First of all, I would like to let anyone reading this - there might be one whatsoever - know that any kind of feedback to this post would be greatly appreciated; the helping kind would be nice, though.
In the level "The Complex", after crossing a moving bridge where there are asteroids flying around inside the giant space station, and after using a flying vehicle to eliminate two spider-like creatures on a platform quite a way up, there is another platform with two charging units for the flying vehicle and two doors. It is opposite to the first platform. The only accessible door leads to a very small room with a portal and, except for three big pipes left and right from it, nothing else inside. On the other side of the portal there is what seems to be a fence consisting of four red glowing horizontal beams and in the middle of the ceiling there is a thick transparent "pipe" carrying white beams. Just before the fence this "pipe" is burst, light blue fog leaks out and descends to the floor of the room, forming a semi-transparent cloud in constant motion.
Every time I pass the portal mentioned above the video fades to a black screen, as if the next part of the map or the next level was about to be loaded, and then the game crashes into the Windows desktop. Every time. I tried to disable graphical effects - the game still crashed. Also changing the sound format from "OpenAL" to "Default" did not help. The game just crashes, no matter which options or effects are enabled or disabled. I do not know of a way to get past this part of the game. Quite a pity, as I liked what I saw of it so far and would like to see the rest of it, too, of course. Somehow the game appears to be finished without me having a chance to complete it.
I have the latest drivers for the graphics card and sound card installed already, so I do not think it is due to old drivers.
Just in case it is of any help, here is the system used:
nForce 2 400 Ultra motherboard
Athlon XP 3200+ processor
1,5 GB RAM
Radeon X800 XL (AGP) graphics card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro sound card
Prey as a dvd-rom retail version
About two years ago, when playing Doom 3, something comparable happened: Two creatures appeared - they "materialized" - and the game crashed into the Windows desktop. Every time. A patch - version 1.3, if I recollect correctly (this very crash was mentioned in the "readme" of the patch) - got rid of the problem back then. Since the engine used for Prey is based on the engine used for Doom 3 and the types of crashes seem to have some likeness, I thought this might be worth mentioning.
If anyone has read or heard of the problem or knows of a possible solution or a workaround - it might be possible to load the next (part of the) level manually via the console, I do not know -, please post it.
