Okay, so the Wanton Destruction add-on for Shadow Warrior wouldn't sell if it were made into a CD and put in the retail stores. Why not make it downloadable freeware on the Net, then? What do GT Interactive and WizardWorks stand to lose?

We tried to get this released as freeware, and we don't have the legal recourse to do it. I tried, but failed.

face it, this is not going to be released.
3dR has refused to release EROTT which they have the rights to, even though they discontinued the distribution of it. so there's little or no chance that the SW add-on will be released.

If you can't make it downloadable freeware might you be able to make it downloadable but still charge for it? Sort of like a Blue Mountain sort of thing?

Your welcome. http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif I don't want to lapse back into a newbie here, but what happend to Wanton Destruction? Did 3DR just see that ShadowWarrior didn't sell well so they said "**** it" about the add-on? It makes sense, I mean why beat a dead horse? Am I right?

not really, AFAIK the add-on was commisioned by GT interactive to a different team (like what happened with the Diablo or the Half-Life expansion packs) however, due to SW's failure to sell, they shelved the add-on. it happens all the time, when Heretic II was released, every one was sure it would get an expansion pack, like the games before it in the series. however, Activision canceled the expansion pack plans because SiN, which was supposed to be such a major hit that the expansion was pre-commisioned, flopped

So would I be right in saying that all of you who continually say that a game won't be cancelled are proven wrong by this? There are actually financial considerations involved in these games as well as creative ones? I know this wasn't a new game, but there must have been time and money put into it right? Wouldn't the flop that was SW also show that these guys can put out something you don't like? Why did people like D3D but not SW? What other games have they put out that you don't like? I know they didn't directly make them, but the console game that has been hyped so much seemed to really suck. It seems to me that most people I know bought it because they liked D3D and then shelved it once they tried it. So how does this infallible company screw up so much and what does this mean for DNF? Have they just been enjoying the nostalgia many people have for D3D and if so when will it run out?

quote:
There are actually financial considerations involved in these games as well as creative ones?

is there anything else but money involved? let me put it this way. the creative side is only needed to make sure ppl would enjoy the game and will buy it. if game companies could make sure ppl will buy games even if they aren't creative, they would not need the creative guys (just look at Tomb Raider)
these guys can put out something you don't like?
show me one company that didn't produce some flops? (have anyone tried playing Blizzard's pre-warcraft games?)
quote:
So how does this infallible company screw up so much and what does this mean for DNF?

this company is a:not ifallible (no-one is) and b: it means what it always meant. we all hope that it would be a great game. but no guarantees, never were. this one can be great, or not. whoever saying else is wishful thinking, nothing else.
