Just curious... looking to optimize my visual experience. :)

Most likely same as in Doom 3...

Bring up the console and type com_showfps 1

Or you could just download fraps at www.fraps.com. Pretty good program IMO.

That's probably the worst solution ever.

Yes, you bring down the console which by default is Ctrl + Alt + Tilde (`/~) and type in com_showfps 1

If you want to make the console easier for yourself you can try typing com_allowconsole 1 in console which will make it so just Tilde is the console bring-down.

why is that a bad solution ? Fraps is very precise when it comes to fps counting .. and ontop of that you get the great feature to make movies directly ingame .. nothing wrong with that

because there is a "precise" in-game framrate read, and it's actually part of the game.

Instead of downloading external programs, he can just use what is given to him.

Also, when PREY comes out and you do want to make vids, i suggest you take the rout of recording demos and filming off those

Thanks for the solutions, all. Went with the console method...was too lazy to go the d/l route. :)

theres also a way to go into the preyconfig.cfg (in the prey demo/base subfolder) and change sta com_showfps "0" to 1 (which is a more permanent solution, but not irreversable.

@Solaris that doesnt make fraps a bad programm does it ?

and for the demo there is no possibility for that and even though i would still use fraps couse it is easier to handle. I am not a "proffesionel" film maker i dont need to cut every single frame together. Which is what you would have to do without fraps.

it's not a good solution for regular use because when you reload a level after dying, you take a major fps hit for 20 or 30 sec; also , this:
"bind "INS" "toggle com_showFPS", is a convenient way turn it "on" and "off", add it to your "preyconfig". This binds the "Insert" key to the command

in Fear and Doom 3 you do, so I stopped using it...I'm actually talking SP here, not used it in MP

weird .. i never experienced that.

Neither have I. On my machine, FRAPS has never resulted in a reduced frame rate in Doom 3, ROE, Quake IV or the Prey demo while using the frame rate counter in single player, multiplayer, or otherwise.

With fraps, odds are your ability to run it with the game is determined by your processor and available ram. Someone on a lower-end or mid-range computer might end up taking a big hit because they don't have 1gb+ of RAM and don't have a great processor to allow the 2 programs to run at once.
