Quake 4's Dark Matter Gun.

Postal 2's foot/kick open doors. Every game needs this, c'mon.
I remember thinking Perfect Dark's Laptop Gun's secondary function was pretty cool the first time I heard about it.
Then, in practice, it made camping really, really easy. :p Good thing they had limited ammo.
Also notable (and arguably cheaper) was the Farsight sniper rifle; it could look and shoot through walls, and had a tracking function. The ultimate camping weapon.
My additions:
Quake's Rocket launcher
Any weapon from Blood; they were all fun to use. :D
Rise of the Triad's Excalibat
Honorable mentions:
BLACK's M-249
Rise of the Triad's Drunk Missle
DOOM II's Super Shotgun
Postal 2's foot/kick open doors. Every game needs this, c'mon.
You could kick open doors in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, if I'm not mistaken.

I say BFG deserves to be #1 and not to forget duke's gun (the shrinker) ...hl2's gravity gun is cool (first of a kind) but the gravity gun in doom3 ROE was cooler since you could also catch imps and vulgars fireballs

Quake 4's Dark Matter Gun.
Now THAT gun was ****ing cool.
The Celebral Bore from Turok Series deserves way better points then No.10. I played it in Turok 2, and I liked it a lot. Quake 3's Railgun requires way better mastery then Quake 2's Rail Gun. Painkiller's Painkiller weapon weapon is also a very good weapon.
Halo's FRG rules. It kills people half with plasma, half with lag! :p

Redeemer - UT
I still love that weapon
Chronocepter! Or the Fusion Cannon I mean cmon in Turok it looked like the universe was about to come to an end when you fired them.
Turok 2- Razor (the sawblade he throws)
Quake 4- Gravity gun
Quake 4- Railgun
Red Faction- Rail Driver
Deus Ex - GEP
Painkiller- Painkiller
NOLF - M79 Granade Launcher (I love this gun because I am a terminater 2 nut, I used to call this gun the T2 gun)

The gravity gun can catch grenades and those plasma-ball thingys the Combine shoot.
I'm surprised the crowbar didn't make it, not because it's a super powerful weapon but simply because it's so iconic. I remember the first Half-Life 2 magazine promo. All it took was the image of a crowbar and the words "Coming soon..." to whip the gaming community into a frenzy of anticipation.
As for Mario Kart's red shells, shouldn't those be excluded because they're technically a power-up?

There are an infinite number of weapons more imaginative than the gravity gun, especially as the thing gets boring after the first 10 minutes once the novelty wears off. The fact that it was then subsequently copied and made considerably more useless just compounded things.
Heck, nearly anything from blood, comparatively for the time, is infinitely more imaginative than most modern FPS games and by far the voodoo doll should be well up there. Shrink ray is more fun, particularly the reaction of someone else in MP as they desperately try to get away ;)
The real top ten can only be derived from; Painkiller, Shadow Warrior, Worms, Duke3d, Postal2 and Blood.
With the exception of postal 2, I agree entirely with that list. Painkillers stake gun was some of the best fun I've ever had in an FPS.
Edit: Now I think of it, the real howler on the list is number 5 >_<. A sword with no imaginative effect at all is better than the likes of the voodoo doll in blood? WTF?

I never got tired of the gravity gun. :D
As for other weapons that should be on the list, what about Total Annihilation's nuclear missle? It could take out half a base in a single shot!
And in the criminally underrated Freedom Force series, there's the street lamp, the car, the mail box, the dumpster, the phone booth, a small tree, the air conditioning unit ripped off the top of a building, a chunk of rubble from a collapsed structure--pretty much anything your super heroes could pick up and swing like a club or toss through the air. This series has insane amounts of interactivity.

I don't see how The Red Turtle Shell could reach the second spot, and I don't care which came first, DN3D's Freezer should've been in there instead of that Ice Beam. Speaking of DN3D, no mention of the Shrinker? That gun from the Turok series made me think of the spheres from the Phantasm film series. Anyway, it's good that the Quake series' Railgun and HL2's Gravity Gun made it in.

Cool that they thought about Mario!
I miss Duke3D´s tripbombs on the list. They where both great fun, and an important innovation.
Its of course impossible to make a list everybody (or even somebody) would agree 100% with, but I think they made a good effort.
Except maybe:
*Waits for all the anti-Valve militia to come out of the wood work and whine about the Grav Gun being #1...*;) There is a difference between anti-Valve and anti-HL2. No I didnt agree with the grav gun beeing on the list at all. Its very good because its innovative, but I just dont find it fun to use.
EDIT: I´ve never played Perfect Dark, but that weapon looked REALLY cool! Wish more games could use similair things. It would be great for a game like NOLF for exampel.

