Hey, does anyone know is KMFDM's music still used for Prey? If I remember right, they we're signed to do the soundtrack for the original version...

I know there was a thread about it, but that discussion just turned into LamePrey thread; We never actually heard the truth about KMFDM's involvement (or if 3DR answered to it, I missed it).
SO; Official word from 3DR? Joe? George? Lee? Anyone? Please?
Personally, I'm kinda addicted to late 80s-to-mid-90s industrial, the era when it all was about experimenting and having fun with those soundscapes, making it catchy and innovative - time BEFORE it became mainstreamed and turned completely to metal (can anyone even remember non-metal industrial stuff, like early Front Line Assembly? That was ace - old-school, but ace!). http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I really do not know if we still have the right to use the music KMFDM recorded for us -- that's something I'll need to check into (I hope I can find that old agreement!). However, that music (and there wasn't a lot recorded) was "cosmic industrial" and not at all like the musical direction we're going with the new version of Prey. It'd be fun, though, to find a way to include that music in the game somewhere, maybe in a MP map, maybe in a secret area, that kind of thing.

That would be truly awesome, Scott.

Damm I'd love to have a game with a KMFDM soundtrack. It would probably have the same awsome impact on the game that Trent had on Quake.

Can you tell us what the musical direction will be? Or is that going to be a suprise?
Also, are we going to have continual music in a level or only when appropriate?

There used to be something on the KMFDM site awhile back where fans asked them about the music they recorded. Their site said something like "we can't use it, 3D Realms owns it".
Now I'm not claiming to say what the legality of the situation is, Scott's contract he talks about would have the proper details, just saying what I saw on their site.
Plus this is also something from several years ago, and I might not be remembering it properly.
I just went looking for the old quote, and I can't find it.

No, Mr. Joe is correct. I've been a rabid KMFDM fan for years and they keep claiming that 3DRealms owns the rights to the music.
I hope upon the release of Prey, if their music is included or not, there will be some way to get this music released. KMFDM did the music for the Spider-Man 2 video game, and they released it via download through their KMFDM store. I'm hoping this will be the case for the long-lost Prey music.

I remember someone's post saying that KMFDM's music for Prey would've been available in the jukebox at the beginning. Is it? If it is, where is it?

I vaguely remember something about KMFDM doing the original soundtrack for Prey back when it was first announced in the '90s and a quick Google search confirmed that. However, that soundtrack doesn't appear to have made it into the game and I don't see any information about whatever happened to it.
Any idea why the KMFDM soundtrack wasn't used, and what happened to the music that they created for the game?
Joe Siegler

We still have it. Why it wasn't used, I can't say (because I don't know).

You know, I've become a KMFDM fan after listening to Inane and Megalomaniac, when they were put online on www.prey.net!

Seems like I remember KMFDM releasing some of the music they did for the game themselves when it seemed like the game wasn't going to be released, but I can't find anything on that right now either.

I doubt it. If it was just releasable like that, it likely would have been done already.

Please, ask George and/or Scott! There's the chance they might reply: "Of course you can release it! It wasn't released because nobody ever asked!" ;)

We only have 4-5 tracks, and there weren't final (for the original game). Still, they were being considered for use in the jukebox, or elsewhere in Prey, as a nod to the original game. I believe it was a cost/licensing issue, as to why they weren't used.
Quason

So at this point, that handful of tracks is just in limbo, never to see the light of day? If so, I can understand the whole cost/licensing thing (something tells me Sascha K. would drive a hard bargin) but it's kind of a letdown all the same.
The music in Prey still rocks, though.

But... a couple of years ago you said YOU had the copyright for that music!
Now I'm confused.

That never happened. On an old variant of KMFDM's website, they had a FAQ question aout the Prey music being released, and Sascha (sp?) said something about they couldn't, as they didn't have the rights to it.
I did inquire about it during development, and was told it was some sort of licensing issue that prevented us from using it. I honestly don't know all the particulars.
NOTE: I merged a few of the KMFDM threads into one here.

Short story: We cannot use this music without paying a substantial amount of money. We tried to contact the artists to see if they would allow us to use for no charge (or a meaningful discount) but we were unsuccessful.

I'll ask Sascha in person the next KMFDM concert I go to (I've been to two of them so far, bloody amazing). But that could be a while... ;) The band is quite down to earth and spent hours talking to fans and stuff after their last concert in my city. There was even the first KMFDM wedding that night.
I've been wanting those KMFDM Prey tunes for a long while. But nothing yet. I'm patient.
And yeah, KMFDM's older website had the Prey release stuff in there. It was claimed that 3D Realms had the rights.
So yeah, been a KMFDM fan for over 12 years. Any other hardcore KMFDM fans here?

Sascha posts back:
i am unaware. the kmfdm@kmfdm.net email address i use has been in use since way before prey. if the new guys don't know this addy then...
fact is, prey would have to pay us 16,666,66 dollars in order to use the music.
money that 'd be nice to have and money we'd need in order to make the early stages of the soundtrack into the real thing.
fact is also, tim and i aren't working together anymore, he's busy with mm and i got my own shit to do,
go figure...
am i, singlehandedly, going to release half-baked music for a game that folde 7-8-9 years ago ?
i don't think so...

It looks like a tune from the Prey soundtrack by KMFDM actually surfaced in 2000!
http://www.mk-magazine.com/interviews/archives/000123.php
A couple more questions about MDFMK. The track 'Missing Time' from the Heavy Metal 2000 soundtrack - was that recorded specifically for the film or was it a leftover?
SK: It was for the movie and it was written at a time when KMFDM wasn't quite dead and the MDFMK idea hadn't really spawned yet, but by the time it came out we were MDFMK. Actually it was gonna be part of the video game soundtrack for The Prey (sic), but the finances for that project fell through and it never happened.
Read the lyrics if you don't know them: it DOES seem to be about an alien abduction!

Aye, that response sounded very anal and almost hateful in tone, like "Don't bother me with your pointless crap."
