra features which personally, go against Dukes personality. Hes a man, men don't need no freakin' maps! Lol. Unless his shades can draw him a 3D graph map.

Yes, both Descent 2 and Descent 3 had 3D automaps, although D3's was slightly more sophisticated as it showed basic meshes instead of the wireframes