Many of the weapons in blood wipe the floor with nearly everything on the list. The voodoo doll alone was classic for both its hillarity factor and for its fearsome effects.

No, because they don't really power you up and are used as a weapon.
Jedi Knight series- Lightsaber
Hitman series- Fiberwire, Briefcase sniper rifle
Age of Empires 2- Trebuchet
Duke Nukem 3d- Shrinker

Blood basically has cooler weapons in it's one game than most other games in other FPS's. Even it's grenade weapon (TNT) is badass beyone simple grenades in other weapons.
I've seen the list before a while back, but I can't remeber if the phantasm rip off from Blood 2 was in it. If it isn't it should be. Also the shotgun from F.E.A.R. Nothing but pure bliss when you blast a soldier in half from the waist in slo mo with that thing. God I love video games!
EDIT: big fat lazy reminded me about the lightsaber also, that's well fun to use (double lightsaber was great, the combos looked pretty).

You can find the original fairly easily from the likes of ebay and it's cheap too.
Avoid the sequel because some versions of it have starforce.

Postal Dude's piss - Postal 2
The Artifiact - Doom 3: RoE
The Stake gun - Painkiller
The Shotgun from Sin:E (ricocheting bullets off a wall is so damn fun)
Prey's rocket launcher (acts both as an offensive and defensive weapon)
Leech gun - Prey
Repeating Cannon - F.E.A.R.
Clawdovic - Serious Sam 2

07-16-2006, 11:38 AM
IMO the best weapon of any game is the double barrel shotgun from Doom 2.
Other weapons that'd be in my top 10 list would the pipe bombs from Duke 3D and NiN gun from Quake. And if they had to put a melee weapon on the list, the Dragon sword from Deus Ex was way cooler than Halo 2's plasma sword.
X-Vector

No I didnt agree with the grav gun beeing on the list at all. Its very good because its innovative, but I just dont find it fun to use.
This seems to be the angle of the list; weapons are chosen more for their originality and usefulness than for the satisfaction of using them (e.g. no shotguns).
That said, I would still put the gravity gun in there.
Of course a top ten list will always have omissions; for instance, I personally miss a number of the weapons from Duke3D, the snarks and the Gauss gun from Half-Life and the Stouker concussion rifle from Dark Forces.
The big one, however, is the lightsabre - not including it is inexcusable.

Since so many of us don't seem to agree with the list, let's compile our own :o
In no order:
Devastator from Duke3D
Voodoo Doll from Blood
Napalm Launcher from Postal 2
Redeemer from UT
Microwave Pulse Gun from SOF1
Gauss Gun from Half-Life
Super Shotgun from Doom2
BFG from Doom
Shrinker from Duke3D
Thunderbolt from Quake
Honourable mention:
Railgun from Quake 3
Dragon Tooth Sword from Deus Ex
Proximity TNT from Blood
Chainsaw from Doom
Kick from Duke3D
More additions:
The Hand of God, Rise of the Triad (Okay, so it's not technically a 'weapon', but it's still the best God Mode ever)
The Rig, Wild 9
Also of note is Wolfenstein 3-D's gatling gun for being the loudest damned gun ever.

The BFG is the best, especially when you know how the damage cone works. I feel like medusa with that gun. Simply looking at my opponent fries them, as long as they're in the damage cone, and the location of the blast doesn't mean anything except defining the cone. I can fire down one hallway and look down another one (facing the same way, of course), and get both covered with a single shot: one by the green ball, and the other by my laser eyes.
Add in the possibility of the silent BFG trick, and you have one badass weapon. Even without the tricks, it's one great gun.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the System Shock 2 worm weapons? Those are creepy.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the System Shock 2 worm weapons? Those are creepy.
They were pretty weak, though.
But what about the assult rifle from SS2? You could kill most hybrids in one shot with it if you have the ugrades and the research, and AP ammo, so you could mow down 12 hybrids in a couple seconds. It used lots of ammo, though.
Some other ones from SS2:
Crystal shard - Ammo is scarce so I usually use this.
Statis Gun/Cannon - Stops your enemies for a couple seconds; enought time to bash them to death.
Granade Launcher - Worked great against everything if you had the right granades. Doesn't take much modules to be able to use it. Plenty of types of ammo, too.
Energy Rifle - Could kill most mechanical targets in a couple shots and the ammo is free. Too bad it sucks against organic ones. Had a quick firing rate too, I think.
Turrent - You can hack the turrents in this game. (disable security before you give this a shot, and make sure you have a hack skill of 4 or 5)
And I haven't seen the nuke from SW mentioned anywhere...
How about the Mighty Foot? I hardly used this on enemies, but the quick kick button was good because you didn't have to switch weapons to break something.

