View Full Version : The new Keen

I was reading around a Keen Forum and found something really cool! Here's an excerpt:

quote:
I got Chips & Bits Magazine in the mail today. ... They have a website at www.Chipsbits.com. (http://www.Chipsbits.com.) ... Anyone who got it in the mail, I strongly urge to read through it. You all should remember how Carmack was talking about toying with Keen on the Game Boy Color? It is no longer a toy! It is due for a release in September of this year. It is classified as Adventure and is on the the GB Color.

I checked it out on Chipsbits.com. It's true! The only problem is that I'm gonna have to shell out $100 for a CG. Oh well, I was planning on buying one anyway.

That is a game that all 16 of us CK obsessives will purchase.

apparently those 16 keen enthusiast are also mindless, since a keen game without Tom Hall is like star wars without George Lucas, or an Ultima without Lord British, etc.

yea, and come to think of it, the Ultima comparison can get me seriously flamed (anyone said U9:Ascension?)
let's rephrase that, Discworld without Terry Pratchett, U2 without The Edge, or Joe without Dopefish http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif

Here's the deal with this Keen Color Gameboy. I made a few phone calls this morning - called Tom Hall, Todd Hollenshead (CEO of id), and Scott Miller this morning.
All of them said that it's something that's been discussed, but nothing's been finalized. The Chips & Bits thing is highly presumptious - I wouldn't take that as any kind of official anything.
If it does happen, it most likely won't be anything more than a port of portions of Keen 4 & 5 - I got told that the unit can't technically recreate the current games as they are, will only be portions of the game - if it happens at all.

maybe he took a long weekend http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif
however i am happy about this, I'm very purist about the Keen franchise. it should be either a Tom Hall keen, or no Keen at all

Just out off curiousity Joe; do you think Id would ever sell the rights to Keen. If so, what would be a ballpark figure for the rights, granted you have an idea?

If I were Id i'd sell the rights to Ion Storm, for a large sum of money.

I think some people are missing the point..
It *is* a "Tom Hall" game, just not a NEW one..

it's not justv a question of money IONstorm belong to Eidos, while Id software works with Activision. giving the rights to Keen is letting IONstorm/Eidos sell and profit from the Keen series, which appears on the Id anthology, and also from future ones. let's say Hall make Keen7 and it sells good, that's a loss of money for Id. Id also wants to port Keen to consule games. there's also a matter of creative rights, Two of the creators of Keen still work at Id. there are a lot of other aspects to that, i don't know the personal relationship between Carmack and Hall and Romero. also, i'm not sure that if Id will decide to sell the rights for a large sum, IONstorm will pay, since the company is yet to make money from anything.

It ain't gonna happen. id will never sell Keen to any other company. Hasn't anyone noticed a pattern yet? id likes the tiny amount of profit that they make from Keen still. If they sold the rights to it, they probably would have to change the id Anthology to not have any Keen games in it. This was discussed a while ago... I guess new people don't know it, though...

Commander Keen would make an excellent 3D platformer, in the same vein as Mario64. Except it'd be more like a first person shooter, except in 3rd person. I can see it now, the return of the cool blaster, the Yorps, the Glaarrggs or whatever, it'd rule.

Wow. This is pretty interesting. I know nothing is set in stone, but it's just amazing that they would even toy with the idea. Hope for the best! http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif

Id wouldn't need to remove the Keen games, and besides, most ppl bought the Anthology for DOOM and Quake. what Id would lose is the right to release games like the Gameboy port of Keen4 etc.
quote:
I can see it now, the return of the cool blaster, the Yorps, the Glaarrggs

you don't see very well http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif the yorps and the gargs appeared only in Keen 1, one of the best things about the Keen series is that it featured different characters in every game, and Hall remarked that the Keen 7 would include new charcters and wouldn't have any of the creatures that appeared in the former Keens (yes, that means no Dopefish too)

Moonbuzz- Very true
Also, it doesn't fit in, why would Keen want to go back to Mars (where the Yorps/Gargs live).

I haven't been here in a long while...
A neural stunner as my icon too!
Okay, this thing seems set in stone to me. I saw somewhere where I could preorder it for $28.99
