I'm thinking of doing a weapons mod. Basically, everyone saw the E3 demo and saw the cool looking weapons and thought "I can't wait to see how that weapon fires". Then everyone got the game, tried the weapons out, and were dissapointed that they fired just like any other weapon from any other shooter. The only weapons I even enjoy using are the acid gun and the leech gun.
So here is my idea:
I want to make the weapons do what they LOOK like they would do. I want to completely remake each weapon, while creating a balance so that the mod isn't cheap. I think this would be a really popular mod, if done right.
What I want is feedback on whether I'm right about people wanting this, and ideas on what the weapons should actually do.
My take on the weapons so far:
Wrench- Same. Easily combined with portal wrench mod.
Machine gun- Laser fires until tube empties, then loads next tube. Like fires for .5 seconds, then reloads for .5 seconds. Never fired a weapon like this, so it should definately feel different..
Sniper Rifle- Deals the same damage, but over .2 seconds. Sniper fans would hate this, but there are much better games for sniper fans, right?
Grenade- Looks like poison, should be poison. Poison explosion, deals same damage for 5 seconds.
Stickybomb- Thought I'd make it different, so it causes a caughing fit. This would set up interesting ambushes. Deals half damage for 2 seconds, halting movement through coughing fit.
Leachgun- Absorbs energy from other leechguns. Just an idea, but it could make things more interesting. I actually had the most fun with the leachgun, I don't see a reason to alter it much.
Fire- Same.
Ice- Slow movement and fire rate. (Experiment for multiplayer)
Lightning- Same.
Sun- Same.
Chaingun- I hated it, it looks so odd, then it fires like a chaingun/grenade launcher. Well, the thing emits yellow energy, so I was thinking it fires rapid bolts of energy at close range. The attack has to fit the weapon animation.
Grenade launcher- I have no idea. Boss fires like 3 grenades in a row, so maybe that.
Acid Gun- Deals same damage over the course of 1 second. Causes the hud to turn yellow/acidish color based on damage. If possible, lethal shot to the front blinds for 1 second. I can't believe they made an acid gun that doesn't deal damage over time. I think the panic caused by the weapon would compensate for damage over time, I really don't think it needs to be made stronger.

Missile Launcher- Direct hit deals much more damage, but has decreased explosion radius. It's a living creature, it looks like it would bury itself into somebody then explode. I think this would make the rocket launcher more interesting, as there would be less floor shooting all the time. Anybody can shoot the floor, nailing someone directly takes skill. I wouldn't lower the radius so much that you can shoot someone point blank and get away with it though.
Cloud expeller- Too awesome to change.
This will be my first mod, but I know some C++, and the Decl files appear to be written in that. If someone could point me to some help files on scripting, that would be great.
