View Full Version : The "No Rocket backpack in Las Vegas" Problem
The Red Slaughter

In the old times of DN3d and Shadow Warrior, the guys run around with fifty rockets and that was all okay. They where boss killa weapons, ignoring the lesser, weaker weapons. In dn3d, the Devastator was a great boss killa gun too.
But, since Half-Life, no hero is going around with 50 rockets on his backpack. I mean, look at the rockets and you see what I mean.
The problem is: Rocket Launchers are boss killa guns!
Normaly, the max is five rockets or six, so no Rocket Backpack for you.
Now... How Duke you kill bosses? With the averager weapons like Shotguns and Assault Rifles/Gatlings and such?
So, tell me of what do you think of this problem.
It depends on the amount of enemies you will face and how strong they are. If they come in quantities like in Serious Sam, then you should keep the weapons arcade-y. If not, I don't see a problem with having only 5 rockets or so.

I always thought it was fun in DN3D when you'd find loads and loads of atomic healths and ammo for the rocket launcher or devestator, because you knew something big was coming.
And games like Half-Life were a lot more serious, so there weren't traditional boss encounters, and it wouldn't make sense to have either specific "boss killer" weapons, or large ammounts of ammo for them just lying around.

I think it's no big deal...
Doom 3 and Quake 4 both have a buttload amount of rockets for the rocket launchers...

Really? Well, I'havent played Doom 3 or Quake 4... Slow computer, if you want to know. Someday it will get faster.
But I prefer killing things with my Shotgun. I don't know why, I have some maniac obssession about Shotguns in games. I think that Shotguns rocks.
But, by the way, any of you ever wandered how those guys can go around with ALL those guns xD? Where they stick it?

They have interdimensional pockets. Just watch the movie "The Mask". Thats how they do it.
The Red Slaughter

Wow. Can I have one of those? What's the cost?
I can even imagine the propaganda on TV:
"Is your house all filled up with lots of junk all over the place? Then end your problem! Come with us and we'll give you the INTERDIMENSIONAL POCKETS!
At a fine price, you can use the Interdimensonal Pockets to stow EVERY junk you have in your house! Just put the things on your pockets and tcharam! They're not there! If you want to pick these things again, just think about 'em and pick 'em from you pocket! You can put money there! And you're a action hero, you can stick all your guns there too! And if you pay more ten dollars, you get, ENTIRELLY FREE, a interdimensal motel for you that want to take you girlfriend/whore/wife/lover/or something else to a place far away to do it!"
Note: Interdimensional Inc. Have no blame if you lose money in the Interdimensonal Pockets. Same thing if you find aliens in that dimension and they decide to invade Earth. That's YOUR problem, deal with it. Also, don't even begin to think in putting your car inside the interdimensional Pocket. Believe me, we tried this. You just don't want to see that happens when you pull the car out.

the rocket launcher is a ok wep, its just that we need a stronger weapon to take its place. the devastator is a good weapon but the bfg blows away the devastator i mean i saw myself shooting 4 devastator missles at a pigcop before killing it and im like wtf. if you had the bfg 9000 you wouldnt need any other weapon cause even the battle lord would of died from 1-2 shots.
i dont remember killing a boss with only the devastator, i remember using all the devastator ammo (99) to kill one battle lord.

Having 1-2 shot kills on a Battle Lord would be terrible. The best part of the game was seeing lots of freezer/devastator/RPG ammo and knowing that a boss was coming up and that you're going to have to use the lot of it to win.

That's wierd...
The Cycloid Emperor, can be killed with the Devastator, without you using all the ammo...
Does that mean he's not as tough as the Battlelord..?! :o

In D3D, it wasnt overkill to have 50 (or whatever it was) rocket carrying capacity. The levels had tons of monsters, which each took 1, 2 or 3 (ish) rockets to kill. Bosses and minibosses took like 20 (i forget exactly) rockets to kill. Everything was really well balanced so that you always had just enough ammo and tons of stuff to blow up, but it was never too easy or too hard.
Im just really really hoping they dont pull a Doom3, and trade 100's of monsters per level for 10s of monsters per level, due to the curse of fancy graphics.
Otto von Keisinger

Amen to that.

