View Full Version : ROTT gets new life thru Duke 3D

Hey, a while ago I played thru the first level of Shareware ROTT in map mode, and copied it onto graph paper, and reproduced it in Duked (Except the entry area, which is smaller, but the rest of the area is exactly the same as it is in ROTT) I used advanced effects to remake the elevator EGADS and wanderwalls, all in all through creative texture usage, it looks ALOT like it's ROTT counterpart. It even has the same music. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
So go download this level and play it in Duke for some good old ROTT nostalgia. :-) And see if you can find all the secrets. :-) Oh, and feedback would be nice.

Depending on how Apogee takes this, it could be considered to be an infringment of copyright, and you are liable.

But none of it is actually copied. It's all my interperetation of that level. If I had directly used their textures or a level converter, it would be illegal. But it uses Duke3d textures, nothing directly from ROTT, so it's legal.
Stop worrying about that and go download the level and have some fun.

I played it, it is your best level yet (well to be honest its the only level of yours that I have ever liked).

Okay, you didn't like Bobsp1 and bobsp2, meaning you are either Mortuus or Reg-User.
Anyways yeah it's a very faithful recreation of that level, and the music is the same which adds to the illusion.

I don't like your other maps, and I'm not either of them. Theseus is Gabba. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Wow, that makes three people I know of who dislike my maps! I'm shocked! If any more turn up I just may have to post all the fanmail I got when I released the maps.

You have great skills in build, but your maps are small and bland. I like the construction and effects in your maps, but I don't like the actual maps themselves.

Bobsp2 was cool though.

I don't believe it ! Who the hell do you think you are ??
I also find Bobsp1/2 VERY bad. There is no gameplay, so why the hell would they be good Duke maps ??
I don't know any french dukers who like Bobsp1/2 !!
Sorry about that. You should be more humble.

Okay, call me a daft twat if you like, but I prefer to play ROTT levels by starting ROTT myself.
In other words, what is the motivation for making a ROTT map for DN3D? If I want nostalgia, I'll just fire up ROTT as it's one of the two games that's always on my harddisk.

That is his problem. Sure he has real great skills in build, and lots of architectual talant, but his levels are so mind numbingly boreing. He should play through Duke again to see what makes build levels play better. If he took some hints from that he would become unbeatable.

"I don't know any french dukers who like Bobsp1/2 !!"
Pascal Rouad, maker of Roch 1, 2, and 3, loves my maps. He's French.
Also, to the guy who said whats the point of playing a ROTT level in Duke, well it's WAY higher resolution, better lighting effects, more levelmaking possiblities, all in all that question of yours was a stupid one.

Ah, I see. Well FYI, good graphics make a good map. Nobody wants to run around shooting things in a world that looks like shit.
I can't help that they're small, there's a sector limit you know. Everyone complains so much, well Bobsp3 will be much bigger since it's outdoors, and guess what my playtesters say? "Why isn't it as detailed as your other maps!?". See? *SIGH*, I can't win. I make great maps, people still find things to complain about.

I can see the playstation genration of graphics meaning everything is taking over.
Once actually playing the game meant something, not just watching it.

Stupid? Perhaps. But nowhere near as stupid as rebuilding a level from game A for game B, whilst game B lacks things that are in game A.
No lightning guards.
No heat seeking missiles.
No dual pistols.
No bazooka.
No wanderwalls.
No flamewalls.
'nuff said.

The falling off the edge of the world doesn't work well. You just die a bit. There is a much, much better way he could have done it.
From what I can tell, none of the secrets were implemented either.
I didn't like Bobsp1, it was bland, boring, and alot of it didn't work properly.

Theseus, All the secrets were implemented. Every single one. Go check again. The secret areas are all there and count toward the "secrets" score at the end of the stage.
As for you, "Tip", it didn't work becaus you played it using version 1.3d, you insufferable dolt. It is ONLY for version 1.4 and 1.5.

How do I access the map? I downloaded the rott.map file, but I have no idea on how I can run the level. I tried typing dnscotty109 but that didn't work either. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif
Boberaville, could you please tell this newbie how he could access this level?

You dont know how to run a map!? Woah... dude... Just run the setup.exe and select "Load a user map", then pick the map.

When I load this map, Duke crashes. Same with all your other maps.

Because you either are using version 1.3d, or have too little RAM.

That's not true - we don't want our level geography used, either.
