I have been videogaming for 30 years now. I've played a lot of games over the years. Prey is different. It is superb on every level.

I appreciate the portal tecnology, graphics, sound, controls, wall walking, Spiritwalk, storyline, etc. etc. but there is a moment in Prey which I won't give away that made me angry, sad, shocked, and completely overwhelmed with emotion. I have never felt such intense raw emotion from a videogame before.

I just wanted to say thank you for bringing us Prey. Best videogame I have ever played. Thank you.

Prey has the best story and delivery of any FPS, ever. It was exceptionally graphic and powerful.

"Grandfather, I'M READY NOW!" I totally got chills from that line.

Best story and delivery? Seriously? Wow, I wish I was you man, I just need more then "They got your girlfriend, go fetch" while you get some new weapons and "skills" on the way. I liked the spirit walking and deathwalking etc, but I think it could be made better, or rather, delivered better, it felt so rushed.

It's not just the "They got your girlfriend, go fetch" it's what happens on the way.. and the dialouge and stuff makes it better! I mean, wow, this character actually talks!

I notice a lot of people feel that way. So you must have played some action games with a far better plot and story execution. What are they? I ask in all seriousness, so many people thing the plot wasn't very good that I have to wonder what games are out there that have stories that are so much better.

I did. In Unreal 2:

During the whole game of Unreal 2 you really bond with the crew of the ship... there are great dialogues going on. Funny verbal fights between the main character and Aida. And shortly before the final level, when the player has it's greatest victory on the ground of a planet, he has to witness how the ship with his friends gets destroyed by the Skaarj. That one really had me crying, because I never saw a sad endling like that in a game before. Superb voice acting in that moment, when you hear the last transmission of your friends before the ship, that spent quite some time on between mission, breaks apart in the sky. It really got you angry and pumped for the final showdown. :(

It's even worse: after the showdown you get to hear a recorded transmission of the character's potential love interest Aida, while you drift through cold space in a rescue capsule... heartbreaking! :(

It is good to see fans really connecting with their game. There are any number of ways to do this, each person has their own way, whether it be playing through the whole game in one go, shutting out everything else, or playing at night, with the lights off, free from distraction.

It's only the "hardcore" gamers, i think that really do this. This is why games run into problems getting you emotionally involved, if you have breaks (5 minutes for every hour of prey i think is the official guide), play in a noisy, distracting environment, which many of us do, that emotional connection gets broken. This is why films with lots of commercial breaks don't give you that "wow" feeling.

This is also why the developers deserve credit, they have kept that connection going. Tommy keeps going on about Jen all the flippin time because he wants her, and because he does you do. I'm not going to guess all the tricks to up the emotion that are in this pretty shiny, albeit doom3 engine game, but i can bet there are loads.

My most memorable emotional moments, are:

* Killing jen after fighting her (fighting didn't bother me, just searching through about twenty levels for someone, just to kill them did)
* Meeting the keeper, the conversation bit was good, but the fight afterwards was rediculous
* Leading the aliens to the land of the ancients
* Realising i have become the sphere, then destroying it.

Now i think about it, i reckon a key tactic with the emotion is spacing out major events. You haven't found your girlfriend yet, but you're looking for her. The longer you look the more you want her, the more information and screens you see with her on, the more you want her, oops you just killed her.

This probably doesn't prove much beyond my inability to articulate anything!

WHOAAA spoiler-tastic there Chris. Methinks you need to try out the little spoiler button next time.

Good points though, I agree. But I couldn't believe the bit where you learn that Jen is actually a transvestite and Tommy goes nuts and starts wrecking the land of the ancients whilst Enesi does break-dancing in the corner. I was balling my eyes out at that bit!

You can still edit it in: Put {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text that you wanna hide. Of course you need to replace the { } with [ ]

Well, there arent that many FPS with a good story (Unfortunatly), But I think the Quake story is great (If you read through the lore and stuff, there is alot in there with Strogg battles etc) Half life 2 is truly great if you've played HL1 as well.

Though I don't expect alot of story in FPS, I expect it to last, to be longer since it dosnt have such a big story. Prey unfortunatly, is not long.

I am sure there are plenty of guys out there that can give good story games on other genres. I heard Fallout was great (Never got to play any of them :()

The longest journey is brilliant, the script there is just insanely good.(It's an adventure game, it got to be I suppose :P)

Anyway, in all fairness to Prey though, I loved the dialogs there, I like that the guy acually talks more in FPS then Gordon Freeman style(HL2)

I LOVED Art Bell, It was so cool to hear what was going on from other people's views.

Luga, you said something positive! Congrats my friend. I thought that you were a killjoy. I didn't realize that you had positive criticisms for Prey.
