View Full Version : A funny thing in the game....

... is that a reatively crappy cheap bar has a touch screen soundtrack player, as seen in the last section of the demo.
Also, that the "mother" alien seems to speak english.
But either way it an ausome game.
I like to thank realms for making the game in a way where u dont need to have the latest card to play it OK.
I gotta ati X300 256Mb a couple of months ago just to get by with, (hell, it only cost me 60). But the implications are visible with PRey, i cant get no more than 30fps and the average is about 15 at minimum and even at 10 when there is action, but im playing a medium, so id probably be better on low. But i got used to playing games at those speeds cause i aint getting a card till directx 10 ones come out. (Oblivion is a bitch BTW)
And to the staff, how long from game launch will u be able to come out with a dual core patch for my pentium D?
Cause i can wait a while if i can get a better experience.
And also, is there gonna be more levels where u explore human places like the bar? or is it mostly gonna be alien places? Cause i like a little variety.
I give this game a 8.5, simple cause it is kinda quake-esque.
When the humans get butchered, it reminds me of how stroggs are created in quake. Those mindless things even look kinda like strogg.
And also, im not into the whole confined spaces game style, i like a little openess.
But the game rocks with its innovative style of spirt fighting and portals.
And i love the fact that this guy actually has a personality, Unlike quake, halflife or doom ("talking would only hinder the personal experience" MY ASS)
Keep up the good work guys ;)

The mother doesn't speak in English, but it turns out that you have the ability to understand their language, and read their language, once grandpa makes available your spiritual powers. You're unique, in that other humans can't understand her or read her language, which is why she's interested in you.

Which is also why before your spiritual test you couldn't hear or understand her. Your screen would blur and Tommy would stat his head hurt. ;)

Actually, you start to pick up the language almost as soon as you are in the sphere. Remember the blurry moments (followed by a headache) from time to time? After you've been to the spirit realm, you start to understand what is being said (which is noticed immediately by the sphere/alien/???).

The hawk you mean? Yes, I find it a very cool feature. But he doesn't always translate stuff. For example: a (non-interactive) control screen next to where the huge balls are transported upwards. I was wondering what was going on, and hoped that Talon (the hawk) could give me a hand (or claw) ... but he didn't give me a clue there, unfortunately.

Talon, the hawk translates all of the alien language. You cannot understand what the mother is saying in the first two levels, it just hurts your head but when he arrives - bang! "Who said that?" He also translates most alien writing on computer panels.

telepathy is generally assumed to ignore language barriers

LOL - what was that old cartoon, "Stop that Pigeon (http://stopthatpigeon.ytmnd.com/)"? Prey needs a soundtrack like that.
edit - It's stated directly in the game that Talon would translate the alien tongue for you - not just the signs, but "mother" too. You first understand her (and she acknowledges this) immediately after Talon joins you.

You're unique, in that other humans can't understand her or read her language, which is why she's interested in you.
You can also argue that Telepathy reaches beyond language barriers as in anything that has a language would be able to understand. Also, you could also guess that the first few times She starts trying to talk to Tommy is more of just inspecting than trying to communicate anything, like probing his mind.
Zixinus
07-24-2006, 10:29 AM
Or that the telepathy is complete bullshit, and its just a plot device. :P
Mother`s telepathic bursts are understandable to you as soon as you get Talon. It is clear that it is Talon that translate it to you.
If telepathy ignores languge barriers, assuming as it gives stimulie and emotion directly, then we can assume that Mother was giving her "languge" stimulie generally to her minions, probebly giving indications and orders trough concepts that Tommy does not understnad, thus to him these indications and concepts are just glibberish that makes his head hurt.
Talon clearly acts as a translating proxy.

She doesn't have to learn the language if she spoke it before she became what she is now (well, not anymore after Tommy finished her ;) ).

Becuse you are not talking with telepathy. You are giving stimulie (pictures, sounds, smells, etc.) trough telepathy, as well as emotions. The idea is that, concepts can be also given trough telepathy, if the subject has enough "mind-power".
When mother gives telepathic orders, she gives them in the Alien's languge or stimulie system. Tommy does not understand what she is "saying", until Tommy gets Talon. Talon then acts as a proxy for the alien "languge", allowing Tommy to read alien scripts and orders, understand speach and telepatic massages. Tommy comprehends the translation what Talon gives as English.
Also, people do not think in languges.
They think with emotional and stimulie patterns, that shape into thought, that they can express with languge. It jsut seems that way in fiction, becuse that is the only way you can translate thoughts and ideas. Well, not the only way, as you can use surreal elements, absract illustration and so on, but expressing ideas and stuff in languge is more convient and simple.
And I highly doubt that Mother speaks spanish, as when Mother was abducted, the spanish most likely were still nomadic barberians.
