Playing Doom 3 I noted two things that would have made game play much better. First was the lack of flashlight on weapons. What a big pain it was to toggle between flashlight and gun! Thankfully, there are mods out there that fix this.
Second thing would be to give the player some flares. Since the bad guys in Doom 3 evaporate after fragged it's harder to telll where you have been. Some flares (or spray paint) would be great for this.

#1. Duke can see in the dark...naturally (or he can just use night-vision goggles like he did before so he wouldn't need a light)
#2. I LOVE FLARES :flame: . It would be neat if you could light them and hold them with your hand (at least until the fire got near your hand, then you'd throw it ;) ), but also have the option to throw it when you want. I loved flares in Tomb Raider 2 ( I haven't played the others, except for the demo of Legends, gotta buy that game.)
#3. I would actually like to see Duke use a ZIPPO Lighter when he didn't have light or night-vision goggles. However, the devs would need to model the lighter so it would show onscreen (just like weapons). I hate how Human Head gave Tommy a Zippo in Prey but you never actually see the Zippo and the fire :( .

I'm fairly sure DNF won't be quite as dark as Doom 3, and have the big needs of light...
Flares are nice, but i don't think it's anything Duke would cary around...
Doom 3 was designed like this on purpose btw...

If there were any dark areas they wouldn't be a problem.
A pipebomb here and RPG rocket there.
The explosive light show would solve all your illumination problems

The remaining fire would clear up the rest...
Assuming there are any "rests" after this...

the reason it has the whole hold the flash-light and a gun seperate is that it adds to the atmosphere. a guy walking around with a dinky flashlight while being hunted.
and the dark thing, it was pretty creepy, cause when you saw a monster and it runs it leaves shooting aimlessy in the dark hoping you hit something.
its part of the cardinal rule in horror, never show the monster a whole lot and suspend the audience and character in complete darkness until the suspence is high then the monsters attack.

You still have that effect with a light on your weapon. Only parts of the monster are illuminated.