hey cool it's the top 10 "press button and stuff dies" lamer weapons list.
I donno about that, I mean the freeze gun doesnt "kill" anything
It takes skills to use the railgun.
I will agree that guns like the laptop gun and Dooms BFG are quite lame weapons. (They fixed it in Quake 2 and 3)
I am also not a fan of the gravitygun, while its a good idea and all it's not the shit. I dont fear people who have it. In any quake if I see the lightening gun or the railgun being fired at me, thats when I start to freak. Or the raildriver in Red Faction.

Chronocepter! Or the Fusion Cannon I mean cmon in Turok it looked like the universe was about to come to an end when you fired them.
Turok 2- Razor (the sawblade he throws)
Yes!!!
I completely forgot about those . . .I managed to find a copy of Turok 2 for the pc a few years back . . .I'm probably gonna reinstall it now :D
Or the raildriver in Red Faction.
The first game's raildriver pWn3d. I didn't care much for the one in the second.
The flak cannon from UT will always have a spot in my heart, too.

For originality: Voodoo Doll from Blood
Pipebombs, Shrinker, Freeze Ray and Tripmines from DN3D
Cerebral Bore and the Energy Saw from Turok 2
Painkiller from Painkiller
Gravity Gun from Half Life 2
Those are off the top of my head (and also ideas from everyone before me here :D ). There's weapons that are more satisfying to use, but those at least are more original for me. :)
Edit: I just remembered the Snarks from Half Life 1, can't believe no one mentioned them!

Pitchfork and home made flamethrower from Blood
Shovel from Condemned
Cerebral Bore for the win!
Crossbow from XIII
Bouncers from Jazz Jackrabbit 1 and 2

The Chronocepter was just badass to shoot and just watch the awesome effect.
Soul Edge, from the series of the same name
The Master Sword, Zelda
Cannon, The Grid - Kinda like Serious Sam's SBC Cannon, but funnier.
Earthworm Jim's "whip"
(OK, so I'm just naming good weapons off the top of my head now.)
Xerxes
07-17-2006, 03:36 PM
Dragon's Tooth sword from Deus Ex :)
What about the assault shotgun?
The one that you put your arm through the magazine to hold the trigger(I think that was what you did; would a be pretty stupid thing to do if the magazine had to come out to be reloaded, but it was a shotgun and took four seconds to reload).
someguy2435
07-17-2006, 03:59 PM
Crossbow from XIII
The crossbow is such a satisfying weapon. I can't believe it's not in multiplayer.
Dragon's Tooth sword from Deus Ex :)
It wasn't really great until you completely upgraded your melee skill, and it could kill anything in 1-2 hits.
What about the assault shotgun?
It wasn't really great, for me at least. I only used it with sabot rounds against bots.
It wasn't really great until you completely upgraded your melee skill, and it could kill anything in 1-2 hits.
It could do that even without upgrading your melee skill - But yes, it could, and that's why it was so great :)
As for the Shotgun, it was a bit too inaccurate and slow to really be useful. I hardly use guns after I get the Dragon's Tooth sword.
someguy2435

I used the Assault Rifle a lot. The grenades on it were very useful. The shotguns aren't too great in Deus Ex: the pump one is faaaaar too slow and the automatic one is just ... bad.

The automatic looks cool, though.
If you upgrade your rifle skill(you should), the assault rifle is pretty accurate.
What about the flare darts for the crossbow? They were useless, but nice, since you could pick 'em up once you're done with 'em.

Then you have not played anything.
Not really. I've heard the "You're not a gamer/You haven't played anything" generalization applied to all sorts of games.
I haven't played Half-Life 2. Nor have I played Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Or Final Fantasy VII. Or (premium MMORPG).
But I'll be damned if any of those, or whatever else will be thrown at me, disqualifies me from being a "gamer." Whatever the hell that is, nowadays.
