View Full Version : Interactivity. What would you have liked in Prey

Since there are virtually no interactivity in Prey (besides in the bar/toliet in the beginning of the game), what would you liked to have in Prey or like to see in Prey 2.
I.e. I would like to be able to destroy stuff. Maybe have the good ol' exploding barrels. Now, it's your turn :)

No interactivity? What do you call the consoles in the game?

Come on man, you know what I mean. FEAR had some, Duke Nukem 3D had a lot, Half Life 2 had some and Oblivion had really a lot. I'm talking about interacting with the world, not just using a contact/console

once you get past the bar there was not much point of interactivity. If the second Prey takes place more in an environement with things you would expect to interact with i would hope that you can interact with it but other then that its no big deal i'm very glad they at least made one level where almost everything can be interacted with :D

Does it really matter? Just enjoy the game for what it has.

That's only because the game was designed that way.

Exactly. So stop whining about it.

True but i wouldnt see it as a great thing to have alot of interactivity because it would get rather distracting, and it just wouldn't work very well in my opinion.

It'd be nice to grab objects and move them around without pushing them.
The OP is talking about something other than pressing switches/buttons. here is no interactivity in Prey other than pressing buttons.

It's not distracting at all in HL2. How exactly would it be distracting?

But seriously, what kind of interactivity do you expect in an alien spaceship? They sure as hell don't have a bowling lane ala Redneck Rampage aboard.
Why don't YOU provide some ideas, when you are so keen on having more interactivity in games like this, instead of asking us? ;)

Half-Life 2 takes place on Earth! We all know what Earth is like (right?) so there is a certain expectation of intereactivity necessary to make the game believeable. What is a distraction is smashing crates over your allies faces and not even getting them to blink.

Exactly how "earthly" do think the gravity-gun in HL2 is? There's one on the shuttle in Prey. I would be nice to be able to use that, when you are not in the shuttle. Then you could fling stuff at the enemies, just like the Keepers do in the endgame.

yeh i understand what you mean. i loved the gravity gun in half life. especially towards the end when you can fling people around

But if there was a gravity gun in Prey, people would call it a rip-off.

I see what you're saying von OberWurst. But the Gravity Gun is Half-Life 2's focal point. Are you just saying that you would like Prey to copy other games?
Because Prey's forte were the gravity flipping, spirit walk, and the portals. If we're to believe your rhetoric, you would agree that Half-Life 2 - Episode 2 should have these features now, yes?

Well, there is a gravity gun on the shuttle (they just call it a tractor beam) and the Keepers seems to have one too (some of them anyway) and since you pick up ammo and weapons from the enemies you shoot, why not pick up a grav gun. HL2 is famous for it, but Doom3 expansion pack did also have one.
Rip offs are common in FPS. Today every FPS has a melee weapon, a basic gun, a shotgun (or shotgun like), a machinegun, a granadethrower and/or RPG and a superweapon. Doom started that trend and i hasn't changed much. Of course every modern FPS weapons are riboff from the Doomgame, but its not about the guns, it's how they are used.
Having said that, I would also like a shrinkray in Prey:D :D

You can still grab objects without the gravity gun in HL2. That would be a cool feature.

That was a design issue. It's the same deal in Prey, you are weapon-stripped when you are around NPCs, so you can't kill them.

yeh 2 shrink the monsters so you can step on them

I wish there were more boxes and crap lying around, just stuff that would fly all over the place when you threw a grenade etc. Not necessarily exploding boxes, but it would be nice to see the physics in the game get a little more of a workout (although things do tend to jump around in weird ways sometimes).
personally i would've liked it better if there were parts in the game without shooting where you had to interact with the world to get out of rooms...
you know, like experienting with wierd looking things to figure out wat does what...
i do agree that for a game that 3drealms were involved in there wasn't much interaction...i mean i've personally come to the point where i expect some form of 'insane' interactivity from any game 3drealms in involved in just because it seems to be there thing now :p

They advertise it, but none of the games they've produced have been very interactive. MP1 was no more interactive than any other game that came in that time period (look great though and played even better). MP2 just added the havoc engine, but didn't really use it at all. Prey has even less interactivity than those two games. The closest to can do to interacting with the environment is pushing around a 100 different varieties of boxes.
There was plenty of interactivity.

I would have liked the roadhouse interaction to have been present throughout the whole game, but in retrospect there wouldn't have been much reason to touch things in a spaceship....although they could have still attempted.
Omar - they don't really advertise it at all. Prey's selling point wasn't interaction and as far as I recall neither was Max Payne's. DNF is the one they are hyping to have interaction equivalent to that of a grown man's playground. Whether it comes through or not has yet to be seen.

Why not? They'd sucked the bar op there with bathrooms, video machines, and all. Why coudln't they have sucked up a bowling lane?

None of those games were designed by 3DRealms, that's why you don't see much interactivity in them.
Duke nukem 3d and Shadow warrior were the latest games designed by 3D realms and released IIRC.

Yeah, it would be possible. But would it make the game actually better? I think not...
Well, Prey being alot in the alien spaceship, one would think you could see more alien tech you could interact with, then again, I dont know what the engine can do, so.. Well, I can't really say much on it.
But I would hope there were more cool things you could do with all the monitors around in the ship, Like suddenly switch some lights off, or set off a trap, suddenly turn off gravity and such (In places you dont acually NEED it. just being there for fun)
It was alot of that in Duke Nukem as well, like, kicking toilet broken then drink the water :P
The "consoles" you are running into, are mostly just a bunch of fancy ways to press a button really that most often ,turns off lasers, or open a door.
Anyway, what would be cool(But not able in the graphic engine I bet) is to shoot one of the living walls, or thoose fleshy sausages that are around, and blood, guts and goo would just splosh out all over the place :P
