What exactly is SETI@home? How do I get involved? What kind of commitment of time/resources is involved?

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ will tell you all you need to know (and more).

You commitment/time is minimal. It's the computers time which is used. It takes all spare CPU cycles.
I've been running it consistently without any problems on several computers.

Do I have to be connected to the internet 24-7? I only have one phone line, that's what I'm trying to say.
BTW, I have a p-166 MMX. Is that good or bad?

No, you don't need to be connected 24-7. It can be set up to connect automatically if you are, but if not SETI@Home will ask you to dial up when you run out of work. As the SETI page says, even a laptop that's only connected to the internet occasionally can run it.
The P166 isn't so good, but you're better off than I am with my P150! http://www.dopefish.com/ubb/frown.gif
