Human Head Studios, Incorporated is proud to announce the availability of a dedicated multiplayer server for Prey running on the Linux platform. Instructions for setup are included in the package, which may be downloaded for free from any of the locations on our Prey downloads page (http://www.3drealms.com/prey/download.html).

There is a readme available online which you can check out before downloading. That file is available here (http://www.3drealms.com/prey/preylinuxreadme.txt).

The file is about 5.2Mb in size, and is a Linux archive (bz2). You will need some files from your original Prey registered CD (or DVD). Details as to what you will need are in the readme file.

Officially, these files are unsupported. They have been tested, and do work, but if you run into problems getting them to run, our official support channels cannot help you. Having said all that, we're aware that folks have been clamoring for the files, so go download today (http://www.3drealms.com/prey/download.html)! Thaks to Ryan over at Icculus (http://www.icculus.org/) for all the hard work on this.

One final note - the Windows based dedicated server files are still being worked on. They should be available shortly; we'll have more word on that when we have news to report.

lol give it a while man, nothing happens overnight. Like they stated earlier, the game was made for Singleplayer, not much support was ready for Mutliplayer.

Theres nothing they can do about it.. its the doom3 engine its how its setup.. All files or no files they dont set it up for server/client ie: some files only required by servers in one fileset and one set in another

IE: Servers do not need the textures and sounds which make up most of the filesize.

Doom3/Quake4/FEAR all those require you to upload all the files from the CD in order to host a server. Im going on 6hrs uploading with 9hrs left.. Its just ridiculous. Gamedevelopers need to keep that type of stuff in mind when developing an engine. Keep server only files in one file and client files in another makes it alot easier to package up server files that have everything you need in one package.

For example.. BF2 binaries are ~200mb while the game itself weighs in at over 2GB. Because the server binaries include all the code/content needed just for servers and nothin else.. You get the binaries and thats it.. no uploading of extra files from your cd.

Unless there is a linux port of your launcher...

actually.. just a config builder or something would be all i would need.. launching it isnt a problem just a config builder or command line builder

No it's not console based. People which use the console should know how to build a server.cfg on their own. My program is only for people which don't know :)

maybe an admin or mod would explain why my post according the upload of pk4s was deleted without a comment!

Probably because it was argumentative between you two and didn't matter.

quick question.. does prey use the same query protocol as doom3? Im assuming it would but i just wanted to make sure.

Also there is 0 documentation over and punkbuster about prey.. any idea on how to enable it .. i tried sv_punkbuster 1 in config but that doesnt work..
Edit: Figured this one out .. had to add +seta sv_punkbuster 1 to the command line

Also .. these settings:
deathwalkmap =
fs_game =
fs_game_base =

What are those? and what do they do

deathwalkmap I'm sure is for Singleplayer - eg: when player dies, what deathwalk map does the player go to (there's three).

What distros are supported by these binaries? Is this a general Linux Server at all, if not, then will SuSE be supported by this?

Almost forgot: thanks a lot to Mr. Gordon for porting the Linux dedicated server files so quicky, he even beat the Windows guys ;)

Now you guys know how Linux people feel when they have to wait for the binaries, hehe... I find this strangely ironic, being as and how there will be no actual client binaries available for this game in Linux.

EDIT: Portal Wrench Mod also available, will add more Mods as I use them :)

I can't wait to get this setup. I run several game servers for a clan and we are excited about adding this to our list.

I was reading the README and it's going to be funny when people start complaining about this command not working because they took it literally

cp /where/i/mounted/disc1/Setup/Data/Base/*.pk4 prey/base/
cp /where/i/mounted/disc2/Setup/Data/Base/*.pk4 prey/base/
cp /where/i/mounted/disc3/Setup/Data/Base/*.pk4 prey/base/
