View Full Version : Another nitpick

Probably already mentioned but just in case -

When you are abducted you see a mirror with yourself jen and your grandfather. When tommy struggles and faces jen your camera is still free to look wherever you want....which kind of looks very silly like an out of body experience.

In the bathroom it moved the view for you as tommy moved, I would think doing so there would look much better. As it is right now tommy can look right and you can turn to the left at the same time. :o

you have a point, but i dont care :D

Of course not, its hardly game-breaking.....I didn't even notice it at all the first time through. However upon my second play through it became very apparent and seemed really odd. It seems to me like something easily fixed by taking control away from the player like at the intro.

The other out-of-body experience I noticed was when you were in the bathroom in front of the mirror and you were playing around with the faucet fixtures, the refection shows that your hands didn't even move, but you see your hand move out in front to turn on/off the facuets.

Yea, its minor than the other one you noticed, but something that I noticed is all. I thought that since they were all refections of the model (and their associated animiations), it would also reflect their animations as well. Or maybe that isn't the case with the Doom3 engine.

Hopefully DNF (which they say are all skeleton animated) won't have that limitation. :)

If they didn't let you move the camera in that scene, you would be here bitching about that.

Minor nit:

There a scene inside the mothership where you activate a control panel and all the external windows open up, giving you a real "WOW!" moment. :)

I wish the background sky texture had been scrolling VERY slowly. Like, just slow enough that you don't notice it at first, unless you wait a bit and look for it. I think it would have added more depth to the scene.

why is everyone so picky, just enjoy the game already

I AM enjoying it. I've been waiting for this game since 1997, looking at screenshots and videos and now I finally get to play it. It's awesome. :)

My only nitpick is that my computer sucks.

I don't know were to put this.. so I choose this thread.. instead of creating another "prey-demo-opinion-thread"

i'll do it the "pros and cons" way :p

pro:

-imaginative weapon with a touch of standard(not 100% pro:p) i.e. green acid shooting thing is somekind of shotgun(+long range more precise) :p
-optimization is great.. it runs fast
-good graphics especially due to good optimization since I can put higher graphic without lowering frame rate too much
-a story(more on that later:p)
-good balance of humour and everything..good desing, and not that much crates put everywhere..
-fun use of gravity

cons:

-weapons feel week(not enough physic impact on characters.. and not enough damage overall).. why would advanced technology be weaker than actual human tech?..because we would die too much right... well this is the cheap way around.. I would have hoped better..

-looks a bit like doom3.. but not that much..just a bit :p

-the story..well, it could have been more immersive..i know it,s just a demo, but for the story there should be more focus on "details" like girlfriend grandpa and tommy being kidnapped or something, also, on grandpa's death(spoiler).. and finally on tommy's own death(double spoiler..do not read those parts).. and there, no need for cinematics..i,ve played games that used still images, and narrator speach(not appropriate for prey though..but still) that was so full of emotion..i think an High tech game like prey could manage better..

-some places in the game doesn't mean much anything.. like a room and corridors where there is some kind of worm thing vomiting bodies..why?.. is it to drown passerby in vomit just for fun?..maybe aliens think it's fun to walk in vomit.. so anyway..several rooms aren't significative enough..

-almost the same as above but about gravity switch.. it's fun..great.. but they don,t seem to be used with logic..meaning , in "real life" those aliens wouldn't build thos gravity flipping thing and wall walk if it wouldn't be to make them usefull to something..

that's about it..

I don't know what you are talking about, don't make assumptions.

Thats why I called the thread 'nitpick' because its a minor issue. Sheesh I already said I loved the game in dozens of other threads, this forum is for positive *and* negatives you know. The point of posting this was for Human Head's benefit.

I have a minor nitpick, that may become full blown aggravation as time goes on:

if the player selects a server that is full, please send the player back to the server browser, not the main menu. This happened a few times trying to get into a 7/8 server that filled up as I tried to connect. Obviously they are looking for a server, why send them back to the main menu?

Yes, that is annoying.

..thats the most retarded thing i've heard....atleast this game HAS mirriors, GOD!, the samn thing happened in Doom 3...and im glad it used the Doom 3 engine...no other engine looks like it, and I love it...and anyway, it can be fixed in a patch.

A nitpick indeed...are you going to complain that you can pick up bottles, when in HL2 you don't even see a hand pick them up?

It wasn't a complaint, it was an observation. Sheesh.

I have a nitpick too. Is there any way to get rid of those reminder messages like "C to Crouch" or "L for lighter?" First off I've changed the keys so they dont even apply but they look really consolish and take me out of the game when I see them. As far as I can tell the one that shows you how to zoom in and out never goes away no matter how many times you've done it.

Dude... this is a NITPICK thread! We are just nitpicking, and not seriously hating or saying it HAS to be fixed... just like when someone points out continuity issues in movies. they are minor, but enough to have some observent people notice.

And besides, some ppl are bothered by little things, most arent. Let the "some" be heard, too, ya know.

When you say nitpick I think of small things...I don't think of things THAT small....as small as not showing an animation in a mirror.

Anyway, continue the thread :)

Zizz

The reason why you dont see all animations in the mirror is cause of they work with different models. the mirror is acculay reflecting in real time, dont doubt that, but they didnt make the player model animations for all this little interactions in only the beginning cause there happens to be a mirror...

theres player model and first person interaction model (hands/arm for basicly the weapon / buttong interaction animations.)

Dont call it lazy, its just obivous they dont waste time on that.

I liked being able to look around during that mirror/abduction scene. If you were forced to look where Tommy looked, it would have lost some immersion because it would have felt like a script (would have indeed been a script). That made me feel like I was trapped, which made me slightly more involved in the scene.

I rather think they should have animated tommy to look where you were looking.

I rather think they should have animated tommy to look where you were looking.

That happens most of the time, but there's times when it's impractical.

Plus it is a GAME. If you made these things 100% totally accurate with real world physics, it would be no fun.

It has nothing to do with physics. We aren't asking to loose our leg in the game so we have to crawl further. I did not notice the thread starter's nitpick, but now I read it, I agree with him. You say "it would be no fun". But I think the game would be more immersive if it was done like in the bathroom.

Why take the time to make reflection animations when theres hardly any reflections in the game? It just doesnt seem logical.

Zegraphoob

Weren't that portals?

CodyLamp

Did you see any portal in the game that was close enough to a Condom Machine or Sink?

I thought you were asking if the portals were reflective and yes they are but where in the game were there ever portals close to anything interactive? But I'll be honest I'm sort of talking out of my ass because I havent completed the game, but I dont see the logic in creating a bunch of useless animations used only when you see yourself in a reflection and I appologize for the confusion.

Also I edited your Quote because Im a complete jackass and it sounded odd to me. :D

Ah, I thought you were talking about the part on the conveyor, which is what this thread is about really. In that part you can see yourself in the mirror moving your head, but your screen doesn't move along. I thought that's what you meant with the reflections. so I said: "Aren't that portals"? With the "that" referring to the mirror.
