View Full Version : Can't run Shadow Warrior properly

I've got a Pentium 3 - 450 with 128 Mb RAM and I recently upgraded my display card to a Voodoo 3 (now Unreal runs beautifully on my system). Now whenever I play SW and try to go underwater, the whole thing blows up (there's this 'granular limit' thing). I've tried everything I can think of -- change the desktop size and color settings, make SW.EXE prevent MS-DOS mode programs from detecting Windows, uninstall and reinstall, use different sound settings, and so on and so on. No use. (To be sure, when I restart my system in DOS mode and run the game, then going underwater is fine -- except there's no CD music.)
What can I do? Help, please, anyone? Thanx. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif (I've got a CD-writer installed, BTW, with the required software and the rest of it, and I wouldn't know if it might have something to do with it...)

That's the old sound issue with SB Live. For now, play in DOS. Ken Silverman is working a patch for SW. He already relaesed the patch for Duke3d v 1.3 & 1.5. (What a guy)
As for the CD in DOS. You have to identify your CD in config.sys & autoexec.bat.
This is my config.sys
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\GSCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001 /PIO
This is my autoexec.bat
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I'll try this out, thanx!
Sure hope that patch for SW won't be another empty promise like the Wanton destruction add-on.

it's a sound card problem, the only way to solve it is via the promised patch. AFAIK Ken Silverman (may his name be remembered forever in our hearts) is making one. it's nothing to do with the addon promise. that was canceled because the game bombed. Heretic II fans have the same problem, as every Heretic/Hexen game had an add-on/expansion pack/ Mission pack, except Heretic II. I only hope there would be a similar patch for Blood as well, as it suffers from the same problem.

What parts in Blood have the echo effect? I may be able to do a similar patch for Blood myself.

I can also do one for Redneck Rampage http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Funny, I've got Blood too, but it's okay when I go underwater in this game. Same with Duke 3D. SW alone didn't behave. (Actually I bought One Unit Whole Blood; perhaps that might have something to do with it...
As for add-ons for the Serpent Rider games, did Heretic have an add-on??(I mean the original Heretic.)I thought there was just one Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders.
Didn't like Heretic II, BTW; the elf looks totally different, he acts like a nerd from some cheap Hanna-Barbera cartoon, there are none of the weapons from the original Heretic, same with the monsters, and I've never really been happy with 3rd-person views. Ah, well, guess my taste is just different...

Do you have a PCI soundcard, and if so, which one?
Considering the fact you have a CD writer, and Shadow Warrior has CD Audio music, and the crash doesn't occur with Duke Nukem 3D, it might not necessarily be the soundcard issue.
I experienced problems with the audio tracks on the CD when I had my old Sony DVDROM drive (any attempt at playing those tracks would freeze the system until the CD was removed), so it might be related to your new CD writer.

I think there was an add-on, the original release of Heretic was just a three episode game (ala Doom), then for the commercial version two more episodes were tacked on the end (You'll notice that they don't have the "maps" of the levels).

Reply to Delphi:
I tried completely uninstalling my CD writer, software and all, but it didn't seem to help...
BTW, I think DVD-roms are bad news. They seem highly unstable in behavior. I recently had the DVD-rom of my computer changed back to a CD-rom drive, and the technician told me a lot of other people he knew were unhappy with DVD-rom drives, too.
As for SW -- ah, well, I guess I'll wait for the patch...

Yup, the patch just came out. Tried it and Shadow Warrior now runs beautifully -- Lo Wang can go underwater anytime he likes! Thanx, everyone! In particular, thanx to Ken Silverman for the patch! http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif Actually, there's no more echo effect when underwater, but ah, well, guess one just shouldn't be too greedy... http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif

Hertic: Shadow of the serpent riders, is the original game, with the addon which is 2 extra episodes. didn't you ever wondered why do you kill D'Sparil in the 3rd episode, and not the 5th?
i though Corvus (the heretic protagonist) was really cool in II. and the 3rd person POV gave the game play moch more depth so you could really kick ass in melee combat, i still play melee-only deathmatch with heretic II.
as for your claim that none of the weapons stayed, the hellstaff, tome of power, morph ovum, the health vials stayed. the storm bow is a combination of the etheral bow with the hellstaff powered, the phoenix bow is a modified phoenix staff, and one of the powered up weapons imitate the powered up mace.

I would have preferred that Raven let Corvus keep at least some of his weapons just as they were in the original -- effects, appearance, name and all -- plus some new ones. And I also would have preferred that he had the same appearance as in the original Heretic -- you remember that picture of a hooded man (elf, I mean http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif) with a vest, shooting out a bolt from the crystal tip of his staff, with two skeletons in front of him? Also I would have preferred that some the old monsters were re-used, such as the winged imps, the golems, the undead warriors who throw axes, etc. That Raven did not do any of these -- and did not provide some satisfactory rationale for all these changes -- ruined Heretic 2 for me. For me, okay? http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif
Anyway, glad that SW runs nicely again. Time now for some wang! http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif
