View Full Version : Maps for testing

I am in need of one or more maps to be used for checking on monster and weapon behavior in my mod. Mainly, I have been using map 1 of DC, but frankly I'm getting sick of looking at the White House lawn.

Ideally, the map should be split into several different arena areas, each featuring different monsters. In particular, I am interested in a map that has all of the bosses, with each in an area that resembles the arena where the boss appears in the original maps (it is especially important that the ceiling be the right height, for reasons I won't go into). I want to be able to walk into a room and have the monsters I want without having to type spawn this and spawn that.

Some of you may already have maps like this or know where I could find them. I realize that what I am describing would be very easy to make for a mapper, but I am not a mapper and know NOTHING about making maps, and I just don't have time to learn right now. So, if anyone could give me a link to any maps that might be suitable, or even just point me in the right direction, I would be very appreciative. Come to think of it, this probably isn't the best forum to be posting this thread, but I'll start here anyway.

Man, coding is 1000x times harder than mapping, you can make a room with exactly 4 spacebar clicks, it's not a big science, if you need to make maps for testing just play around with mapster32 and you'll be making maps in no time (by no time i mean less than 5 minutes)

Spoken like a true mapper.

But here's what frustrates me. I want to fight the Alien Queen in her natural environment (so I have some idea of what I should do with a modified version). I go to the level she's on, I run around in God mode with all the keys and NO CLIPPING for ten minutes and I can't even find the bitch's room. I haven't played most of these maps since 1997 and I don't remember them well enough to just go where I need to go.

If you look on your duke cd, you'll find a map called zoo.map that might fit your needs. It has all weapons and enemies, and a fairly open middle area with water in the middle.

I don't remember the queen being in that map, but anyway...DeeperThought if you NOCLIP straight forward thorugh the violet lava you'll get to her.

Good suggestion, Usurper, but I decided there was no substitute for seeing the bosses in their natural habitats.

I had forgotten that the Alien Queen battle is all underwater. Now I have to nix one of the ideas I had for her. I've never been a big fan of underwater stuff in first person shooters. Maybe I'll make Duke a scuba gear upgrade to make it a little more tolerable.

I'm not sure she has to be underwater - I played through a usermap that had the queen in a big room, out of the water. She played just fine there. I think that perhaps the original ending level did it underwater just to make things interesting. FWIW and all that ;)

:D Yeah shes not limited to the water. None of the enemies in Duke3D are limited to any place. You can have them in outer-fricken space and it wont bother em' none. So whatever idea you had will probably be fine assuming it was some kind of an attack or something.

My mod is compatible with the original maps, and in fact has no maps of its own. Therefore, whatever changes I make to the Queen need to make sense underwater. Having her jump on the player (my first idea) would not make a lot of sense. What I ended up doing is giving her a forcefield that reflects missiles.

Have you even touched the map editor yet DeeperThought? At some point in time your bound to have to use it.