Nahh, Tim's description is maybe a little exagerated...
Yeah, there were many enemies, but there was hardly many who could withstand more than one rocket, other than the Assault commander (and the Protector Drone i hear, i haven't tried Atomic edition yet :o maybe more)
Minibosses (like the mini Battlelord's) needed 5 rockets, then they died...
Bosses (the real ones) took a whole loads of them though... never got to count that...
But most enemies couldn't handle even 1 rocket...
Still, if i remember correctly, each ammo pack for the rocket had 5 rockets in it, and that's fair imo, for the average usage of it...

Yup, that Sucker Drone could get a Rocket right on his face and survive... I mean, c'mon, he just look like one big ciclop-like alien xenomorph! How the hell he survives?
Tell you, the Protector Drone was a interesting enemy. He was faster than all foes, atacked fast and with force, hard to hit with the rocket launcher. All the times I find a Drone near a lot of foes, I tend to kill the Drone first. When you meet two of the bastards, better go Chaigunning on him or eat shit and DIE!

The only creature tougher then the battlelord is Duke Nukem. ;)
I hope there are a lot of rockets, because I just love shooting them to see the explosions. In D3D I sometimes used them to take out the pig cops. Because it looked helluva cool. ;) :D

I liked the explosions from the 2001 trailer...

Of course shotguns are great, i love them... But it's useless when you can fire 3 shots at 3 enemies, while 10 otehrs shoot at you...
Then why not just blow the whole bunch up with a single shot..?!
There ya have my point...

Well in most games everything takes an exagerated degree of damage to kill and games are supposed to be like action movies. You never run out of bullets and the bad guys can't aim.

True... In games, badguys tend to hit better than movie badguys though...

You're forgetting HL2's unlimited RPG cases.
Ah man unless Duke is gonna have cool ragdoll physics so you can see the pigcops getting gibbed or thrown around by your rocket fire it's not really worth it. 50 Rockets is soooooo 90's :)

FEAR had gibbing, and ragdolls... I loved it when i got to blow some guys several feets in the sky, while they lose a leg, or two, or the half of thier body, or whatever bodyparts else they lose... :o
30-35 Rockets is fine imo... Everything under that, would make most players think it's a "Special occation weapon", which i hate in games... I want to use it frequently, without always worrying about the ammo, constantly...

Quoted for Truth. Then you end up finding brand new rocket stashes while you had max ammo the whole time. You think: "Damn, why didn't I use it, it could have made my life a lot easier "
Weapons with small ammo capacities for them make the player subconsciously avoid using them (on Single Player at least). You always feel like you need to "save" them. Then the game ends and you missed a lot of opportunities to wreak havoc with your Rocket Launcher.
BTW, off-topic thought: What about doing it like Quake 4? Reloading and weapon upgrades for single player, "Doom" style ammo pool for Multiplayer. BECAUSE NOTHING IS WORSE THAN DEATHMATCH WITH RELOADING!!!
Really, DN3D Dukematch was awesome. If DNF has me reloading a 30-round Assault Rifle every time I frag one or two players, it just...Is not going to feel like Duke. Leave that to tactical shooters, 3DR ;)

reloading adds stuff to game play, frankly its fun to be caught reloading and your left saying SHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT you newb i was reloading or vice versa. it adds realism,
i dont play dn3d or dukematches today because why would i do that when i can play hl2 deathmatch pro or counterstike: source.

Why do games have to have so much realism. Personally if I want realism I play a game that imitates realism (like ghost recon or something like that).
For me, some reloading might be nice, but since Duke is a bit into the feature, a lot of reloading is not fun IMO. :)

FEAR
Speaking of FEAR, I hope DNF won't have the same system concerning weapons - I mean: 3 weapon slots available, but there are over 10 weapons in the game..
No, if I come across a new weapon, I want to pick it up without throwing something else away :P
You can't imagine how long I was doubting wether or not I should pick up a new weapon in FEAR, and which one I should sacrifice for it.. AVOID THAT SHIT

NOT, for Duke though...

They where even thinking of putting an inventory system back in, so I expect Duke to be able to carry all the weapons he finds (minus the stationary weapons that is. ;) )
