Right seems i found away around this "bug" or what every it is.
What i did was get a new hard drive (ide) and make a small partion on it then install the game on that. dada! the game now works :D ..ish it will load up let you set all your controls and so on then when you start playing, and you push esc to bring up the menu CRASH! :mryuck: and it won't work again till you format the partion again :/

this is a really sucky bug thats stoping me enjoying a really great game :(

well...since this is the thread that contains the specific offset error that I am experiencing in its subject, I will try to make this an official one.

I think I have been patient, but I haven't really seen any discussion of this specific issue...I've seen other offsets get talked about, but not this one so much.

Again, it is bizarre that people would have to go through so many "hacks" to get a game working when its demo worked fine. All that I can really think of is the addition of copy protection, although I don't think that is the issue as it manages to launch into the game (even if just to the splashscreen), and of course code to allow the usage of the retail pak files...is it perhaps an issue with those pak files? I recall Civ4 users had some issues in the early days of its release surrounding their pak files and that they needed to extract them in order to get the game to work.

Well, please, keep us updated on this issue...it would be nice to get a list of issues that are being worked on.

And there is no need to comment on spelling when your grammar is also missing a few points. Although I agree, while it is frustrating to buy something one cannot play, and how totally bizarre when everything else works including its demo, there is no need to get up in their face. As a sysadmin I know how stressful it must be when money is on the line and ones customers are losing their cool.

well.........after a week and a half of owning this game I've finally made it to the menu and past the splash screen.

I read about someone trying this so I thought I would give it a shot.

I used the subst command (subst /? for those curious how it works) and it loaded to the menu right away...not sure what issues I may continue to run into, but it's progress.

Since the problem seems to occur on some SATA configuration, have you tried to update your chipset driver and the SATA controller driver as well ? What is your chipset ? Nforce 3 ?

Which one didn't work for you? Resetting my documents or running the command:

subst q: "C:\program files\prey"

...and then running the prey executable now in your Q: drive?

I have been recieving the 00385a3a error message for some time now. After trying updating all hardware possible, i saw this subst command and tried it. Low and behold it worked. If you follow loggerific's instructions, you can get it to work. The 00385a3a error message seems to be a problem with the game code and your hard drive. If you are recieving this message then use the subst method it will surely work.

masterpoint, what doesn't work? Have you tried the things listed, specifically the subst method or changing my documents? Pounding your fists and yelling continually "I want patch" won't help anything. We would like to help you.

Anyone else still with this problem?

Hi guys,
I'm looking into the cause of this problem, and would appreciate the assistance of someone who is having the crash on their system. I need to know a couple of things.

First, I'd like you to go to your Prey folder in Explorer ("C:\Program Files\Prey" by default), and right-click the prey.exe file, then go to Properties. What are the dates for "Created", "Modified", and "Accessed"?

Second, what is the date that Windows is displaying for your system (the date that the clock on the Windows taskbar reports)?

I appreciate any help you guys can give, we are working hard to resolve all of the issues people are having.

Thanks,
Rich

This is the same issue noted here (address is different due to differences between demo and retail executables):
http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18759
It is indeed fixed in our patch. However, until the patch is released, you can also use the subst fix listed on page 2 of that thread.

Thanks,
Rich

Ah...that explains it...I had been to that thread quite a bit, but it seemed weird that it had a different offset...should have thought about the fact that they were two different executables...I just figured, if it worked on the demo, then that was a different issue that was taken care of. Ah well....

Thanks for the update...

Prey is a BAD Game!!!

How do you know that? You haven't even played the game yet ;)

As for your problem, I'm not too sure :(

laggerific

you have to make sure that the drive letter you are using is not in use on your machine. I guess B: should work, but I would try for some letter later on. Are you on Windows XP? I'm pretty sure the subst command is on earlier versions, but that might be an issue.

I would try like this: "subst t: c:\games\prey"

If I'm reading you correct, you either typed in that line as you put it literally, and if so would not work, or you put in the 's' without a colon after it.

I PLAY PREY!!!!

1) Install to c:\games\prey.
2) Going to DOS and entering
subst b:\ c:\games\prey
3) Going back to windows and executing PREY.EXE through the B drive. If you do it through the C drive it will not work.

But... in my PC have two Hards discs...C: and B:....????

In finished game...I want my PC only drive C and now???

Please...HElllpppp!!!

This is being addressed in a patch...soon you will not need this hack. But it's a collaboration between the developers and the user...not a welcome one, but it'll help give them some time to deal with getting the best patch out as possible. Enjoy the game.
