First off I hated Doom 3. I know that I do not rank in the majority here, but at the time I actually got to play Doom 3 on a high end PC, was durning the same time I got to play HL2 on a high end PC. For me, HL2 raped Doom 3 in every way possible and probably narrowed me view on Doom 3.

As for the doom 3 engine, I didn’t mind Quake 4. I thought it was fun for the PC, but again the engine didn’t wow me or anything. It was like an updated Doom 3 to me.

So to say the least, I wasn’t very excited for the most part about Preys release. In fact, probably no one remembers my out burst during the “Prey” hype when people thought it might be DNF and I knew for some reason it wasn’t, I was angry. A ban later, and a lift and some conversation with a few developers I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

So I opened my mind a little to another Doom 3 engine based game. It already had two things going for me. One, it’s being published by my favorite PC developer. And Two, the developers themselves made one of my all time favorite games, Rune. I loved Rune. I mean I LOVED Rune. I cannot tell you the amount of hours I invested in Rune’s multiplayer, but I assure you it was a lot.

But still.. Doom 3 and me… Still wasn’t exactly excited. So when the Demo came out I was originally going to wait for the 360 version. I’m now used to controller FPS, and I wanted to watch it on my nice HDTV. But my patience is that of a 5 year old, so I downloaded it for PC instead.

For the review of the game, I’ll tell you that my system isn’t the greatest anymore. 6800GT OC’ed, water cooled 3.2 p4, oc’ed to 3.8, 1 gig PDP patriot ram, with double data rate technology. I built this system a month or two before the release of HL2 and it’s about update time, but happily I was abile to run the game with a relatively great frame rate with the settings at 1280X1024, 4x AA, 8 anastrophe, and everything else set at max.

Even on my aging system, which hasn’t even been reset in over a week now… The game ran smoothly for the most part. Ocasially the frame rate durning the single player would drop here and there, especially in areas which a lot of environmental movement. But I’d say the average was between 30-40, with smaller areas in the 60’s. Yes, I know many of you have 60 or better.. DIE. Just kidding. But even at 30-40 FPS, it seemed smooth enough not to be distracting.

The environments are amazing. It was like watching Quake 4, on steroids, beating its wife in some sort of roid rage frenzy.

I think unlike a lot of people, I was looking for things to bash more than to enjoy. Because of that I found myself noticing the craftsmanship that went into some of the finer details of the ship. Although the man human character models are the least impressive to me (still quake 4 ish, and not natural looking), the animations seem GREATLY impoved and even realistic to me now. Something doom 3 and Quake 4 lacked in my opinion.

But the real model stories reside in the enemies themselves. They look great. Even on my Pile of crap monitor (Ironically my nice high end LCD just died), so I got some crappy CRT. It looked great though.

I thought the voice work of Tommy in the videos I’ve seen sucked. But in the context of the game, it’s actually great. I like the cussing, because it feels more passionate and realistic to me. And really, all the voice work was pretty darn good. I’d even say HL2 level, which is something I don’t hand out often. I see why so many reviewing sites liked this game from the start at E3.

The sound track was fantastic. Although going in spirit walk, and hearing that chant over and over again is going to end up making me want to commit a violent act against an animal of some sort, it does fit. The song selection in the bar was cute, funny, and fitting. And I love how the music dictacted a serious tone in the emotional series parts. Just the opening in the bathroom, where he is talking to himself. The sound was great.

Most of all, I say it seems obvous that the reason 3D realms liked this game is because there is a lot of stylistic cues from 3D Realms games from over the years. I do not know how much of that they put into it themselves, or how much of it was Human heads own, but I’m merely talking about the funny one liners. Interaction with stuff in the bar. Posters on the wall, phone calls, etc. That’s the kind of stuff were all expecting when DNF is released, and human head game me the same feeling.

All and all, I loved the demo. And if you actually read all this crap, you probably love the game to. I will buy the game. And feel bad for all the trouble I caused during it’s hyping. It was worth selling on Duke Nukem’s name, because it feels right at home and apart of the family.

Now all I want is a new Rune game!!!

Great post. I wasn't too excited as I was back in 1997. But once the prey demo was released I got excited about the game as I did 9 years ago.

The game is great. Love it... and I've only played the demo.

Nice post guy, very in depth :) Prey seems to be working its way into even the harshest of critics and thats a hard thing to do. I wasn't sure what to expect after quake's demo made me doubt the use of the Doom 3 engine, but Prey has shown it can really be used for some amazing stuff.

I also had little to no interest in this game, and I also hated Doom3
for its boring gameplay.
(and for the fact that there was no music during play!:mryuck:)

Quake4 was better, it made more fun, but for me the Graphics looked
even duller than Doom3's.

But I think that Prey really beats both of them in graphics and gamplay.

So I totally agree with you, this one is simply the best of all
D3-engine games...!!

The Bar is really cool, it shows the influence of 3DR, just like you said.
Hopefully DNF gets a lot of this!!

Love this Game, too:love:
